4 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
Hip-hop and feminism combine in this empowering guide with attitude, from best-selling author Brittney Cooper and founding members of the Crunk Feminist Collective. Loud and rowdy girls, quiet and nerdy girls, girls who rock naturals, girls who wear weave, outspoken and opinionated girls, girls still finding their voice, queer girls, trans girls, and gender nonbinary young people who want to make the world better: Feminist AF uses the insights of feminism to address issues relevant to todays young womxn. What do you do when you feel like your natural hair is ugly, or when classmates keep touching it? How do you handle your self-confidence if your family or culture prizes fair-skinned womxn over darker-skinned ones? How do you balance your identities if youre an immigrant or the child of immigrants? How do you dress and present yourself in ways that feel good when society condemns anything outside of the norm? Covering colorism and politics, romance and pleasure, code switching, and sexual violence, Feminist AF is the empowering guide to living your feminism out loud.

This book was SO good! A trio of Black female authors who have dedicated their careers to feminist education share their experiences while discussing everything from music to consent to intersectionality in everyday context. They provide practical life advice on how to be a better feminist and how to discuss that to people who still think feminism is a dirty word. It's written for a young audience, but I actually thought that made it so fun.

Suet624 sounds like an important book for teenagers to read. 1y
Rachel.Rencher @Suet624 Definitely! If I had a kid, I'd get this for their library. 1y

TW: Assault

I am one of those women who was raised to be "sugar and spice and everything nice". Men have taken advantage of that and hurt me because I was too nice to stand up for myself and they knew that. I've worried about taking up too much space, not being pretty enough, and yielding to men so I don't seem "out of line". Fuck that. Fuck all of that. I'm learning how to become a better feminist and that starts with shedding my niceties.

5feet.of.fury I am all for sticking up for yourself, knowing your boundaries & not being a doormat. But I will say, if someone hurt you, it‘s not your fault because you were “too nice” or too trusting. ❤️ 1y
5feet.of.fury It‘s their fault. I‘m reading Circe right now and she just kept turning the men who showed up into pigs tho and I get it 🐷 1y
Rachel.Rencher @5feet.of.fury Thank you for that. ❤ I still need to read Circe!! That sounds like an incredible power to have lol 1y

TheBookHippie @5feet.of.fury 💯 also CIRCE 🐷🐖🐽one of my favorite reads!!!! 1y
TheBookHippie @Rachel.Rencher It is NEVER the fault of self in that situation -never. It‘s them every single time. There isn't a single person on this planet who is entitled to treat you badly-ever-
remember that. ♥️

Rachel.Rencher @TheBookHippie Thank you, Christine ❤️❤️ I'm still trying to learn to internalize that! 1y
TheBookHippie @Rachel.Rencher I‘m a survivor -but I‘ve had 32 years to process and heal. ♥️ Be gentle to yourself. It‘s a kind of grief -comes in waves, you get better at managing. 1y

I finished all of my homework and orders before the deadline yesterday. 💪
My lesson plans for next week are done. ✔️
My reading for next week's homework is already done. (I binge read the book it one sitting last night - see my last post...it was so good!) ✔️

I started reading another book I picked up from the library and I can't put it down. I heard there's a Rihanna concert on TV later, so I'm just going to read and drink coffee until then. 😍

Bookzombie Lol @ Rihanna concert! 🙂 1y

Mehso-so

I wanted to love this because I absolutely loved Cooper's Eloquent Rage, but alas. I'm obviously not the intended audience here and thus it's hard to rate, but I don't think I would have been into it as a teen. I read a YA book on feminism a few years ago (ed. Kelly Jensen) that I loved and felt it hit the mark for its audience perfectly whereas this felt like it was often talking down to teens which is alienating. Still great info here though.
