Miss Quinces: A Graphic Novel
Miss Quinces: A Graphic Novel | Kat Fajardo
3 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Rising star Kat Fajardo's debut middle-grade graphic novel about a girl who would rather do anything other than celebrate her quinceaera! A funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about navigating the expectations of family and cultural tradition. Sue just wants to spend the summer reading and making comics at sleepaway camp with her friends, but instead she gets stuck going to Honduras to visit relatives with her parents and two sisters. They live way out in the country, which means no texting, no cable, and no Internet! The trip takes a turn for the worse when Sue's mother announces that they'll be having a surprise quinceaera for Sue, which is the last thing she wants. She can't imagine wearing a big, floofy, colorful dress! What is Sue going to do? And how will she survive all this "quality" time with her rambunctious family? Miss Quinces/Srta. Quinces is the first graphic novel published by Scholastic/Graphix to be simultaneously released in English and Spanish editions!

Summer is a bust. Instead of spending time with friends, it is off to Honduras to visit family. Great family characters and an interesting look at the traditional Quinceanera versus making it a more individual affair. Lovely.

What a great book! Sue (Suyapa) is surprised to learn her family is planning to celebrate her quinces during their summer trip to Honduras. She‘s not at all comfortable with dancing, speaking in front of groups, or wearing the high heels and puffy pink dress her mom gives her. I cheered her on as she advocated for herself, agreeing to the celebration but asking for it to better reflect her own awesome, quirky personality.

Awesome graphic novel about a cool kid who doesn‘t feel like she fits the mold of her family. Beautiful representation of her culture also - it is set mostly in Honduras. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
