Seven Percent of Ro Devereux
Seven Percent of Ro Devereux | Ellen O'Clover
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
Fans of Emma Lord, Rachel Lynn Solomon, and Alex Light will love this clever, charming, and poignant debut novel with a masterful slow-burn romance at its core about a girl who must decide whether to pursue her dreams or preserve her relationships, including a budding romance with her ex-best friend, when an app she created goes viral. Ro Devereux can predict your future. Or, at least, the app she built for her senior project can. Working with her neighbor, a retired behavioral scientist, Ro created an app called MASH, designed around the classic game Mansion Apartment Shack House, that can predict a person's future with 93% accuracy. The app will even match users with their soulmates. Though it was only supposed to be a class project, MASH quickly takes off and gains the attention of tech investors. Ro's dream is to work in Silicon Valley, and she'll do anything to prove to her new backing company--and the world--that the app works. So it's a huge shock when the app says her soulmate is Miller, her childhood best friend with whom she had a friendship-destroying fight three years ago. Now thrust into a fake dating scenario, Ro and Miller must address the years of pain between them if either of them will have any chance of achieving their dreams. And as the app takes on a life of its own, Ro sees that it's affecting people in ways she never expected--and if she can't regain control, it might take her and everything she believes in down with it.

I thought it was ok. It shows how you can have good intentions creating something, but things can still go downhill.

Girl at least send the money back if you don‘t want it. As an adult, I can‘t wrap my head around burning money. I know this is a teenager (or possibly 18/19) but I want to say most real teens would just spend it on something they wanted even if they did have issues with the parent who gave it to them.

Ruthiella So dramatic (and dumb). Just give it to a charity. 9mo

This was a debut and a cute YA romance with more depth than some others. For her senior project Rose (Ro), along with her behavioral scientist neighbor, has developed an algorithm, that with some simple questions can predict a person‘s occupation, city of residence, number of children and even match you to your future mate, with a 93% accuracy rate. The app goes public by mistake and spreads like wildfire. She is recruited by a company to market🔻

robinb and tweak her app and thinks she‘s on her way to her STEM career. When she takes the test herself, she is matched with Miller, her ex-best friend that she had a falling out with 3 years before, and they must “act” publicly like a couple. As she is met with losses in her personal life and grapples with maintaining control of her creation, she begins to question the accuracy and human nature variants involved in the process. 🔻 1y
robinb Yes, this storyline is a bit out there, but it serves to highlight the unpredictability and uniqueness of each of us. It also delves into the messy and sometimes fragile relationships in our lives…those we regret losing, those we never really had and those that are lifeboats. This is a well-written and thoughtful insight into our modern lives and how that 7% margin can be the most important and precious part of ourselves. 4.25/5⭐️ 1y
