I would love to see the Amelia Peabody series done right in a TV adaptation. My biggest concern about book to screen is, however, that they won‘t be faithful enough to the original material.

The time has come for indomitable Victorian Amelia Peabody to see the world, armed with her parasol, and rescuing a young woman along the way. There‘s mystery, there‘s Egyptology, there‘s romance (Peabody might deny this), there‘s a walking mummy and there are some cracking lines!

Great fun, though a little dated in parts. Glad I got to this eventually.

I *know* book series should be read in order but I just don‘t (sorry Trish). Outcome being: I am LOVING going back to the start and hearing how Emerson and Amelia got together.

I've coveted these versions of the Amelia Peabody books for a long time and finally decided to get them. 😊 It's a bummer that not all the books in the series have been updated though.
Also shown- a petrified rock my dad found in a gravel quarry when I was 7. He gave it to me and it's been on one of my bookcases after another ever since. 💜

I do love Amelia Peabody. She‘s so very very… herself!🐊

And I‘m over the moon to discover I never actually read the first in the series! (Yes, I read series in random order 🫣 - I was actually planning to re-read from the start, but that might be tricky!)

Light, entertaining. My favourite part was the setting…Egypt, the Nile, excavation sites. The story itself was ok, but not anything spectacular.

Oooh! Someone donated a ton of Elizabeth Peters books to the library! I decided to support my library by buying them all! Getting 17 out of 20 is not bad. The way things are going I can‘t always rely on libraries to keep older series like these. Better safe than sorry right! 😅

A lot has been going on so it's time for a comfort reread.

I quite enjoyed this travel, excavation, mystery, mummy book. It reminded me of The Mummy, the Brendan Fraser version, in all the best ways. Adventure, Egyptology, a mummy mystery (although more earthly than supernatural), and a great spunky, snarky, doesn‘t put with anything, intelligent heroine trading barbs with a much more blunt & gruff excavator. It is definitely a bit dated in parts, but it fit with the time period of the story.

I‘m thinking after 2 chapters that this will be a winner too. I love a book that grabs me right from the start!!

Oof, that was way too much colonialism for my taste. I managed an hour of the audiobook and couldn‘t take any more.

Overall loved this book! It was written in 1975 so views are a bit outdated. Loved the MC Amelia Peabody, she's independent, smart and snarky. Loved the friendship formed and enjoyed watching it develop. Loved the adventure and mystery, perfect for fans of The Mummy. Ending was all wrapped up well and HEA but I might continue the series anyway but could be read as a standalone.

"I believe you would square off at Satan if he came around and inconvenienced you!"

So love the Elizabeth Peabody series!

I would like to give this book 5 stars, but I am uncomfortable with the racism. One could say, well that‘s the way it was in the 19th century, and I know this was written in the 70s, but, still. That being said, the mystery was good and I did not guess the ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So I directed Walter to pick out a nice tomb for us.
He was staring at me in the most peculiar fashion...
‘There is a nice tomb close by, I trust,‘ I repeated...‘I want the place all swept out and tidy by the time our luggage arrives. Where are your workmen? Some of them can take care of that matter.‘
‘Nice tomb,‘ Walter repeated stupidly. ‘Yes. Yes, Miss Peabody, there are several other tombs nearby. I don‘t know whether you would call them nice‘

‘He has almost the Gallic temperament,‘ said Maspero admiringly. ‘One observes the magnificence of his rages with respect.‘

Maspero, a Frenchman, commenting on Emerson, an Englishman.

Got hit by a book bullet for this one & thought I‘d try something out of my comfort zone (fantasy). Am about halfway through & am enjoying it especially after 2 so-so reads from the Rokesby series. I like the occasional unexpected flashes of amusement; not finding them forced. I like the female protagonists - ahead of their time but not out of their time. Interesting description of Egypt & archeology in which I have no expertise. 4-4.5* currently

No list of my favourite series would be complete without this series of adventure/romances about archeologists in Egypt and surrounding areas in the 1890's through to the 1920's. Fabulous characters and wonderfully witty writing make them very appealing to reread. There are 7 books missing from my shelf - I have a friend who helps herself to them whenever she visits.

My absolute favourite detective. These books are a complete comfort read for me and the audiobooks are amazing too. I love Amelia and her family and all their Egyptian adventures.

My #Top20Series list would not be complete without Amelia Peabody. Love the characters—Amelia & Emerson are THE BEST—the setting, & the mysteries. Barbara Mertz, writing as Peters, had a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago & her knowledge is readily apparent throughout the series which makes it even better. Love spending time with these characters & this is a series I‘ve read more than once.

I‘m only six books into this series of 20 featuring Victorian blue stocking Amelia Peabody and her parasol.😅 Part romance, part cozy mystery, these books are pure brain candy for me. I also highly recommend the audio books read by Barbara Rosenblatt. Books read by Susan O‘Malley are fine, but she can‘t hold a candle to Rosenblatt IMO.

I bought this mystery years ago when I was still working at Barnes & Noble. It‘s been sitting in the back of my brain for a few days so I am wondering if this is what I need to read to get out of this month long slump I have been in. I‘m not normally a mystery reader, but I may as well give it a shot since nothing else is holding my attention at the time.

I am not a fan of audiobooks with one narrator. Especially, woman-reads-man-voice. Worse yet, British woman-reads-man-voice. Plz tell me I am not the only one who lets this distract them from an otherwise decent story.

2- The Crocodile On The Sandbank (tagged) and several other Amelia Peabody novels
3- I'm totally not a beach person but I suspect Something In The Water by Catherine Steadman would be good beach reading.

Crocodile On the Sandbank is a parody of Victorian adventure novels. The mystery element was more in the tradition of Scooby-Doo than Agatha Christie. The most enjoyable part of the novel was the constant bickering between Amelia and Emerson, the cantankerous archaeologist.
Peters managed to balance the views of her characters well; they are not unrealistically modern, but they are also not so old-fashioned that they are offensive.

I‘ve been wanting to read this first book of the Amelia Peabody series for a very long time, and I‘m so glad I did! Amelia is clever, stubborn, and ahead of her time, and her voice through Peters is so often tongue and cheek. This book was well-constructed, well-paced, and well-themed, though it was still a lighter read. Looking forward to this series!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I especially liked the narrator. She was the perfect Amelia. I actually found the beginning of the end, the climax of the story as it were, to be expected and a bit boring. But overall, I enjoyed it.
