Speedboat
Speedboat | James Marshall
1 post | 1 read
With a rackety revving of motors, a daring dash, and a wondrous wowing wave, it's Jasper Raisintoast, racing up the river in his speedboat! Jasper is off in his speedy craft for a series of aquatic adventures, while his hearth-loving friend Tweedy-Jones stays behind (after all, friends don't have to like the same things). But Tweedy-Jones manages to have a high-flying adventure of his own. The eight chapters of this event-filled day end with the two friends reunited over a tasty meal of mutton and roast potatoes. In this tiny novel about a day in the life of two best friends, James Marshall exhibits once again his own admirable brand of delightful zaniness.

I read this entirely because Open Library insisted I'd much rather read it than the book by Renata Adler. It was not wrong! This is super cute and also super gay in the way of the 70s children's book authors. The two male characters share a bed and are “friends“. The author tragically died of AIDS in 1992 and his grave is marked by a huge windmill. No really. 🌈 ❤
