Alexander explains that this book grew out of a meeting with/his daughter‘s 4th grade teacher after a racially charged incident in the classroom. He realized that teachers aren‘t teaching much about slavery, mostly because they don‘t have the tools & resources to do so. (And, I‘d add, due to politicalization of education in a lot of places.) This is a sad book, wonderfully done, and the art -mixed media, sculpture - is exquisite. ALL THE STARS ⭐️
You do it
by being brave enough
to lift your voice,
by holding
history
in one hand
and clenching
hope
in the other.
#SummerSpecial Day 4: For #USIndependence, here is a powerful picturebook that came out this year. Kwame Alexander‘s lyrical text paired with incredible art by Dare Coulter is a gift provided to teachers – literally handed over – in truth and love and hope – to read with children, in the hopes of raising a more enlightened, critical, reflective generation. If you‘re looking for an elementary aged picture book that doesn‘t sugarcoat slavery, Alexander‘s new picture book is well done!
