This novel has so many amazing sentences, I could have blown up your feed with quotes! It takes a turn for the odd around the middle, & having seen a horse break down at Del Mar several years ago there were parts that were painful to read. But I‘m in awe of Smiley‘s ability to craft sentences!

“But the reason he didn‘t wish he were dead in Saratoga was that it wasn‘t polite to do so, and so nobody did.”

kathleenaflynn I really loved that book. The ending of the JustaBob storyline made me weep unrestrainedly. 7y
Lcsmcat @kathleenaflynn You had me worried! It was sad, but less sad than some of the horses who broke down. 6y

I‘ve never seen Boonville, MO mentioned in a book before! I have ancestors who are from there. 😀

Already culture has interfered with nature in the case of Froney‘s Sis - the twigs of her personality are like the shoots of an espaliered apricot tree; however nice she becomes, she may never know who she is.

Up next. Other than the constant #MountTBR, this isn‘t for any challenge or buddy read or book club. I just feel like reading something by Jane Smiley. 🙂

I love me some Jane Smiley, but I was dubious whether a "horse race book" would be interesting to me. It was, and it's one of the most intriguing multiple POV novels I've read in the past few years.

I liked this book more than I anticipated I would. Smiley writes epics, and this is no exceptions. Seven or eight plot lines, but still well woven. You learn about people, not just horse racing.
