This was worth waiting for. A well woven narrative, a lot to think about here about women, bodies, choices we make and choices that are made for us. I‘ll be checking out Zumas‘ other work for sure.

My #audiowalking habit has had to move indoors for the season. Listening to this extremely long (30+ hr) behemoth right now. Should translate to lots of circuits of the track...

UnidragonFrag I need to find something like this near me 5d
ljuliel It‘s not quite as fun walking indoors is it ? If our weather is decent, I take walks daily. It‘s about time to start back at the gym, though. I believe our outside walking weather is about over for this year. 5d
readordierachel 30+ is quite a commitment. How long does it take you to finish a book that long? It would take me months. 5d
See All 7 Comments
rachelm @readordierachel about three weeks probably? I usually finish one ten-ish hour audiobook a week, between commuting, walks, and chores. 5d
rachelm @UnidragonFrag it has brightened my mood to have somewhere to go. I use the other gym stuff too, but even when I‘m unmotivated I can walk for 30 5d
rachelm @ljuliel I already can‘t wait for Spring...😢 5d

French Exit | Patrick DeWitt

I‘d never read Dewitt before, but loved his ability to let his satire and wit just sit there and not over explore it. This one takes some interesting turns. Reminds me of Wodehouse, but modern and with more explicit sex.

The memories sections dragged a bit for me, but the main story was compelling and the characters, complex. The “humor” here is more about irony than ha-ha humor (I think some people got the wrong impression in early widely read reviews on this book.) I loved the gritty taxidermy details, but perhaps not for everyone.

Not in the Grishaverse, not YA, and not bad! This book is darker and more atmospheric than her other novels, but I like Galaxy Stern. I‘m a sucker for the melding of urban fantasy, wit, and murder mystery. If you like secret societies and discussions of the underlying privilege of higher ed (especially at Ivy schools with or without magic), add this one.

This book is an experience. Amaaaazing character development of nuanced characters and the narrator, once I figured it out, added a whole depth and purpose to the book. Okay, so there‘s not much “plot”, but you don‘t really miss it. A treatise on marriage and feminism and ambition and child rearing.

Yes. More. Need more.

#groupl #lmbpc Here are some options! I haven‘t read Cosmicomics, but I usually love Calvino (Italian). That‘s a short story collection. Kitchen and Volcano are novels translated from Japanese. Kitchen is more contemporary and Volcano is more philosophical. Pyongyang is a graphic memoir translated from French about an artist working in North Korea. I‘ve tagged them all!

lele1432 These are all so interesting! I think I'm leaning towards Calvino. I've had Invisible Cities on my TBR for a little while, and Cosmicomics sounds just as good. But I'm also intrigued by Kitchen! 1mo
Carolyn11215 I‘ve read Kitchen many years ago and remember really liking it but that‘s all I can remember about it! :) I‘m a fan of Calvino and never stumbled across this book of his so that‘s probably my first choice. Would be happy with any of the others though! 1mo
