Gryphon in Light | Mercedes Lackey, Larry Dixon
3 posts | 3 read
Set in the beloved and New York Times bestselling world of Valdemar, this 1st book in a new trilogy returns to the tales of the majestic gryphons. On the border between Valdemar and the deadly Pelagirs Forest, the gryphon hero Kelvren returns from a near-fatal self-sacrifice that won him the approval of Valdemar's ground troops, but caused a diplomatic crisis. Frustrated by his lack of a hero's welcome, Kelvren is talked into helping with an expedition by his old friend, Firesong. Firesong struggles with his own age and mortality, and he intends to solve a vast mystery at the center of legendary Lake Evendim as his crowning achievement. Just getting the multicultural fleet underway is a challenge, but what awaits them is a situation none of them could expect. Set in the beloved fantasy realm of Valdemar, Gryphon in Light is adventurous epic fantasy at its best.

I ❤️ that this is following up on the🦉 Knight series, which I need to reread, but YuCk to forcing in political commentary. I like political commentary, but it should be part of the story, and it is NOT here. Once they get that out of the way, it‘s a good book.
A griffin stops a rebellion and saves a Valdemar commander, but ancient magic is used to save the griffin, leading to complications and a quest.
3/5 read for the second half of the book

The Valdemar series is a favorite of mine stemming from high school, and I try to keep up with the new installments, even if I don't think they quite capture the spark of Lackey's earlier work. I do think it's a bit fascinating how Lackey is exploring alternately between the early and most recent history of Valdemar in her most recent books.

Wowza!! I have been waiting 23 years for this book!! Sure, I‘ve enjoyed gaps being filled in on Valdemar history, but I‘ve wanted to know what happened after the conclusion of OWLKNIGHT since I finished it in 2000. I had such fun reading this one— though it makes me want to re-read all the Valdemar books all over again! I loved seeing familiar characters again, as well as newly introduced ones! This journey is thrilling; I can‘t wait for more!

Light_of_Aether I'm happy to see another series about the gryphons, and another Valdemar fan! 9mo
TorieStorieS @Light_of_Aether Same!! My father-in-law started reading them last year, too! I have been a fan for so very long that some of my mass markets are literally falling apart from re-reads!🤣 9mo
Light_of_Aether Wow! That's a lot of re-reads! I haven't read the entire series, but I started reading them in publication order a few months ago. I'm still on Arrow's Fall 😂. I'm not fond of the second half of the book which is why it's been taking so long. How is your FIL enjoying them? I feel like Mercedes Lackey isn't very well known compared to other authors. 9mo
TorieStorieS @Light_of_Aether I think I started reading her in 1994-ish when she had a bigger following… My FIL isn‘t reading them in publication order- he stumbled across the Albrecht duology in a single volume and started there. He‘s been skipping around a bit, but overall liking them more than I expected! But he‘s enjoyed most of my fantasy favorites, though I never gifted him one of these! 9mo
