This book looks at the cost of racism through the zero-sum theory. This is a theory that mostly rich, whites use which says that if we (whites) give up something, someone else is gaining on that. The ones gaining will be unworthy or lazy since they can‘t do this on their own. Then the rich people manages to persuade the less wealthy about this. This effort the labor organization, public healthcare, the fight against polluters and so much more.

AnneCecilie This was an eye opener for me on why some will vote against what will benefit them. I‘m so glad this was on #SheSaid reading lust even if I read it a month later. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa My last book read in September #SummerEndReadathon @TheSpineView #RushAThon @Andrew65 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES 13mo

I should have written the tiny print before I started listening to this one. Imagine my surprise, two hrs into the audio and the mystery almost solved and there‘s four hrs left. This is a collection of four stories: Murder in the Mews (naturally), The Incredible Theft, Dead Man‘s Mirror and Triangle at Rhodes. Once I got over the fact that this was four stories, I quite enjoyed them.

Hugh Fraser also did the audio for three of the stories.

TheSpineView Well done! 13mo
BarbaraJean I did the same thing with this audiobook—I was so confused when everything seemed to be wrapping up so quickly! 13mo

Catching up on some reviews.

I‘ve been following Jen Campbell on her YouTube channel for years. This is one of her favorite books, and when I saw it in the bookstore I knew that I had to read it.

This book was different from what I expected and there was more than one surprise here.

Second book in this trilogy. Sunny is 13 y/o but her behavior seems mature for her chronological age. Since a year has passed, the story is more mature and complicated. Again there are parts that could be excellent for discussion with minors. I still like parts of this world and love Sunny. Definitely I‘m not the best audience for this trilogy. This book has a rating of 4.23⭐️In GR. My opinion is unpopular. 3⭐️I will finish the trilogy.

I wanted to read this book for a long time because it is well recommended. I liked but didn‘t love it. I think is too unnecessarily long but I never felt bored because you want to know about these characters. It is about this selected group of unlikable students who attend this special program of classics with this eccentric professor. A murder occurred and you know who did and how from the beginning of the story.⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) So this is a character driven story. I don‘t know about that ending. But I like that academia aspect of books and quotes. It was well written but too long with not much happening, it goes around and around of these guilty destructive feelings experience in different ways by each character. Like a Greek tragedy, no hope just self destruction. The author is the narrator in the audiobook. 3.75⭐️ 13mo

I have mixed feelings with this trilogy. I read the first two books. I like the world and the characters, specially Sunny, main character. For what I read, this first book can be read by children from 10 or 12 years old. I‘m not the best audience for this book and I‘m not an expert in the area of children‘s literature. I think some parts should be open for discussion with the younger ones if that is the case. Maybe other adults disagree with me⬇️

Gissy Sunny is albino but in the story something magic happened which for me is like not accepting her true self if that is the message in the book, acceptance. There are parts of physical punishment from parent and teacher and I didn‘t see this part explained or resolved in the story. It was like part of the culture? I don‘t know. Chichi, a 13 y/o girl used to sell things at the market by her own. There are men making inappropriate approaches and⬇️ 13mo
tpixie Lots of complicated story lines! 13mo
Gissy (Cont.) Chichi called them perverts and laughed at this behavior. My concern is that not all 13 y/o minors will have the skills, experience or maturity to manage this type of behavior. Again, this was not discussed in the story. Chichi likes to smoke because that relaxes her. The minors leave the house at midnight to assist to this magic school. The professor is the one who determined the time so they go without authorization⬇️ (edited) 13mo

Gissy (Cont.) Minors in this story goes from 12 to 16. Later the mother knows about Sunny‘s leaving the house but didn‘t ask because this is related with the magic. The professor has such authority that in front of the mother, commands Sunny to take her things and go with him, the mother?...silent. According to author, Akata is a rude word for black American or “foreign born black person” but this is the word used as a title for this trilogy🤷🏽‍♀️⬇️ (edited) 13mo
Gissy (Cont.) But my opinion is unpopular, this book and the whole trilogy has a rating of 4⭐️Maybe I‘m too old?😂But I think these topics I mentioned can be good for discussion with minors is a way to interact with them. Too many parts very similar to Harry Potter🤔
But I like Sunny. 3⭐️
