Romney: A Reckoning | McKay Coppins
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
A remarkably illuminating biography of one of Americas most fascinating political figuresincluding news-making revelations from Mitt Romney himself about dissension within todays Republican Partywritten with his full cooperation by an award-winning writer at The Atlantic. Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trumps GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that presidents supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection. Despite these moments of public courage, Romney has shared very little about what hes witnessed behind the scenes over his three decades in politicsin GOP cloakrooms and caucus lunches, in his private meetings with Donald Trump and his family, in his dealings with John McCain, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Mitch McConnell, Joe Manchin, and Kyrsten Sinema. Now, exclusively for this biography, Romney has provided a window to his most private thoughts. Based on dozens of interviews with Romney, his family, and his inner circle as well as hundreds of pages of his personal journals and private emails, this in-depth portrait by award-winning journalist McKay Coppins shows a public servant authentically wrestling with the choices he has made over his career. In lively, revelatory detail, the book traces Romneys early life and rise through the ranks of a fast-transforming Republican Party and exposes how a trail of seemingly small compromises by political leaders has led to a crisis in democracy. Ultimately, Romney: A Reckoning is a redemptive story about a flawed politician who summoned his moral courage just as fear and divisiveness were overtaking American life.

Mehso-so

Mitt wants everyone to know that he‘s a VERY GOOD PERSON. A man of CHARACTER, INTEGRITY, & PRINCIPLE who‘s anguished over his MANY IMPORTANT DECISIONS because he‘s always been concerned about his LEGACY, PUBLIC SERVICE and the INSTITUTIONS of DEMOCRACY. Meh. He‘s not much more self-aware, or less self-important, than DJT. A well-written book about an earnestly decent yet dull person who comes off sounding like a sanctimonious scold. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hooked_on_books Somehow, this doesn‘t surprise me. 9mo

DocBrown Me too, @Hooked_on_books, me too. I'd like to think that I've evolved and loosened up since then, but maybe I haven't? Maybe my reaction to Romney is based on the fact that he and I are cut from similar cloth? I don't know. 9mo
DocBrown Thank you @Suet624!! 9mo
Ephemera Mitt‘s father was a decent guy. 9mo
DocBrown @Ephemera I agree. I admire them both for their decency and courage to rise above petty, craven politics. It‘s mind-boggling where the GOP is today compared with the Eisenhower years. 9mo
Ephemera Ike was the last decent Republican President. 9mo

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Journalist McKay Coppins dives deep into the life and political career of Mitt Romney. Compiled from calls, texts, emails, and personal journal entries, this is thoughtfully organized and executed, starting with the Jan 6 insurrection then going back in time. A “how we got here” explanation. This felt pretty honest and unbiased. I‘ve certainly gained some respect for Romney, and not just because we share great disdain for JD Vance.

A fantastic book. Copping charts Romney‘s unlikely journey from being among the most “flexible,” ideologically slippery politicians to an implacable bulwark of decency and democratic virtues. Romney gave her all his emails and private journals, and they deliver again and again. I‘m glad I voted for him years ago, but I will never vote for anyone who didn‘t stand up against Trump. I don‘t think Romney will either.

marleed I believe he is on the right side of history. 13mo
