This is the second Elaine Equi book I‘ve read this week. I liked the first one so much that I picked up this one as well. I didn‘t love all of them, but I really enjoyed most of them, and I got a lot of ideas for my own work as well as a list of words to try out that I don‘t think I‘ve used in my own work yet. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!! #poetry

Last book of 2023! I have a bit more success with this poet. I still run into the occasional word salad where I can't tell if the poem is incomprehensible or I just can't comprehend it, but by and large, I fully grasp and enjoy the way Equi plays with words, especially around colour, and how often she touches on relatable subject matter. Though I will say there were some questionable moments in the earlier work included in this collection.

Robotswithpersonality In this collection, favourites include:
Word and Sentence: finding less common words and creating sentences for them. 🤌🏼
Perverse Patriotism: the ones that manage a guy punch in a couple tiny verses. 👌🏻
My heathen self also appreciated Things to Do in the Bible
To Harry Crosby at the Hotel Des Artistes: feels like a historical artifact - a moment in time
Beauty Secret: felt like a kindred spirit
Second Thoughts: relatabely quirky
Remorse After Shopping: title says it all, speaking directly to my younger self

I recognize that I'm attuned to finding green but considering this is the second time this colour has appeared in a poem in this collection, the cover design is starting to make a lot more sense.

Perhaps my favourite type of poem: playing with words in a manner that resembles a dictionary, thesaurus or etymology. 🤌🏼
