This book had so much going for it. Vampires, Nazis, Romania, a mysterious keep, threats to the world, good vs. evil, a star-crossed love story, etc. It began so well but got so boring and contrived. An early book for the writer, he just doesn't get the female character right either. She is a cardboard figure. Her love story is awkward and happens way too quickly. Finally, when we find out what is actually going on, I felt like....huh?

Pickpick

I remember watching the movie with my dad as a kid. I was so excited to find out it was a book. And a great one at that. I found it to be far better than many of the horror novels I've read from the last two decades. Great story. Fast pace. Nice and dark. Wonderful horror. Can't wait to read the rest.

Nazis, with an assist from a Jewish folklorist (when are we gonna learn how important everyone is and we need to work together?) and vampires in the Transylvanian Alps. This book kicks off Wilson's Adversary Cyle (and may provide background on his Repairman Jack series; I don't remember reading any past this one, but now I want to 'cause I recall this is a pick). Also a fun film was made from this. #photoadaynov16
