By-the-book forensic scientist Harry Steinbeck and rogue BCA agent Van Reed must catch a cold-case killer who's returned to abduct a small town's children one by one in this heart-stopping novel from the Edgar Award-nominated author of Unspeakable Things. In 1998 an Alku, Minnesota, family of five was brutally murdered in their sleep. The event shook the insulated community but, without any solid leads, was relegated to the cold case files, where it moldered for twenty-five years. Until today. Agent Harry Steinbeck hoped never to return to the northland, a place that holds terrible memories of his sister's abduction. But when a recent homicide is connected to Alku's unsolved mass murder, he and cold case agent Evangeline Reed have no choice but to investigate. The case grows impossibly darker as, one by one, the children of Alku begin disappearing. And Harry and Van can't shake the sensation that someone is watching every move they make. As an elusive killer's trail leads to a truth more sinister than either imagined, Harry knows there's only one way to crack this case: he must finally face the secrets of his own past--even if doing so will cost him everything.

As you follow Steinbeck and Reed through a tough case that involves children in a small Minnesota town you will be holding your breath. Cringing as the pieces start falling into place. It makes you feel like you are in the dark and dreary woods. Along the wet streets. In the motel as they are trying to get some rest. These two stop at nothing to get at the truth.

While ultimately I liked book 1 & Van‘s POV better, this case creeped me out so bad! I also enjoy how the author combines urban legends &supernatural elements with regular old horrible human behavior. The blood witch &religious element of Alku had my blood running cold.
I‘ll be excited to see where the series goes.

Kristy_K I also liked Van‘s POV better but agree this one was very creepy! 2mo
5feet.of.fury @Kristy_K it was still really good! But Van got way more backstory & personality where Harry was shown as defined by 1 event. I‘ll be interested to see if the POV is split in the next one since it seems like their personal coldcases will converge. 2mo

Twisty installment in a good series. Loved the creepy setting: a MN village with a prison nursing home. It‘s full of Finnish immigrants and secrets, but slightly preferred the pov of the female cold case agent in the previous book. Looking forward to the next book. 4.5 stars. #mystery #uniquesetting

After loving the bk 1, I was excited 2 get my hands on bk 2. This time we get Harry‘s POV as he &Van head 2 NE Minn 2 work a brutal murder which may be connected 2 a serial killer who‘s been incapacitated for yrs.
The great development of side characters along w/a unique plot makes this bk hard 2 put down. As with book 1, I also loved seeing Harry & Van work together, their personalities complementing each other in the way all great crime duos do.

5feet.of.fury I literally JUST finished book 1, this might be my sign to jump right in to book 2! 3mo
Kristy_K @5feet.of.fury Definitely a sign! It‘s a great book and series. 3mo

With the cliffhanger ending of THE TAKEN ONES, I didn‘t hesitate before diving in! While the first book alternates the current cold case with Van‘s past, & her the primary narrator, this one focuses on forensic detective Harry & his past with his missing sister & a current cold case in a remote MN Finnish town with its customs & deadly secrets. I enjoyed a character with #FragileX though I wish this had been addressed in the author‘s notes.
