Ghostly read for today‘s Scarathalon prompt. Cute little nonfiction guide to ghosts from my home region. Middle grade & YA would be ideal readership. CT chapter was too light (author only wrote about one place in all of CT, Mystic), but rest of it is spooky Fun. 3.5 stars. #Scarathalon #ghostprompt #YA #TeamSlaughter #16points

The Barking Murders is a dramatized, serial killer true crime series from the UK. Killer Stephen Port, portrayed by Stephen Merchant, at first glance has a strange but harmless quality. Merchant is frighteningly great in this dark departure from his comedic roles, but the real focus of the show turns out to be the victims families‘ quest for justice. #serialkiller #tvshow #TeamSlaughter #Scarathalon 6points

Nonfiction from the cool & skilled writer Meg Hafdahl for today‘s Scarathalon prompt, “killer.” It‘s been in my TBR pile for a long while, as I have published Meg‘s fiction & love her writing, but primarily read fiction. Highly recommend this creepy mystery about a too-perfect small town! Suspenseful drama around a cold kidnapping case leads to a killer twist. A gaslighting fiancée leaves pregnant reporter Joan off balance. She was warned to stay out of the basement, and what she finds made me more sad than scared, but it‘s another well-plotted turn in this compelling tale! #mystery #creepy #smalltowns

So the very cool Jess Lourey taught a Book on a Bag workshop at Bouchercon. Kinda intimidating for a short story writer… who is a “pantser” anyway. My characters kick any outline to the curb. Dare I try this method? Reading her award-winning thriller seems easier! I will start there… #thriller #writersread

Poignant, brutal, achingly original story of two very flawed fathers looking for revenge following the murder of the gay sons they rejected. No wonder it just won the Anthony for best novel. And no, I am not stalking Shaun Cosby at Bouchercons. Not really. Ok, maybe a little… #5stars #powerfulread #voice #faveauthors

No wonder this collection of crime fiction by writers of color is up for the Anthony Award! Great stories in varied styles. The opener by Tracy Clark has a fun twist. Navarez‘s “Docs at Midnight” offers suspenseful blackmail & a bittersweet look at former lovers. Highly recommend all these short stories. #anthology #diversebooks

As a writer & thriller reader, I am not sure that genre is exactly what this novel is, but the book‘s a clever, thought provoking & surprisingly funny look at Black women working in the institutionally racist American publishing industry. Great narration. I had hoped for a different arc for main character Nella but this is definitely a fascinating listen! #slowburn #plottwists

“Sparkle is serious business.”-Miss Rita and her son. Enjoyed the authors reading this sweet, brave, glittery book about a boy whose father is coming to read to his class. Perfect gift for friends & relatives who are adopting! This sweet picture book is special because it addresses adoptions both foreign and domestic (books often showcase one or the other.) just heard the author, whose teens were adopted from US and China read it aloud, and this book is one our new favorites. Librarians, this would be an inclusive, fun addition to any collection! #kidlit #adoption #picturebooks #diversebooks

“We slept in what had once been the gymnasium.” -Atwood. The ominous tone of this story of women valued only for their fertility is frighteningly appropriate! Anyone who can get pregnant in America lost today. People of color and poor folks will of course pay the highest price. Rape survivors will be re-victimized when forced to carry their rapist‘s child. Women will die. Welcome to America. #firstlinefridays #reproductivehealthcare

Fine beach read . Yet author didn‘t make me feel invested in the characters. At times it reminded me of “The Guest List” and at one point of the original novel “The Flight Attendant,” and both of those have better characters and tension. I saw/heard the ending coming. Narrator did a good job, though. #3stars #mystery #characterization

Complex exploration of the abuse of power by a teacher & statutory rape that‘s too intense for me. Prose so vivid that it‘s disquieting. “Trigger warning,” is an overused phrase (feeling sad or angry is not getting triggered y‘all) but the tone & spot-on dialogue between the teacher & the teen are so realistic that survivors might want to skip this one. Narration is too good. A plot twist is coming, but I‘m bowing out. #statutoryrape #sexualabuse
