I Think They Love You | Julian Winters
7 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
With his funny, big-hearted adult rom com debut, bestselling, award-winning YA author Julian Winters shows sometimes fake dating your ex can turn into a second chance. When Denzel "Denz" Carter's workaholic father and CEO of 24 Carter Gold unexpectedly announces his retirement, the competition is on for who will become his successor. To convince his family members that he's capable of commitment, Denz impulsively lies about being in a serious relationship. Now Denz needs to find a fake boyfriend to seal the deal on the CEO position. Denz is forced to turn to the last person he wants to be in a pretend (or any) relationship with: Braylon, the man who broke his heart. Braylon's sudden reappearance in Denz's life turns everything upside down. But, apparently, he needs Denz's connections to the mayor to win his own promotion. So, they strike a deal. It's all business until the funny texts and the confusing kisses leave Denz struggling to separate this temporary arrangement from the affairs of his heart. I Think They Love You is a celebration of love, queer communities, big families--in all their beautiful complications-- healing, and, most importantly, falling in love with the person you're becoming.

Pickpick

A low pick mostly from the unbelievable standpoint of some of the story. I just don't buy the idea of party planners being these media darlings, it was all a bit much. I also HATE that Braylon comes back from 4 yrs in London with an accent (I tried the audio of this and couldn't do it) and the competition. BUT even with all that I enjoyed the bones of this second chance + fake dating romance. Denz is a believable and sympathetic character. 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures The writing is good and the pacing clips along. I think it is a romcom you just cannot think much about (like I wish the author would have thought up a fake social media platform, using Facebook in the year of our lord 2024???) It sounds like I don't like this and am picking it apart, but really I read it in a couple of days and was invested in them getting together for real. 5d
willaful You know, I always found fake social media in books annoying but you point out a very rational reason to use them... 5d
ChaoticMissAdventures @willaful I always think cultural things are going to date your book, and when it comes to technology it can date it extremely fast. Things move quick! I cringe now when I see FB or Twitter in books. Even if those sites were part of most of our lives a few years ago. Same with popular celebrities, I hate when I read people idolizing Bridgette Bardot all I can think about is how she keeps going to court and paying fees to be racist! 5d

Unhinged rom-com thought

Do NOT reward a person who went on a couple years exchanged to a foreign country and came back with an accent by sleeping with them.

😂

This plot point is the most randomly annoying 🤣

peanutnine Yes! I thought it was so weird that he came back with an accent!! Like, seems fake dude 6d
ChaoticMissAdventures @peanutnine this is a forever joke of exchange students, but IRL we teased and bullied them until they stopped. Only the most annoying and pretentious travelers do this, so I am not sure what the point is here. Not cute. Not charming. 25 yrs raised in the US and 4 yrs in London is NOT giving you an accent unless you are a git. 6d

A much nicer Valentine's Day read! Denz runs into the man who broke his heart in college, just when he needs a fake relationship to prove he's serious enough to take over his father's party planning company. I enjoyed his twitterpated pining and the big wacky cast of family and friends, plus there's a nice growth arc for him. If you yearn for romcoms with black and queer characters, this was literally written for you.

Denz needs to prove that he is serious enough to take over the family business now that is father is retiring and thinks a pretend relationship is the way to go. Who am I to question his logic when it somehow means spending time with the ex who broke his heart but still makes ir race. A fake dating, second chance romance with a big interfering family and a hero I want to sit around and dissect rom coms with, I had a lot of fun readjng this book.

Veteran YA writer Julian Winters‘s adult debut is all kinds of moreish with its punchy prose and characters so vibrant you know they‘re off living full lives even when they aren‘t in Denz‘s orbit. Add in plenty of jokes, a few wacky hijinks, and an ever-applicable knowledge of the romcom canon and you‘ve got something that‘s mighty hard to put down. If you‘re at all interested in contemporary romance, you want it when it drops on January 28th.

peanutnine Ooh I'm looking forward to this one! 5mo

I was gonna save my ARC of if I THINK THEY LOVE YOU for the new year, but I couldn‘t resist starting it last night and I‘ve struggled to put it down since. It‘s exactly what I feel like: a contemporary romance with great energy and vibrant characters.

The beer was 100% a can buy that paid off. It‘s a tasty, low-alcohol offering that goes down easy with a bit of a bite. $0.10 from every can goes to artist Cyndi Wiebe, too.

willaful Tempting cover... 5mo
TieDyeDude We had that Disney World glass growing up! Beer sounds good; I like that they pay the artist royalities! 5mo
Kristy_K Loved this book! I also had a hard time putting it down. 5mo

xicanti @TieDyeDude there are a fair few artist-partnered breweries in the Canadian beer landscape right now! I love seeing their cans on the shelf. 5mo
xicanti @Kristy_K I was sad I was too tired to finish it last night. Gonna remedy that this afternoon. 5mo

Not me hiding my Kindle during the steamy parts &hiding my tears during the serious moments while on a plane (the laughter I figured I could get away w/). This book has it all.

I originally grabbed this for the cover. 2nd chance romances are hit &miss for me, but I like fake dating so was curious how much I‘d enjoy it. I loved it! The handling of both tropes was done so well &every character had rich &complex personalities along w/growth.
