The Killer Question
The Killer Question | Janice Hallett
10 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
Get ready for the sudden-death round... Mal and Sue Eastwood have disappeared. One day they were the kindly landlords of the local village pub, The Case is Altered. They ran a weekly pub quiz and were well liked by their punters. The next day they were gone, leaving nothing but unanswered questions. Did they run because the pub was failing? Was it because of the body pulled from the nearby river? Or perhaps their disappearance had something to do with the quiz? It had always been a quiet affair, five teams of locals battling it out for a small prize pot. Until one day a mysterious new team of outsiders arrived, and started winning every round... Only by sifting through the quiz sheets, the WhatsApps, and Mal and Sue's hidden past may the truth be revealed. Someone's not playing fair, so get the drinks in and see if you can get a perfect score.

What a fun read! I very much enjoyed this book. It‘s quirky and entertaining with some fascinating characters. I could just imagine all the bickering taking pace between and within the quiz teams. There are a few twists, turns and surprises along the way. It‘s very much a page turner with some laugh out loud moments. It‘s another winner from Janice Hallett for me.

If I hadn‘t started this last night as I was falling asleep, it would have been a one-day read for me. I love Janice Hallett, I‘ll read anything she puts out. I had a couple of good snorts of laughter throughout this and while I understand why people thought the first half kinda dragged, I enjoyed the repetitiveness. The one-star reviews killed me.

I‘m sad to say I didn‘t love this book as much as I wanted too, and the ending kind of felt a bit like what, that‘s it? I love Janice‘s books but they aren‘t all hits for me.

The premise for this one wasn‘t as strong out the gate as her previous novels but the second half redeems it - and I was HOOKED - I‘ve been in such a reading slump of late and this managed to get me to read my Sunday away!

Wow, I managed to guess a bit of this--that may be a first for me with Hallett! It's possibly because I listened to it. Honestly, I don't know if I could read most of her books in print--it's the amazing cast of dozens of British accents that really does it for me.

I found the plot a little disappointing in terms of justice, and some of the characters rambled on oddly with no payoff, but it was mostly good twisty fun.

I'm always excited for a new Janice Hallett, and as a former Triviamaster at my local Brewery this one was the perfect palate cleanser for me. It is ridiculous and over-the-top, the first section is a bit overlong and repetitive, but I just don't care. It was as entertaining as I'd hoped, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

There's nothing odd or creepy about the Shadow Knights.

ARC read on behalf of Station Books.

Another funny, twisty, epistolary mystery from Janice Hallett - this one revolving around a local pub quiz.

Great fun as always. Parodies the eccentricities of British life in a very amusing way. I was more invested in the quiz drama than I was in the actual mystery!

Could have done with losing 100 pages or so, and the plot was completely ridiculous, but still a raucous and entertaining read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
