Shortly after the First World War, an informer's body is found on the estate of the Quintons, a wealthy Irish family. The British Black and Tans, led by a zealous sergeant, torch the family home, killing Mr Quinton and his two daughters. Fatherless, young Willie Quinton grows into manhood while his bitter, alcoholic mother's resentment festers. But though Willie finds love with Marianne, he seems unable to forget the injuries of the past. Can he ever escape this terrible cycle of violence? Winner o fthe Whitbread Novel of the Year Award 'A wonderfully moving and important book.' Molly Keane 'Arresting, powerful and indelible. A story of courage and love . . . as tender and wistful as an Irish lament.' Washington Post

This tackles an important point in history but it does it in such a way that all the “action” happens off screen. I found myself frequently confused a major event would have occurred in the book but you would only find out what and how much later in the story, it was all shrouded in subtle hints as if the reader was meant to know what those hints meant. Perhaps other readers did, perhaps it is just me that missed it.

I finished 8 books in September, which is a number I'm happy with. Not as much diversity in September as I would like, but for the most part, the books I read were very good. My current reads are more diverse, so October should be a better month for that. Lots of reading planned for October! #septemberstats

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟- A beautifully written novel that takes place in the unrest of 1920's Ireland. I wanted to start reading it again when I finished. I ❤️William Trevor.
