All the Way to the River: Oprah's Book Club
All the Way to the River: Oprah's Book Club: Love, Loss, and Liberation | Elizabeth Gilbert
10 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AN OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB PICK "A delicious mashup of narrative that's by turns harrowing and healing." People Entertaining, insightful, wrenching punch-to-the-gut powerful. The Washington Post A blockbuster: brutally honest, lurid, transcendent, and compellingGilbert is undoubtedly a force. Boston Globe In her first nonfiction book in a decade, the #1 bestselling writer who taught millions of readers to live authentically (Eat Pray Love) and creatively (Big Magic) shows how to break free. In 2000, Elizabeth Gilbert met Rayya. They became friends, then best friends, then inseparable. When tragedy entered their lives, the truth was finally laid bare: The two were in love. They were also a pair of addicts, on a collision course toward catastrophe. What if your most beautiful love story turned into your biggest nightmare? What if the dear friend who taught you so much about your self-destructive tendencies became the unstable partner with whom you disastrously reenacted every one of them? And what if your most devastating heartbreak opened a pathway to your greatest awakening? All the Way to the River is a landmark memoir that will resonate with anyone who has ever been captive to loveor to any other passion, substance, or cravingand who yearns, at long last, for liberation.

Gilbert is one of those memoirists that I want to roll my eyes at half the time but the other half I want to hug her for getting at such universal truths about human nature. I did enjoy this look at the death of her long-time friend turned partner Reyya Elias and the insight it gave her into her own problems with sex and love addiction. It‘s a #borrownotbuy for me.

Suet624 A good description of my relationship with her as well 2w
Megabooks @Suet624 she‘s an interesting woman for sure, and I appreciate her introspection. The book I‘ve really loved from her was The Signature of All Things. When I read that in 2013, it just hit at the right time. (edited) 2w
Suet624 Yes, I liked that one too. I wish you would write more fiction. Elizabeth is quite able to deliver a line in a unique and special way that can hit you right in the heart but sometimes I just feel like she‘s a bit of a poser. 2w

Instead of my favorite, I‘m tagging that one in in the middle. I think it‘s my second time ever, I‘ve left a book unstarred. The book is just so crack-is-wack that I can‘t get my thoughts together.

5 ⭐️= Loved It, would recommend to others. A+
4 ⭐️= Liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3.5 ⭐️ = Close to either pick or so-so
3 ⭐️= Meh, no need to discuss. Avg C
2 ⭐️=Nope D
1 ⭐️=DNF F

IriDas You still finished it? Brave. 👏 2w
Suet624 Haha. Crack is wack. 2w
Seabreeze_Reader For many readers, I think that author's books are either in the take it or leave it category. Author aside, I'm skeptical of most O! Book Club picks now anyway. 2w
marleed @IriDas @Suet624 @Seabreeze_Reader EPL was published shortly before the trajectory my life took a 180, and reading it allowed me to think beyond my conditions. I‘ve read all her books and many Dear Ones newsletters. I you-tubed her interviews on this one but I remain wary. Maybe for me she jumped the shark with this memoir. 2w
Seabreeze_Reader That's great you liked her other books and this one just missed the mark for you. Thanks for the additional information. 🙂 Just for me personally, I don't connect with her writing. 2w

Powerful & emotional. Gilbert‘s honesty about love, sex addiction & codependency is brave. Hard to read at times but unforgettable.

During a recent trip to Sedona, Az, we visited historic downtown Flagstaff. My favorite place to shop is the Bright Side bookshop. They boast an excellent selection of genres and local interests. Although I rarely purchase books when traveling by air, I couldn‘t resist a signed copy of Elizabeth Gilbert‘s latest memoir, ‘All the Way to the River.‘ I wrote about my visit on my blog.

Texreader Dang! I “flew” right through Flagstaff after picking up son from university in Prescott this last May. We were loaded down with all his stuff moving him back home for the summer. Maybe next time we need to plan a trip this bookstore 3w

NatalieR @Texreader Oh wow! You were so close! 😃 It‘s definitely worth a visit if you have time. 3w

I‘ve read all EG‘s books, not sure if I loved or hated this but I kept reading. Oprah posted a video of her mentee, Thando, whose response captured my thoughts. To paraphrase: Yes, I read EPL, saw the movie, have the merch. But Liz‘s decisions aren‘t EPL - at all. This is secrets you take to the grave. But she is sharing with us - all the way to the river. ….Yes, Thando! Also, Liz‘s previous writings for Dear Reader are now suspect for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I admire Liz Gilbert as a beautiful thinker, deep feeler, and generous storyteller. In “All the Way to the River”, she shatters the human experience wide open - laying bare her most precious, complicated love story and her surrender to her truth and higher power. This memoir feels less like a book and more like an offering: painfully, tenderly, exquisitely told. 🎧

Oh, Liz Gilbert! What a precious human. Liz‘s unabashed honesty and high-vibrating spiritual approach to self-reflection, addiction, and messes of one‘s own making is a gift that I think can help those open enough to receive it. All the way to the river is an ode to the real, raw complexity of life and the flawed individuals (a.k.a. all of us) who are trying our damndest to work our way through it. 4.5 ⭐️🎧

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elizabeth Gilbert gets dark in this one… Memoir of her relationship with her best friend, Rayya, who she declares her love and leaves her husband to be with when Rayya is diagnosed with advanced cancer, and each of their struggles with addiction that are triggered in different ways by the experience.
