The School of Velocity
The School of Velocity | Eric Beck Rubin

A wrenching and deceptively spare debut novel about an electric friendship between two boys that slowly reveals itself as a deep and lifelong love. Jan DeVries is a virtuoso pianist who would be in the prime of his career but for the crippling auditory hallucinations that have plundered his performances and his mind. As the disorder reaches its devastating peak the walls Jan has built around him crumble, rendering him unable to repress the overwhelming flood of memories and the troves of unspoken words that linger between him and his childhood best friend, Dirk Noosen, with whom he lost touch long ago. He is faced with only one recourse: to head home and confront him. With a singular voice and a masterful balance of emotional resonance and restraint, Eric Beck Rubin tells the tender story of Jan's obsessive friendship with the charismatic, irreverent raconteur Dirk as the reader breathlessly awaits their reunion. This luminous novel is about music, repression and regret; about adolescence, sex and friendship, and, ultimately, about the kind of love that lasts a lifetime.

The biggest achievement of #myreadingweek this week was definitely finishing (the last 800 pages of) Infinite Jest, aside from that my pick was School of Velocity. I'm ready to start on my Christmas reading now the beast has been slain!

vivastory I must say I am enormously impressed that you finished "Infinite Jest." Was it easier to read on the Kindle? 8y
Moray_Reads @vivastory So much easier! Just the physicality of dealing with its bulk and flipping to the endnotes made the paperback a chore. It's a difficult enough read without having to contend with that 8y

Pickpick

A deceptively simple story about the complex and ambiguous relationship between two men. it's difficult to pin this one down but it's a fine debut.

Twitter has brought this August 2016 novel to my attention, about a virtuoso pianist haunted by some traumatic mystery involving his childhood friend. There are only a few reviews on Goodreads so far, all of them glowing; it's safe to assume most of them have been penned by his friends and family. But it does sound interesting, and the author isn't hard on the eyes either… :-)

Moray_Reads Just ordered this! Might as well put my 25% off to good use 👌 8y
