The Golden State: A Novel | Lydia Kiesling

Mehso-so

I wanted to like this...I really did. So much of it was unique, from plot to writing style. A single mother heads to northern CA for a hiatus from her life/circumstances & encounters quirky characters. But the sentence structure that lacked, well, ANY structure became exhausting, the lack of connective plot detail left me frustrated & the constant self-analysis by the narrator was far too indulgent for my tastes. 2.5/5 ⭐️

MicheleinPhilly Ugh. Yes. I felt the same way. 6y
EmilyM I felt the same way. The only reason I finished it was because I got it as an ARC from Netgalley. 6y
cathysaid @MicheleinPhilly @EmilyM Your commiseration makes me realize it wasn‘t that I just wasn‘t “getting it” but that this is a style that will definitely only appeal to some. I guess I just need my commas and periods and FOR GOD‘S SAKE A LITTLE STRUCTURE to enjoy literature. 6y
BarbaraBB So sorry. I loved it 💜 6y
cathysaid @BarbaraBB I saw that in the reviews 😬 And clearly many liked it if it made the #ToB long list. It just never clicked for me 🤷‍♀️ But I‘m glad you liked! 6y
