This novel was not at all what I expected. It was so much better. A dystopian story from Indigenous point of view, expelling the systemic prejudice that tries to take over their lives. In the process, their community grows tighter and stronger as times become more desperate. The final straw will shock you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Suelizbeth @Tamra that‘s my next read! 📚❤️ 5d

Short and stressful! It was like being a lobster in a pot of lukewarm water set on a stove, heating up so slowly you don‘t realize you‘re dying until it‘s too late. And I mean that in the best way! (53)

#FoodandLit #Canada An interesting read about a community finding themselves with no power or outside communication. What they do to survive the long winter. I'm going to read the second book of this series. #SeriesLove24 #ReadAway24 @Texreader @Catsandbooks @Andrew65 @DieAReader @TheSpineView @GHABI4ROSES

I liked this. Most of the story takes place in the year following an EMP attack. It‘s how a rural mountain community is able to gather and ration what they have and work as hard as possible to survive impossible conditions. Many don‘t survive and there is a lot of violence. Not the most polished writing, but the story is thought-provoking and engaging. And bleak, especially near the end. It inspired some great conversations with my family.

ItsAnotherJen Such a good series! My dad recommended it to me, and it was fun to have something to talk to him about since we usually don't read the same books 1mo

Listened a second time in preparation for the sequel. I enjoyed it even better! Narrator has the perfect voice and accent for it. 😁

I think this novel especially appeals to me having grown up in an isolated AK Native village. It has a familiar ring.

Bookwormjillk I can‘t wait to start the sequel 1mo
Tamra @Bookwormjillk me too! I‘m so glad you posted about it. It may be a while before my hold becomes available. 😬 1mo

I love this book and wanted to re-read before I read the sequel later this month. What happens to an isolated community when the world ends? #FoodAndLit #Canada

Bookwormjillk @Tamra I think the audiobook for this was so well read. Hoping the second has the same narrator. 1mo

San Antonio, Texas has had an outbreak of a particularly virulent & deadly form of flu & have been cut off from the outside world by a perimeter wall built around the city. Hundreds are dying every day & have to be buried in mass graves. Det Lily Harris works collating burial statistics & notices a body that doesn't seem to have been autopsied & a bullet wound suggests that this is a murder victim hidden amongst the other dead.

OutsmartYourShelf As the police investigation intensifies, they uncover a conspiracy involving those in charge who are intent on hiding the truth from the public.

To say this was originally written over a decade before Covid, it sure got a lot of things right: masks, lockdowns, & staying so many metres apart. It could have been really good except for the fact that the MC, Lily, is a horrible person using fatphobic & homophobic language to describe people.

OutsmartYourShelf In books like this where the MC is fighting for survival, the reader has to become invested in their story, but I really couldn't care less if Lily survived the pandemic or not. 2⭐
