All the Young Men | RUTH COKER. BURKS
post image
Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A horrifying telling of the how gay men and others with HIV/Aids were treated throughout the 80s and 90s. There is controversy around the exageration of how many men Coker supported and buried but even if she reached half the men she says she did, that is a feat that not many people can say they did. In her writing, I was fanscinated by the theme of power and contacts and how often these cropped up when trying to support dying people.

Bad Gays: A Homosexual History | Ben Miller, Huw Lemmey

Bailedbailed

This is a weird DNF for me, because I did enjoy most of what I read. The beginning was tongue in cheek, yet informative. Near midway, it‘s like the intellectual caps were put on, and it became textbook and dry. The ‘bad‘ is also not quite as bad as I was hoping. Some of the people were so ambiguously bad that I didn‘t really even know why I was reading about them. I wanted some extremes. If you‘re gonna do dry, give me the hardcore.

Singout I was at a demo recently for people supporting a drag performance in a library, with a lot of protesters outside. One of them was trying to use Bible quotes, and the Anglican priest there took his ignorance of history and theology to pieces, bit by bit. It was beautiful. 10mo

willaful I marched with my parents-of-trans-kids support group in our local pride and if there were any jerks, they were completely drowned out by all the cheering. 10mo
TheBookHippie @willaful they were fairly loud, however it‘s how it is here. We just ignore. We have really good security and hired police to protect us. Thankfully the day went well. 10mo
mcctrish My ‘hood had its pride event the day I went out of town to see the first run of a new play about when Princess Diana came to Toronto to visit the aids hospice, Casey House, so I missed all the dingdongs with their signs with misspelled slogans and misdrawn rainbow flags #howdumbarethey 10mo

JoyBlue Gorgeous kimono on a gorgeous lady! Thanks for posting this book (and the photos). Our library doesn't have it in the collection, but I was able to put a hold on it from our consortium. It won't likely arrive in time to read during Pride Month, but that's OK. I'll enjoy it just as much in July. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 10mo
TheBookHippie @JoyBlue I own it!!! It‘s like an Encyclopedia coffee table book. Excellent read. It‘s stunning. 10mo

Decided to hop on the 2023 Reading Brackets train! I‘m doing two competitions (fiction and nonfiction) because I read both genres equally. Tagged is my nonfiction pick for January. It‘s a fantastic read that I picked up thanks to my #AuldLangSpine list from @Deblovestoread 🙂
