New Poets of Native Nations | Heid E. Erdrich

Pickpick

Great showcase of a broad range of talent.
Delves into heavy topics you'd expect, all the ways colonialism has stripped indigenous people of their land and culture, and traumatized them in the process. There is also beauty and strength and moments in individual lives.
Primarily US-based contributors, I would love to find a similar volume containing poetry from First Nations poets located in territory now known as Canada.
⚠️Self harm

Robotswithpersonality I've got to shout out the formatting: instead of cramming a bunch of bios or bibliographies in the back, each poet's section starts with a single paragraph alone on a page, indicating credentials and previous works. 2y
Robotswithpersonality Personal Favourites:
38 - Layli Long Soldier
Excerpt from Nature Poem - Tommy Pico
Passive voice - Laura Da'
Dome Riddle - Natalie Diaz
I Tinituhon - Craig Santos Perez (the pleasure of working for it, sounding it out)
Heart Butte, Montana - M.L. Smoker
Abracadabra, an abcedarian - Karenne Wood

TMT = Thirty Meter Telescope installation on Mauna Kea. 😑
Which at least for the moment seems to have been stalled.

Incisive.
Reductive?
Let's just say it's a generalization not without cause.

"...I cut [my hair] in mourning/for the old life but I grow/my poems long."
Something about the imagery, what was taken and what was chosen, what was grown in protest.
Facing the destruction of the past, acts of creation allow for hope.

Un-fun facts to learn and tell. 😬
I did always wonder about the correct past tense, not that that's the important part of the poem.

Pickpick

Poems written in a variety of styles - song, verse, or prose- by poets from different parts of the country and different nations. Topics range from colonialism, decolonization, nature, tradition, to genocide. Impressive collection of voices I had never heard before.
