Our current read from #Shelterboxbookclub is set in Hawaii. It‘s a historical fiction of members of Hilo town community facing Mauna Lao volcano eruption.
It‘s also sad to see that Hawaii and it‘s people are experiencing real tragical events. I have never visited the islands but hope I can one day.
pickA brilliant, quick read but so impactful!
The first part describes the internal displacement of Malala and her family, eventually, settling in the UK. Followed by young girls‘ stories around the world. Such inspiring and heartwarming stories! Not all stories might have resolved outcomes but hope is what shines through them.
We so often here the word ‘refugee‘ but don‘t realise the journeys people had to make to get where they are now ♥️
pickBhima works for Dubash‘s household and Serabai is a well-off Parsi housewife. They share a strange friendship due to their close ties, however, not to overcome the social class norms. The story is filled with heartbreak, sacrifices, poverty and domestic abuse. Each woman suffers from their own destinies and circumstances.
I really enjoyed their inner dialogues revealing their thoughts and reasonings to have a better insight into the characters.
pickMy first story set in Brazil and I loved it! André lives a privileged life in Rio together with his father, brother and two maids (empregadas), Rita and Luana. While Rita is like a mother to him, he desires Luana…
There are clear disparities of class and race in this story. I enjoyed this read as it provided an intimate look into a relationship between the empregadas and the employers, although, the story is explicitly from André‘s perspective.
pickI just love the way Evaristo uses language to convey such passion. She is an incredible writer. She cleverly uses different flashbacks to drop in background stories which completely alter your interpretation of the current events. Superb.
I wanted to share this amazing & inspiring book I have read back in 2020.
It tells a story of Edna and her life in Somaliland as well as her brief visits abroad. She is truly a woman of many firsts with extraordinary achievements in her home region having overcome many challenges.
Such a great read for #InternationalWomensDay !

pickWe, the Survivors is my first selection from the #ShelterBoxBookClub .
This book moves slowly, almost limping along in some parts, echoing the stilted walk of the main character. Immediately in the story we learn that Ah Hock has killed someone. Why and how?
I‘ve learned a lot about life in Malaysia and about migrant workers and refugees. Who are the real survivors in this book?
Even though its pace is slow I really enjoyed this book.
pickI didn‘t know much about this book as I have received it through the Shelterbox Book Club but I‘m glad that I have read it.
I have enjoyed the way the story was told. Learning more and more about the main character as well as what led to that infamous night.
