This was the last book I finished in June. It‘s a memoir by a comedian/Daily Show host who was previously a lower level pro tennis player. I really enjoyed the parts of it about his pro days, which were nothing like what the top tennis stars experience. Wimbledon week was a great time to read it. This book was recommended by Sarah from Sarah‘s Bookshelves.

What did I just read? I think this is about hair-made balls, tennis (or a game similar?), sex, and the colonization of Mexico by Cortés. But honestly there was so much going on and switching of stories that (I think) were supposed to be interconnected. I would have DNF‘d but I was using this for multiple reading challenges and was also trying to keep an open mind.

I suspect this book was intended to be about friendship with a look into addiction as a mere subplot. Perhaps more broadly, it told the story of intense people who pour their whole selves into what they do, be it their sport, their profession, or their relationships. I read it, however, as a book about loneliness. The author, Abraham Verghese, wrote himself into this book. Surprisingly, to me, he was the most lonely character of all.
This book could be an inspiration to young girls about dreaming, and then chasing your dreams and working towards success.
This reminds me of the recent movie that came out. But the illustrations in this book were awesome and it was nice to hear the story in a different way.
