The Tennis Partner | Abraham Verghese
9 posts | 15 read | 25 to read
An unforgettable, illuminating story of how men live and how they survive, from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Cutting for Stone When Abraham Verghese, a physician whose marriage is unraveling, relocates to El Paso, Texas, he hopes to make a fresh start as a staff member at the county hospital. There he meets David Smith, a medical student recovering from drug addiction, and the two men begin a tennis ritual that allows them to shed their inhibitions and find security in the sport they love and with each other. This friendship between doctor and intern grows increasingly rich and complex, more intimate than two men usually allow. Just when it seems nothing can go wrong, the dark beast from Davids past emerges once againand almost everything Verghese has come to trust and believe in is threatened as David spirals out of control.

I suspect this book was intended to be about friendship with a look into addiction as a mere subplot. Perhaps more broadly, it told the story of intense people who pour their whole selves into what they do, be it their sport, their profession, or their relationships. I read it, however, as a book about loneliness. The author, Abraham Verghese, wrote himself into this book. Surprisingly, to me, he was the most lonely character of all.

I loved Cutting for Stone and this one by Verghese has been on my tbr ever since. I am sorry to say it disappointed. It is autobiographical and tells about his career as a doctor and teacher in a Texan hospital and about his friendship with an intern, David, with whom he plays tennis and talks. There is a lot however, David doesn‘t tell. The result is very personal but not necessarily interesting for the reader. #Booked2019 #BookAboutAddiction

BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks for the review. I loved Cutting for Stone too, but now I don‘t have to stack this follow up. 👊🏻📚♥️ 5y
BarbaraBB @BarbaraTheBibliophage He wrote this one before Cutting for Stone 😅, he obviously matured. So I am still looking forward to his next one. 5y
Amiable If you haven‘t read “My Own Country” yet, definitely do! It covers the years before “The Tennis Partner” And is light years better. It was incredible—I‘d have given it 6 stars on Goodreads if I could. @BarbaraBB @BarbaraTheBibliophage (edited) 5y

BarbaraBB @Amiable Thank you! I didn‘t know about that one! I‘m glad you say it‘s much better! 5y
Reggie I like how him and his wife discussed their arranged marriage in here. Which is sad because they‘re divorced now and he has another family. I totally second My Own Country. Loved that book. 5y
BarbaraBB @Reggie That is one of the better parts indeed, their talking about their marriage. I think Verghese is a master in writing dialogues. 5y

Well this should give you an idea of how my reading comprehension is going these days. I had no idea this was a memoir until the Author Acknowledgements on page 343. Thanks to @kspenmoll for the gift of this book. ❤️

kspenmoll 💕you are so welcome! 6y
Reggie I liked what he had to say about how arranged marriages lasted in this book. Unfortunately, I think him and his wife separated later. His first book My Own Country influenced me in my young 20‘s in a great way. 6y
JennyM It doesn‘t feel or read like a memoir, so I can understand thinking it was fiction. I loved it, too! 6y
Suet624 @JennyM Thank you!! 6y
Suet624 @Reggie I‘m going to look for his first book. I lived in Tennessee and would love to hear what he says about his experience there. 6y

#OctoberXFiles

A colleague with excellent taste in books has told me I must read this, by the talent that is Abraham Verghese. It‘s his memoir, and focuses on his friendship with a med student who has experienced the #DevilSide and is recovering from a drug addition. So far, the writing is exquisite.

TrishB Sounds interesting. 6y
Amiable Have you read "My Own Country: A Doctor's Story" already? I'd read that one first. That is the prequel memoir to this one. It is a stunning piece of work. It details Verghese's work with HIV patients as an infectious diseases physician in rural East Tennessee in the 1980s. It's nonfiction but reads like a novel. 6y
BarbaraBB I really want to read this one. I loved his 6y

This elegantly written, haunting book, speaks to many issues within the context of a deep friendship, begun with a tennis game, between two men,one of whom is a recovering addict.Their friendship is interrupted & ultimately cut short when the “beast” of addiction or as Verghese names it, “a disease of the soul”,rears its head.

BarbaraBB It is the first time i hear of this one but it sounds good. 7y
kspenmoll @BarbaraBB It took me a few chapters to really get into it, but once engaged I could not put it down! 7y

“Don‘t confuse shame with guilt, he said eventually. “Shame says, “I am the mistake, while guilt says, “I made a mistake.”You made a mistake, but you are not a mistake.”
Only on p.5 of prologue-thinking I may like this book. Brook club pick for March. #bookclub #truth

Reggie This was a sad story. I do like the way him and his wife explain their marriage to his tennis buddy, though. 7y
kspenmoll @Reggie Thanks for your comments! Still only read a few pages- on the Cape with 6 of my sibs - lots of book talk but little reading! 7y
