Wow! This is a shocking but fascinating story. How Holmes thought she could get away with it? Blind optimism? Too much faith in her ideas? Did she set out to deceive everyone? Be interesting to see what sentence she gets. Thank you for putting this on my radar @shadowspeak17 #newyearwhodis #nywd

janeycanuck I highly recommend listening to The Dropout podcast - the first season covers what you‘ve read in Bad Blood but the second covers the trial. 3d
PathfinderNicole I read yesterday that one of the streaming services (Hulu I think?) is making a show about this based off The Dropout podcast! 3d
Beachesnbooks i'm obsessed with this story--the Dropout and Bad Blood podcasts are also worth a listen!! 2d

Unsheltered: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver

Mehso-so

I really liked the beginning of this book; the characters, crumbling house, dual time line and I found myself nodding along to all the discussions. Then it felt repetitive and like I was being lectured. Good ending tho. 😆 (and of course, good ole Barb sure can write!!) #authoramonth

squirrelbrain I haven‘t noticed the repetitiveness yet…but I‘m only halfway through… Yes, you actually finished a buddy read before me! 🤣 (Got distracted by To Paradise…) 1w
kathedron She does tend to get a bit didactic, but the writing's such a joy I'm not as irritated as I'd otherwise be. 🙂 1w

What a cracking start to the year! With Talented Mr Ripley vibes, a jaded creative writing teacher steals a plot from a dead pupil…! My ambitious TBR pile to get me through January. Including my #authoramonth and #newyearwhodis picks.
Also my chunkster challenge for 2022. It‘s going to take me months to get through as I‘m going to read in between other books but that‘s ok, I‘m going to take my time as I get lost in Penman‘s beautiful writing. 😉

Well this was fun! A classic murder mystery in an isolated location in the Scottish Highlands. Great characters to hate, fast paced writing and a plot that kept me guessing till the end. Just the sorta fluff my harangued brain needed right now. 😆 👍

A soft pick. The beginning and ending were great but there‘s a good 200 pages in the middle that, because of a stupid plot point, really dragged and we‘re frankly boring and annoying. It‘s very hard to root for Rin in this book and I loved her in the first book. Hmm.

Caroline2 Did anyone else find it really annoying when Rin lost her powers?! For me, the story lost all interest then and just became a bog standard war trauma retelling?! 2mo
Vansa Given that Rin is supposed to be Mao Zedong in a fantasy setting, she's definitely not meant to be sympathetic! 2mo

The Netflix series of this is very different and actually much better. I was v poor growing up, my parents both worked two jobs. Some of this is really poignant but other parts she comes across as whiney (esp as she‘s nearly 30) and she makes some bad decisions, like she can‘t afford food but then spends $200 on a diamond ring to prove to herself she‘s worth it?! A lot of this didn‘t sit well with me….

Readswithcoffee I agree about the whining and poor decision making. It made me CRAZY. Also, I felt it lacked introspection as to what led her to be in the situation to begin with, which I find to be a common problem of memoirs in general. 2mo
GingerAntics I‘ll be avoiding this book, then. It drives me crazy when people make really stupid decisions like this, since then people make assumptions about all poor people making bad decisions that “make them poor” like it‘s a choice. I wish someone would pay an average poor person who does everything they‘re “supposed to” and is still poor to write a memoir, just once. 2mo
KatieB I felt the same way about this book. I definitely wanted more introspection! 2mo

Caroline2 @Readswithcoffee Yes!! I completely agree. 2mo

Laura Purcell is one of my favourite authors, I would read her shopping list! This is her third book and while it still has the beautiful, atmospheric writing and creeping dreading of Corset & Silent Companions it‘s a lot more melancholy. So, my poor kindle has finally died. 😔 guess that means I need a new one!!! 😃 any recommendations? I‘m thinking of the paper white but my husband reks it might be worth paying more for the Oasis. 🤔

Coleen_Nieto I recently bought the Oasis and I do like it a lot but I don't know that it's so much better that it justifies the cost. 3mo
TrishB I love my paperwhite. But I‘m not really sure about the differences with the Oasis, that seemed more like a tablet. 3mo
Lcsmcat I love my water-resistant paperwhite. I‘m not sure what the Oasis does that it doesn‘t. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
slategreyskies I have the Oasis, but not the Paperwhite. The Oasis is the best ereader I‘ve ever owned. I love the little bump that runs across the back. It makes it easy to hold. It‘s backlit too, if you want it to be, which makes it easier for me to read. I like that I can adjust the size of the font and that I can put it in a warm mode where there‘s not a lot of blue light. I don‘t know how many of those features the Paperwhite has. 3mo
Birdsong28 I say it depends on how much you will use it as if you use it regularly then spend the extra money and get an oasis but if you don't use it regularly then get the paperwhite. 📚📖 3mo
slategreyskies Also, the Oasis has physical page turn buttons, in addition to the screen touch, while the Paperwhite doesn‘t. (edited) 3mo
Twainy My paperwhite goes with me evvverwhere. It‘s unobtrusive. What is the difference? Is the oasis bigger? IDK, I don‘t have an Oasis so I can‘t speak for it. I do love my paperwhite, it‘s a book workhorse 😁 congratulations whatever you decide on!! 🎉 3mo
OutAndAbout I‘ve owned every Kindle and bought an Oasis as a luxury buy for myself. I love it. I worried about the shape but it‘s a pleasure to hold, the lighting is perfect, and water resistant to boot. The Paperwhite is an excellent option and is 90% the same functionality, and the Oasis is probably overpriced. But if your husband wants to spoil you with the upgrade, I don‘t regret it. 3mo
quietjenn I have both and I actually like my Paperwhite better. The Oasis buttons are nice and I like that you can hold it either way and adjust the lighting, but I prefer the size and shape of the Paperwhite and tend to use it a lot more. But it's a win either way! 3mo
Flaneurette I have and had many iterations of both, if I were to buy one today I‘d probably get the new paperwhite. Now that the paperwhite has the warm light I‘m not sure the physical buttons and ergonomics of the oasis are worth it. The oasis also doesn‘t have the best battery life and it is slippery with its metal case. 3mo

I should have trusted my instincts and bailed! The constant back and forth in time was annoying and the modern segments were dull compared to the dark, childhood flashbacks which were too brief for me to really care for the characters. It‘s very predictable with a “twist” you can see a mile off. And it‘s depressing with so much child abuse. Meh. 😒

TrishB I‘ve just put this on my list to read this week! 3mo
squirrelbrain I quite liked this one 🤷‍♀️ - didn‘t love it but it was a good, distracting read. 3mo
Caroline2 @TrishB hopefully you‘ll enjoy it Trish. It just felt like one of those thrillers that I‘ve already read, if you know what I mean. 3mo
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain think maybe I‘ve read too many thrillers lately. 3mo

This was great fun! Joe is such a great character and I just love hanging round him in his crazy world. What a cracking thriller. I can‘t wait for the fourth book and the next Netflix season. 👍

Oryx New series coming in Friday I think. Can't wait! I really need the 4th book too. 3mo
Caroline2 @Oryx I just watched the season 3 trailer and it looks completely different to the book!! 😯 so exciting!!!! 👏 😁 3mo

I didn‘t realise what a seasonal reader I was till I went on Litsy! 😂 I love reading spooky, gothic, witchy , scary reads in October! Considering I average about a book a week this TBR pile is MASSIVELY over ambitious… just how I like it! 😊 🍂 🎃 🧙‍♀️

RaeLovesToRead Ooh... some good picks there!!! ❤ 4mo
squirrelbrain Maybe a *little* bit ambitious…. 🤔 4mo
candc320 Some really good books in that pile! I loved Heart Shaped Box. 4mo

Practical Magic | Alice Hoffman
post image

Does anyone know what order I should read these in?? 🤔 Amazon and Goodreads aren‘t very helpful with their 0.1 etc order?! Or are they stand alone and it‘s doesn‘t really matter?? 🧐

Johanna414 I've only read Practical Magic and Magic Lessons, but they felt kind of like stand alone stories that had minor references to characters from the other books. I would read them in publication order 4mo
mcctrish I read somewhere that the published order ( that‘s what I read them in; Practical, Rules of, Magic lessons) is not the same as chronological ( time for a reread) : Magic Lessons, Rules of Magic, Practical Magic. Granted I only read the first 2 and there is a 4th Book of Magic 4mo
BookwormAHN I just read them in chronological order: Magic Lessons, Rules of Magic and then Practical Magic. The first two are the best. 4mo
mdm139 They explore the history of Owens family. So if you want to start at the beginning, start with Magic Lessons(my favorite one). Book 4 comes out October 12 which is also the last book chronological. So if you want to start at the end, wait until book 4 comes out. 4mo
Caroline2 @mcctrish @Johanna414 @BookwormAHN @mdm139 Thanks guys! 😀 I already have Magic Lessons so I‘ll start with that one first and go for chronological order. 👍 4mo
