In the third book in Barker‘s Women of Troy series, we are given the story of Agamemnon‘s return to Mycenae. We know what will happen, but Barker provides us with an excellent retelling, setting up a story of revenge that picks up speed as we read. Baker writes beautifully, but I did take exception to her decision to use modern idioms and phrases. What she might gain in attracting younger readers, costs her a feeling of power in an ancient tale.

Super interesting retelling of the period between the sack of Troy & the Greeks returning home… a part of the myth I don‘t believe I‘ve ever read about in this much detail. Loved it! Plus #bookspin lost for Jan (how on earth is it 2025 tomorrow?!?)

The story of the downfall of Troy in a nutshell. Although I had a vague idea of things (the war, Helen, Achilles, the Trojan horse etc) I wasn't sure of events & who had fought on which side, so reading an 'accessible to newbies' version such as this one is a good introduction. It's written in Fry's distinctive droll style but I find it impossible to say I enjoyed reading it mainly because all the characters are just so...awful. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Few, including & maybe especially the gods, have little redeemable about them & I would have hated to have a been a woman living in those times. 3⭐

The Trojan War | Bernard Evslin

I'm slowly making my way through my collection of Trojan War stories.
The author refers to Ulysses (Odysseus) as the "boldest pirate-king." What an interesting description. It gives a vivid idea not only of his character but of his ancient lifestyle in so few words.
