Sorry to Disrupt the Peace | Patty Yumi Cottrell
Mehso-so

The book felt more enjoyable after thinking that it was told from the perspective of a mentally I‘ll character. I don‘t mean that badly, as someone who has Asperger‘s. The story is very quirky, and Helen is a terrible investigator into the cause of her adoptive brother‘s suicide. It was interesting that the novel did not use any quotation marks for people speaking.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
Before & After.
This was as good as Before we were yours. Touching stories from real life adoptees & children of the adoptees. What happened, what they think happened & what they learn from searching for documents and DNA findings. #georgiatann #beforewewereyours #beforeandafter #reallifestories #adoptee

Helen Moran is difficult to be around, alternately highly empathetic and completely clueless about other people's perspectives, but I like her. She reminds me a little of beginning-of-the-novel Eleanor Oliphant, but I like Helen better. Her growth is more realistic and nuanced than Eleanor's. This novel feels like a truthful depiction of the experience of living with mental illness. Longer review on my blog, if you're interested.

Butterfinger Gorgeous! 4y
ImperfectCJ @Butterfinger Thank you! Unfortunately, this butterfly didn't survive her/his transition out of the chrysalis. I think it's just been a little too chilly here. 4y
Butterfinger Oh no. This is the year my milk weed garden should do well. I hate that. 4y

Audiowalking with this odd little book (tagged) and some clouds that are quite satisfactory.

Crazeedi What a lovely view!! 4y
ImperfectCJ @Crazeedi Indeed! It's one of my favorite spots. And a photo is nice because you get the view without the sound of the interstate. 😂 4y
dodgygothbint That's a gorgeous picture! Where is it? (Somewhere in America, presumably, since you've said 'Interstate'!) 4y

ImperfectCJ @dodgygothbint Yes, it's in San Diego, California. We have a lot of blue-sky days, but it looks even prettier with clouds, I think. 4y
dodgygothbint @ImperfectCJ I agree! The clouds are lovely ☺️ 4y

#booked2019 @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage finished this book, my "reminds you of your happy place" choice because it occurs in Milwaukee, where I grew up.

I didn't feel the book really knew what it was trying to be. Mystery? Family study? Commentary on adoption, racism, and mental illness? And I felt the ending fit poorly with the story. But that might just be me.

Cinfhen Ugh!!! Sorry it wasn‘t a happy read ☹️but at least you completed a prompt 🥳 5y
alisiakae Too bad your happy pick wasn‘t a happy read! It sounds like it covers a lot of heavy topics. 5y
nudibranch @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft for sure! Ah well, good exposure? 5y

I wish I could say I snorted with laughter, or cheered, but what I really did was let loose a grunt like a rhinoceros, from a diaphragm spasm, at the shock of insight this afforded me. #superattractive #readwoc #booked2019

alisiakae My daughter is currently writing a research paper on the piano and famous composers. I‘m going to show her this quote. 5y
nudibranch @4thhouseontheleft yessss! Fantastic! 5y
nudibranch @4thhouseontheleft hopefully her research brings her into contact with Clara Schumann. White, yes, but female, and unquestionably more influential than her husband in the composition scene 😊 5y
alisiakae @nudibranch she plays the piano, and is a Clara Schumann fan. 😃 5y

Bailedbailed

I barely got through 40 pages of this pretentious crap before I wanted to tear it into pieces. The name thing that I mentioned before was annoying enough. But the writing itself was painfully ridiculous and try-hard. It was like stream of consciousness but from a robot that was fed a combination of kids books and college philosophy term papers. And maybe someone also spilled cocaine on the robot‘s motherboard. HARD NOPE. GOODBYE. 👋🏻🖕🏻

mcipher Damn. Great review. The cocaine part made me laugh! 6y
alisonrose @mcipher Well then at least one good thing came out of it! 🤣 6y

Uh-oh, this does annoying name stuff. The narrator‘s roommate is referred to as “my roommate Julie” every single time. And flipping ahead, I see she refers to her parents as “my adoptive parents/mother/father” every time, too. Uuuuuuuugggghhhhhh whhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I‘ll keep going but already that‘s gonna knock the rating down.

MelissaSewell ☹️ That always gives me the feeling their publisher said they had to have a certain word count so they add as many superfluous words as possible just to get the numbers. Generally that will make me shut the book and give it up. 6y
alisonrose @MelissaSewell Yup I‘m DNFing. The writing is also terrible in general. Uuughhh 6y

This doesn‘t have great ratings on Litsy or Goodreads, but there‘s something about it that is still really drawing me to it. And hey, it‘s only 265 pages, so if it sucks, it‘ll only be half as annoying as Manhattan Beach 😜 #nowreading
