I (re)read this book for my kids‘ fantasy book club at the library. For some, it was their first experience with an epistolary novel! It‘s a format I adore, so I was honored to introduce them to it. I love that the tale is utterly wacky (invisible, levitating, shape-shifting, bossy chickens!) while also being a gentle exploration of grief (for Sophie‘s abuela, with whom she shared a special closeness, and for her uncle, whom she‘d never met).👇🏻

monalyisha 1/4: It‘s also a story about a whole family finding their way in a new place, wrestling with race and class struggles in an age-appropriate way. These systemic problems are not the focus of the story…and yet, they do not go unmentioned. Sophie deals with grown-up things (like sometimes kids are made to) on her level; the grown-ups deal with grown-up things in the background and have their own hints of story. Expert-level nuance here!  2w
monalyisha 2/4: The villain‘s character falls a little short. Her motivation is explained but it‘s a bit shallow and unmined, especially considering the drastic actions she takes. Sophie‘s dad is still finding his way at the end of the book. I‘d love to have seen the seeds of a clearer and more unique path laid out for him. 2w
monalyisha 3/4: The writing in the section about the cockatrice chicken could have been sharper. It‘s the darkest chunk, in terms of mood, and the writing is murky to match. I‘m not convinced all of the details were necessary, especially given that the writing seems to prove a subconscious desire to obscure them. 2w
monalyisha 4/4: There‘s a second book, which I‘ve never read. Were I the intended audience for the book, I‘d dive right in! Given that I‘m an adult with my own reading needs, I may never get there…but that has nothing to do with the book and everything to do with me! A gem, sparkling brightly with funky chicken charm and practical facts. 2w

My favourite Sy Montgomery so far. A couple of enjoyable hours on audiobook, even as the book delves not just into the personal delight of keeping chickens, or the wonders investigated in the science of their cognition and behaviour, but also into those aspects of chicken behaviour which may dismay humans, and the reality that predators/carnivores and factory farming exists.
1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 Regarding the audiobook, if you're struck by an immediate case of the giggles when confronted with the contrast between cool, calm intro and closing voice (main text read by the author), reading out title and copyright details backed by *CHICKEN NOISES*, you're not the only one. 🐔🤭

Saffron, a city girl from DC, inherits her uncle's chicken farm in Hawaii. While getting the place ready to sell she encounters- and solves- several mysteries. This is the first in a series so we're introduced to a lot of people in town and given the lay of the land. I'll probably read the next one.

Quirky and fascinating, I love experiencing the natural world through Sy Montgomery‘s eyes. This love letter to our most common avian friends was funny and interesting, made me smile, laugh, and think. Short too, about 2 hours on #audio and read by the author.

ncsufoxes My oldest child would probably love this one. He loves birds (wildlife biologist major). At his university they have chicken that are free to roam on the campus. The university even has an instagram account for the chickens. 2mo
kspenmoll My neighbors raise chickens & they hobble about my yard fertilizing it( we do not use anything on our lawn in terms of fertilizer, weed killer, etc. It‘s a neighborhood thing). I will definitely suggest this to them! Thx! 2mo

This was almost a 5-star read for me; I wished there was more book! The 70 pages about chickens didn‘t seem like enough to capture their quirks and style. It‘s still a lovely little gem of a book that would make an excellent gift for the fowl lovers in your life.

Op shop scores from a wk ago at Salvos Charlestown. Sometimes I‘m lucky enough to find clothes that fit me in the kids section which means they are cheaper eg. The striped 👗. I bought it to wear to work as it‘s cotton & we don‘t have air conditioning in many rooms at 🏫. It was only $4 & is size 16 kids. I did a demi character in my last 🩰 exam as a kid to 🌅 Boulevard 🎶 so keen to 🎧 to that again after so long! The socks are for my nephew 🎣

TheKidUpstairs Love that yellow striped dress! 5mo

Interrupting Chicken | David Ezra Stein

This book will be very useful in the beginning of the year as a lesson to help younger students learn the importance of raising their hand and not shouting out. I also think the teacher can get very creative with lesson planning to help get the point across.
