Frances's husband is working in Saudi Arabia as an architect in the 1980s. Joining him, she is Isolated by the strictures placed on women and the lack of anything in common with other expat wives, she descends into paranoia - but perhaps they really are out to get her.

Beautifully descriptive writing but I didn't feel engaged apart from a few chuckles at the start as I recognised a few situations and characters from living abroad in the 1980s.

Perfume from Provence | Lady Winifred Fortescue

This was wonderful! I loved the humorous picture of a Provençal village in the 1930s. Ex-Pat Lady Winifred was someone who (self-portrayed) loved a good time and enjoyed the wild ride of remodeling a home in a new land, with a different language and culture. A few descriptions are a little cringey, but overall I really enjoyed it and will absolutely put this in the reread pile.

I couldn‘t put this one down once I‘d started. The themes in it and of course the story are both relevant and kept me hooked!

⭐️⭐️💫

The stunning cover grabbed my attention - the story, not so much! It felt slow and it was easy to get lost with all of the characters. 🎧

I really enjoyed this book! This is the November Read With Jenna pick and I‘m so glad I was able to read it this month. This was a book full of friendship, love, and finding yourself. It tells the story of three friends and one man and how their lives all intersect. It was such a meaningful read.

britt_brooke Such a striking cover! 2y

A House in Sicily | Daphne Phelps

This is the house, Casa Cuseni, I stayed in last year when I visited Taormina, Italy. It has a very interesting history. I stayed in the room that Greta Garbo frequented. This house was the perfect place to stay, with its antiques, art and gorgeous gardens. The view of Mt Etna from our terrace was amazing! The house also has a dining room that contains a mural painted on the walls of its original owner Robert Kitson, his lover and their adopted ⬇️

Rissreadswithcats Child. Homosexuality was a crime at the time. To protect the men portrayed in the paintings, and to protect the paintings themselves because of the subject matter, the room was closed for 100 yrs and only opened in 2012. The book details the rich Sicilian lifestyle of the niece of the original owner Kitson. She became the guardian of the house and spent her lifetime preserving it. 2y
Jeg I just read The 7 husband's of Evelyn Hugo. A fictional account of hidden gay Hollywood. So interesting to read your account of your visit. 2y
