Wide Sargasso Sea | Jean Ryhs

As a Jane Eyre fan I‘ve been hesitant to pick this up, but glad I finally read it. This origin story of Mr. Rochester‘s first wife elevates her from “madwoman” to “woman driven to madness”—an important distinction. Unaccepted by her home country, her family, and finally her husband, Antoinette Cosway‘s only loyal companion is excruciating alienation. So heart wrenching!🔸#julyreads2021

alysonimagines And I was astonished to learn that it took author Jean Rhys over 20 years to write this novel of under 200 pages! Next time I feel like it‘s taking me forever to finish something, I‘ll remember Rhys and honor my own pace. 3y

The second book in the Sidekick Squad series, featuring Bells Broussard, a trans boy who has the amazing ability to shapeshift into anyone else. I love that the Sidekick Squad represents a variety of racial, ethnic, and queer identities, but all of the characters‘ identities flow very naturally into who they are.🔸#julyreads2021

The Battle for WondLa | Tony DiTerlizzi

The third and final book in The WondLa Trilogy, a middle grade space opera that I decided to re-read for my book club‘s July re-read theme. Like the second book, I didn‘t remember much at all about the storyline of this one, either, so it was a fun, nail biting thrill ride. I practically inhaled most of this on a Saturday.🔸#julyreads2021

The first book of a fun middle-grade superhero series. I love the title (not saying I can relate 😉), and I got attached to endearing MC Jessica Tran, a teen girl who‘s half-Chinese, half-Vietnamese, bisexual, and (to her dismay) doesn‘t seem to have inherited any superpowers from her famous local superhero parents.🔸#julyreads2021

When I‘m in the thick of my own real-life drama, my book picks tend to yo-yo back and forth between light-hearted and melodramatic. I read both ends of the spectrum in July. What do you like to read when you need to escape from the stresses of your life?🔸#julyreads2021
