Any interest in a buddy read of this book? As a native North Carolinian I‘m ashamed to say I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m thinking something very informal, like #magicmountain and #myvodkabromance were, and starting in September? Give me a holler if you‘re interested.

Butterfinger I'm interested. 5y
Butterfinger @Lcsmcat I ordered my book for September. 5y
Lcsmcat Excellent! Let me know when it arrives. 5y

Sorry, @SharonGoforth - but the pace picks up at the end and I stayed up way too late and finished. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I‘m going to hold off on my review until you finish, so no spoilers. 😀 #magicmountain

SharonGoforth It may take me awhile, so don‘t hold back on my account ☺️. Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on it! 5y

@SharonGoforth I can‘t wait until you get to “Fullness of Harmony!” I have so many comments. 😀 (I don‘t know your musical background, but if you don‘t recognize the pieces he mentions and want to listen to them, let me know and I‘ll ID them for you.) #magicmountain

SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Thanks! You‘re way ahead of me . I‘m only at the point where Naphta has been introduced. I love classical music, so hopefully I‘ll be able to follow along☺️🎶. 5y

Sometimes Mann comes out with something so good I have to read it out loud to whoever is in the room. #magicmountain @SharonGoforth

SharonGoforth I love Mann‘s writing. I‘m in chapter 6 now. So glad I have the all English translation, as the French dialogue between Hans Castorp and Frau Chauchat was incredible! 5y
Lcsmcat It was! She‘s quite the character. I got so much reading done at the beach last week that I‘m about halfway through Chapter 7. I‘ll try not to post spoilers, but I can‘t stop reading. I also found an interesting article in the New Yorker about the place that inspired the novel. https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/to-the-magic-mountain 5y

“...the genius of a silence so definite that it was less a negation than a refutation of speech.”

I love Mann‘s description of a cemetery. Beautiful.

Lcsmcat His prose is so powerful that he made me feel cold when he described the snow storm - and I was on the beach. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat His prose is amazing. So glad we‘re reading this! 5y
Lcsmcat Me too. I probably wouldn‘t have tried again on it if we weren‘t reading it together. 5y

SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat ☺️📚 5y
Lcsmcat How goes it? I‘m eager to hear what you think about the last two chapters! (They‘re so long I feel like he should have called them “books,” but he didn‘t.) 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I‘m afraid I‘m a bad buddy reader - I started 4 books this weekend and haven‘t finished MM yet. Plan is to get back to it today. 5y
Lcsmcat @SharonGoforth I do that all the time! I‘ve got three buddy reads going right now not counting MM, plus another book on my Kindle. Just tag me when you post so I don‘t miss it. 5y

Herr Settembrini is bad enough, but when Naphta starts pontificating (yes, I chose that word intentionally) I have to put the book down and stare at the ocean. #magicmountain @SharonGoforth

Woohoo! My all-English translation of The Magic Mountain is here! I also bought a commentary! Almost tempted to read the Woods translation from the beginning, but that would mean it might be the end of August before I would finish 😳. #magicmountain

Lcsmcat You can save the first part the Wood for the next time you read it. 😀 I look forward to hearing your opinions on the different translations. 5y
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Glanced through it briefly, and there doesn‘t seem to be too much difference, so that‘s probably what I‘ll do. At least I can read all the pages now! 5y
Lcsmcat Oh good! I‘ve only got 2 more days of vacation so I‘m trying to get as far as I can. Mann is easier if I can read large chunks at a time. 5y

“Elevated discourse was beyond him; but within his limits he could talk very acceptably about the manufacture of galoshes.” Every now and then there‘s a sentence so funny I have to read it out loud! #magicmountain @SharonGoforth
