Any interest in a buddy read of this book? As a native North Carolinian I‘m ashamed to say I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m thinking something very informal, like #magicmountain and #myvodkabromance were, and starting in September? Give me a holler if you‘re interested.

Butterfinger I'm interested. 5mo
Butterfinger @Lcsmcat I ordered my book for September. 5mo
Lcsmcat Excellent! Let me know when it arrives. 5mo

Sorry, @SharonGoforth - but the pace picks up at the end and I stayed up way too late and finished. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I‘m going to hold off on my review until you finish, so no spoilers. 😀 #magicmountain

SharonGoforth It may take me awhile, so don‘t hold back on my account ☺️. Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on it! 6mo

@SharonGoforth I can‘t wait until you get to “Fullness of Harmony!” I have so many comments. 😀 (I don‘t know your musical background, but if you don‘t recognize the pieces he mentions and want to listen to them, let me know and I‘ll ID them for you.) #magicmountain

SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Thanks! You‘re way ahead of me . I‘m only at the point where Naphta has been introduced. I love classical music, so hopefully I‘ll be able to follow along☺️🎶. 6mo

Sometimes Mann comes out with something so good I have to read it out loud to whoever is in the room. #magicmountain @SharonGoforth

SharonGoforth I love Mann‘s writing. I‘m in chapter 6 now. So glad I have the all English translation, as the French dialogue between Hans Castorp and Frau Chauchat was incredible! 6mo
Lcsmcat It was! She‘s quite the character. I got so much reading done at the beach last week that I‘m about halfway through Chapter 7. I‘ll try not to post spoilers, but I can‘t stop reading. I also found an interesting article in the New Yorker about the place that inspired the novel. https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/to-the-magic-mountain 6mo

“...the genius of a silence so definite that it was less a negation than a refutation of speech.”

I love Mann‘s description of a cemetery. Beautiful.

Lcsmcat His prose is so powerful that he made me feel cold when he described the snow storm - and I was on the beach. 6mo
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat His prose is amazing. So glad we‘re reading this! 6mo
Lcsmcat Me too. I probably wouldn‘t have tried again on it if we weren‘t reading it together. 6mo

Lcsmcat How goes it? I‘m eager to hear what you think about the last two chapters! (They‘re so long I feel like he should have called them “books,” but he didn‘t.) 6mo
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I‘m afraid I‘m a bad buddy reader - I started 4 books this weekend and haven‘t finished MM yet. Plan is to get back to it today. 6mo
Lcsmcat @SharonGoforth I do that all the time! I‘ve got three buddy reads going right now not counting MM, plus another book on my Kindle. Just tag me when you post so I don‘t miss it. 6mo

Herr Settembrini is bad enough, but when Naphta starts pontificating (yes, I chose that word intentionally) I have to put the book down and stare at the ocean. #magicmountain @SharonGoforth

Woohoo! My all-English translation of The Magic Mountain is here! I also bought a commentary! Almost tempted to read the Woods translation from the beginning, but that would mean it might be the end of August before I would finish 😳. #magicmountain

Lcsmcat You can save the first part the Wood for the next time you read it. 😀 I look forward to hearing your opinions on the different translations. 6mo
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat Glanced through it briefly, and there doesn‘t seem to be too much difference, so that‘s probably what I‘ll do. At least I can read all the pages now! 6mo
Lcsmcat Oh good! I‘ve only got 2 more days of vacation so I‘m trying to get as far as I can. Mann is easier if I can read large chunks at a time. 6mo

“Elevated discourse was beyond him; but within his limits he could talk very acceptably about the manufacture of galoshes.” Every now and then there‘s a sentence so funny I have to read it out loud! #magicmountain @SharonGoforth
