38/100 I love books like this, written in 1977, envisioning the world of 2000, but looking back from 2025 and seeing how off the author's vision came to be. Sadly, no hovercars or helio-jets for the police, no Universal Credit Cards to replace money, no instant purchases delivered to your home by vaccum tube. It's still a fun read, although too short for any character development. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫 #Read2025

CSeydel I mean … we kind of have instant purchases with Amazon same day delivery. (Imagine how cumbersome a network of vacuum tubes all over the country would be! 🤣) And ApplePay or Venmo are kind of like “universal credit cards” 1w
Ruthiella Still no flying cars! 😂 1w
RamsFan1963 @CSeydel Yes those are close, but in the book, the Universal Credit Card is issued to everyone, so it's like a government supported welfare for everyone. If you had a job, you had more on your card, but even the unemployed got what was called Inalienable Basic, so no one went homeless or starved. They also had universal health care, another thing we can't seem to get right. 1w
CSeydel Oh yeah, that‘s a very different thing! 1w

Ah back to finishing my graphic novel series. In this volume, we learn more about Jayne's past and why he left his hometown and family. The crew of Serenity is in a bind to help monks that have been robbed and chaos ensues. Wonderful story and I even like the new characters. Good graphics as well.

Texreader There‘s a Firefly graphic novel series? I think I‘ve got a gift idea for the husband! He loves Firefly! 3w
booklover3258 @Texreader This one series of many Firefly graphic novels... plus there are awesome Firefly books as well with the characters on the covers. 3w

Displaying Ashton‘s signature humor, The Fourth Consort takes place in outer space in a sci-fi light comedy. A short and quick read. Enjoyable but I did wish for a little more substance.

Happy Publication Day! Staples‘ second novel is actually something of a sequel to THIS TOWN SLEEPS— which I wish I had known before diving into this one! I also wish that I had a physical copy instead… the audio performance is great, but with multiple narrators, dates to keep straight & some abrupt, fever dream feeling transitions, I would‘ve preferred being able to more easily flip pages back as needed for reference in this casino based Inferno.

Ashton‘s latest makes for a quick & fun listen! Dalton Greaves left a lonely life in WV to work for the Unity a space initiative run by a snail-like species looking for other intelligent beings. The book opens when they land on a planet with giant insect-like creatures at the same time as their space rivals, stick-bug like aliens. With humor & heart, this is a genuinely fun & well-performed listen! Can‘t wait for more from Ashton!

I did pretty well with my first month of #Roll100 in January—2 books completed and I‘m 2/3 through the third book. Hopefully that bodes well for February! Here are my books corresponding to the numbers.

The sequel to Cascade Failure was my favorite book of July. The crew of the Ambit is forced to work with their worst enemy to save the life of one of their family members.

The Alien Way | Gordon R. Dickson

Two books I bought today judged solely by their covers.

The Alien Way has a cover by my favourite sci fi artist, Bruce Pennington, so the contents are secondary, but for what it's worth, it's an alien invasion story which sounds like it could be pretty good.
A Book of the Sea beguiled me with that sailing ship, but the contents are not short stories, which I'd assumed, but extracts from longer works, which I tend not to like, but 🤷‍♂️

Leftcoastzen Great old covers ! 5mo
