My shower stall is usable!!! I've just christened it. ?
Now, it's just a few "nips and tugs" to hide the fact that there used to be a wall between the two parts of the bathroom and we're done. ?

I'm going to sit outside on this wonderfully warm autumn day to catch up with you while listening to Stephen Fry. Then some reading. ?

Sometimes it's the same names that come up again and again in books. Right now it's hyperchromia (different colour eyes) and chocolate making that come up in the books I'm reading.

Weird or serendipitous?

GingerAntics I‘ve heard you talk about this series, but somehow the first book isn‘t available in english in any of my apps. No idea how that works out. Apparently I‘m supposed to read the first in either Spanish or polish (or something like that) then read the second two in English. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Very frustrating. 6d
julesG @GingerAntics Unbelievable! I have ebook and physical copy and -rare for me- I recommend the physical copy. A lot of the beauty of this book gets lost in the ebook version. The full cast audiobook though that might be an option. 6d

julesG @Molly_the_mezzo From shaktimat.eu "It stimulates pressure points in the body to encourage natural healing. Today, the ShaktiMat provides millions worldwide with relief from backpain, muscle tension, sleep problems and stress. Just 20 minutes laying on a ShaktiMat‘s 6000 points produces endorphins, leaving the body feeling deeply relaxed." - it hurts a bit, yes, but it definitely relaxes and I often drift off for a few minutes 2w

I'm not really into this book. Have listened to nearly 1/3 by now, but could very well live without knowing the end.

Also, pondering what to do with a 1.3kg organic courgette.

Beholderess Courgette seems to be chilling there just fine 2w
Megabooks I so prefer courgette to zucchini! Way better word! That said, if you have a spiralizer, they make great noodles! 2w
julesG @Megabooks It's called zucchini in German, took me very long to get courgette stuck in my head 😉 - - zoodles, great idea. Don't have a spiralizer though, yet! 2w
See All 8 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have never heard of them called a courgette, it‘s zucchini or summer squash here! I slice mine in half longways, then chop into slices and sauté them with a some olive oil and garlic. 2w
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Courgette is British English, I think. Thanks for the recipe. Since it's a large vegetable, I'll probably be able to make more than one dish from it. 2w
ulrichyumiodd Courgette is also French, haha. Good luck with your new recipes! 2w
julesG @ulrichyumiodd It is indeed. Though I try to ignore the little bit of schoolroom French that I still remember, especially since I tend to pronounce French with an English accent nowadays. 🙊 2w

This book felt like eating a bar of passable chocolate late at night, good while it lasts but afterwards I regret staying up late with empty calories.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m just at the beginning of this one, I‘m a bit behind. 2w
See All 22 Comments
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm sure you'll catch up soon. 2w
Iblu I loved it. The way he portrays religion and the absurdities of some of them as they get interpreted by mankind. Surprised there was not a single female character. Loved Didaktylos (excuse my spelling, I listened to this book) and Forbes was a formidable character. The librarian from Unseen University making an appearance!!!! 2w
julesG @Iblu You've summed up my thoughts! Shame there wasn't any female character, apart from Brutha's mentioned grandmother. I would have liked to see Pratchett's take on a matriarchal religion. Does him omitting female characters/gods mean he didn't have anything sarcastic to say about them? 😁 I truly love how he described the absurdities of religion. Lu-Tze was cute, and it's the first book featuring him. PS: Vorbis and Didactylos 😉 2w
Iblu @julesG thanks for the spelling!! I‘m curious, is Lu-Tze a returning character then? I wonder whether the omission of references to matriarchal religion was a kind of admission of a difference and possibly perceived superiority? I‘m not equipped to really say they are better but maybe someone can shed a little light? 2w
julesG @Iblu Yup, Lu-Tze will return. But not sure in which book. He's like the librarian, shows up now and then. 2w
TheSpineView I felt like Pratchett was poking fun at the way humans try to quantify a God and not just poking at religion as a whole. 2w
khooliha It was very weird to revisit this book and see how much of the "taking on characteristics of the shape your inhabiting" rubbed off on the kind of story I like to tell. As for the book itself, I wish there was more to Brutha, I guess. 2w
DrexEdit I did enjoy this book and was doing all these “Ha!“ and “Too Right!“ and “snort!“ comments throughout. But, it seemed to me that Sir Terry bit off a bit too much to chew with this. He's taking on religion, philosophy, ethics, morality, and grandmothers! So I guess my take, on my first read through this, is that although all the story parts worked together, I still got the sense that it was 2 or 3 stories mashed together. Anybody else think that? 2w
julesG @DrexEdit Too Right! 😁 2w
Gezemice I am still working on it, but this is my second read. I read this before I read other Discworld books and I loved it. Revisiting, still so true, but I can appreciate the Pratchettian wit more. Those observations of religion are so astute. In this whole city devoted to a God there is only one true believer? 2w
Gezemice @Iblu Lu-Tze features prominently in Thief of Time. 2w
Gezemice @DrexEdit He always had 2-3 stories going. That‘s just how he operates. I personally enjoy the writing and characters the most - the stories are a hit or miss. 2w
gossamerchild This is absolutely one of my favorites. I feel bad I missed it on this go around, but I'll try to get back to it and actually comment something other than the same thing I always comment :-D 2w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Finally finished! It took me a bit to sink into this one, but I loved it. I was still waiting for the lion to show up at the ending though! 1w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice That was one of the best observances about religion I thought, a whole city based on a faith, but only one true believer....the rest all going along so they could use the religion to justify whatever they wanted. Sad, but another one of those sadly very true things. 1w
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah, Pratchett is so good at pointing out the corruption of system, but he does it on a nice, kind way - somehow he is always like, well, that‘s just how things are, and perfectly normal people can do perfectly evil things. Like when the inquisitors all have mugs like “world‘s best dad” and they take up a collection when someone retires. 1w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yes! That was another great bit! 1w

Self-care Monday: Got my hair cut even shorter. BFC is showing signs, or better, collarbones and cheek bones. The hair dresser said, shorter would look good on me, so I braved it. I love it!

1) buddy read with my son, he's way ahead of me
2) no long weekend here in 🇩🇪 - my father will try to get the bathroom works closer to finish, want to go to the market at closing time 😉, and reading
3) chocolate
4) learned a few but was only mediocre and haven't played any in ages: guitar, recorder, flute
5) on it

jenniferw88 Thanks for your comment on the squirrel book - I went back and bought it so have removed the post so helen doesn't see it! 3w

julesG @jenniferw88 PS: I also stumbled across something for her, but it's not that book. 😁 3w
jenniferw88 @julesG I've sent her a LOT of squirrel-related things for her birthday - in fact the only thing that isn't about squirrels is the book! 😂😂😂 3w
julesG @jenniferw88 It's just so funny when I stumble on something and know exactly which Litten this is for. 😁 I might still send a little parcel, hoping it'll arrive in time and not going to the wrong address as with Rachel's parcel (totally my fault). 3w

A worthy end for this series. Not a single boring scene. The characters grew up, evolved. I've highlighted several passages, but wanted to share the page that made me need another tissue. It's all over now. I will visit the characters again, probably with at least one of my kids.

I don't want to give away anything about the plot. Those who've read the series will not be disappointed.

It's nearly over. I don't want it to end. Probably the reason why I'm chatting, texting, checking Litsy and Gmail instead of finishing the book.

Moony It's a long time ago that I read such a good book. My actual readinglist is so boring and exhausting. 😑 Enjoy your last hour! And perhaps you can read it twice 😉 3w
julesG @Moony I'll probably read the whole series in German with one of the kids. Sooner, rather than later. 3w

Dear @Sarah83, I give up.

The story gets slightly interesting at around page 100, when Campbell enters the stage. Knowing the outcome from Conan Doyle's own story, I'm absolutely not willing to plough on through this book.

I do not understand why it got so many raving reviews. The writing is convoluted with hypotaxis. There's too much boring, unimportant information.

Just look at the cover, it tells me more about the author and his past glory👇

julesG ...than about the contents of the book. 😠 There are at least 20 snippets from positive reviews on the cover and fly leaves. But not a single, really good blurb. I'm not going to pick up another book by this author. 4w
CaroPi Have you read something he wrote before? I totally love his short stories in "a brief history of the world in 10 1/2 chapters" one of the few books I re read. I also found out very interesting "the sense of an ending". But this second one I like after I finished and tought about it. 4w
julesG @CaroPi The short stories were good, you are right. But this book was definitely riding on past glory. 4w

CaroPi Well I truly believe that all prolific authors have their good and bad moments. I also like John Boyne but he has his good and bad moments 4w

Look what arrived today! It's the book I bought from the gift card I won during the #24in48 #readathon.

Huge Thank You to the ladies at @24in48!!!

Now I need to show a lot of restraint. Must. Not. Start. This. One. Yet. I'm buddy reading three other books atm and I'm lagging behind - especially with the book I'm reading w/ my son. He's likely to spoil the best scenes before I get to them.

Megabooks It‘s fantastic! You‘ll really enjoy it, I think! 4w

Slow morning, so far. I'm determined to go swimming at 10 am, when the pool opens.

Read "Arthur and George" in bed this morning, very slow read. I could do with half the unnecessary information.

Now I'm diving further into the tagged book. I cannot restrict myself to #TheGreatLibraryChapterADay. #ARC #NetGalley

Okay week. I thought it was slow, but it wasn't.

Went swimming on Friday and Saturday - got stung by a wasp yesterday that cut the visit to the swimming pool short. Did a bit of yoga. Read books, but I guess I started more than I finished.

Moony Oh what a crazy week. You got stung by a wasp? I hope you're ok! I didn't finish any book but get some new... my bookshelf is full full full.... I wish you a great weekend! 1mo

julesG @Moony Yep. At the swimming pool. Was handing something to my daughter and chasing away a wasp near her thigh, took my arm back and got stung in the armpit. Must have been an old wasp, stinger and behind got stuck. I could pull it out. Might have not got a lot of poison into my skin. Anyway, quick thinking saved the day. Asked a smoker for his lighter, made my house key hot (well, overly warm, wasp poison is protein that denaturates at 50°C) and👇 1mo
julesG Pressed it onto the sting. Burnt like hell but probably did the trick. Only mild swelling and a bit of red skin this morning. No allergic reaction, but it might have been my first wasp sting ever. 1mo
CocoReads Yuck about the wasp, glad you didn‘t have a reaction. 1mo
britt_brooke Ouch! Sounds like a good week otherwise. (edited) 1mo
CaroPi Glad that you didn't got an allergic reaction 1mo

#24B4Monday #readathon @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65 @jb72

We are kind of readathoning. My little reader is finishing the tagged book. I'm intending to finish Cogheart.

The poster with 100 favourite books was a present from one of the major book store chains. I can tick the books I've read. Not sure I can draw a parachute next to the ones I bailed though.

jb72 Very cool 😎 1mo

Sarah83 Kommt noch mit den Kapiteln. Die sind sehr lang. 😉 Ja, ich liebe Bücher mit Schachtelsätzen. 1mo
Sarah83 Ok 😊 1mo
