It's here at last!!!!

Pre-ordered and had to wait for ages, it was published in July.

Jari-chan Uh, that looks promising! 😍 4d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Wow, your bookshop really isn‘t doing well with the preorders… (have you tried Blackwells?) 4d
julesG @thegirlwiththelibrarybag no, and I'm not the only one complaining about it. I have two more pre-orders from that particular (large chain of bookshops) one is Katabasis (sprayed edges edition), the other is the next Travis Baldree (also special edition). I'm considering pre-ordering from Blackwells in future. It might not arrive on publishing day but probably within 5-10 business days. 3d
See All 6 Comments
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, which is almost instantaneous in comparison 😅 did they offer any explanation for the delay? 3d
julesG @thegirlwiththelibrarybag The standard reply in these cases is something along the lines of "the publisher is at fault they don't/won't/can't deliver the item at the moment". I'll just have to use Blackwells or find a reliable independent bookshop near me. 3d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, the only issue I‘ve had with Blackwells (isn‘t really an issue tbh) was when they refunded a preorder because the publication date changed (I don‘t think the book is coming out tbh, but this in no way stopped me from preordering it a second time). So at least they are proactive about it, there was no moment of limbo. 3d

This was not even close to Lights Out.

Flat characters, disjointed story, yet lots of sometimes well-crafted spice.

It read as if the author had some spicy scenes and added a story to connect them.

A Steeping of Blood is the second book in the Blood and Tea duology by Hafsah Faizal. I enjoyed the first book and was happy to receive an early audiobook review copy of the second book. I'm trying to keep this review as spoiler free as possible for anyone who hasn't read the books yet.

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

Already published

Low pick

⬇️

julesG The story picks up shortly after the events at the end of the first book. The topics are rather dark (colonialism, racism), yet the writing is more juvenile than I expected for such dark topics. There is a lot of quippy banter between the characters, a lot of planning things, lots of action scenes, but in the end there are not as many accomplishments as I expected.

A satisfying, if not great, ending to the duology.

Two Gothic novelists with peculiar similarities in their works both decide, independently of each other, to visit a partially collapsed Gothic manor house for inspiration (and also to make sure the other can't steal any ideas). Their pasts and the house's past might nudge them together.

Sapphic Gothic romance - rivals-to-lovers, there are two beds(!), there are a lot of ghosts of the past

City of Stairs (🎧) - it's been on #MountTBR for ages

Ladies in Hating (ARC) - two Gothic novellists w/ a past, w/ current beef, but also w/ chemistry, sapphic 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Martin, an octogenarian, is convalescing from hip replacement surgery at the local retirement home. He's convinced he used to work as a spy for the British government and is determined to use his skills to solve the murder of another resident of the home. Albie, Martin's next door neighbour, is reluctant to be roped into the operation, he thinks Martin is loosing his marbles, ⬇️

julesG but soon enjoys their clandestine outings. Dionne, Martin's daughter and a member of the local police force, on the other hand not only fears her father is suffering from dementia, but also that he's falsely accusing people of murder; after all, it's a retirement home and people do die in such homes.

⬇️
3w
julesG I enjoyed the cosy mystery with lots of humour, despite first thinking it was close to some aspects of Thursday Murder Club. Yet Martin's POV, which might or might not be a bit unreliable given his age and memory, made it hard to put down. I wanted to know what he and Albie got up to next. 3w

The Shepherd's Crown | Terry Pratchett
post image

From today's Discworld Emporium's Newsletter:

THE SHEPHERD'S CROWN TURNED 10!
The final Discworld book is now a decade old. All these years later, the understandable reluctance to read it can be felt as strongly now as it did that dreadful year when Terry died, and the Shepherd's Crown was published. For many fans it has remained an unread treasure in order to hold back the end and keep the turtle moving.⬇️

#Discworld #OokBOokClub

julesG With that in mind, Rob Wilkins had a few words to mark the anniversary and encourage the bravery required to finish the final chapter . . .⬇️ 3w
julesG "It‘s been ten years since the publication of The Shepherd‘s Crown, the last book Terry Pratchett completed before he died. Once the spine on this one was cracked, there were no more new Pratchetts to look forward to, and I know a lot of Discworld readers who were, understandably, with that sad reality in mind, reluctant to finish - or even start - this one because it felt like the final closing of a door.⬇️ 3w
julesG But I also know that Terry wanted his books to be read and enjoyed far more than he wanted them kept on a shelf. And as time passes it becomes ever more apparent how much the Discworld books reward re-visiting, perpetually revealing something new, literary gems Terry had hidden away for a second or third, or even more, re-read. Every Pratchett is to some degree an unread Pratchett, including the ones you‘ve already enjoyed and including ⬇️ 3w
See All 9 Comments
julesG The Shepherd‘s Crown.
So the greatest way to honour Terry‘s legacy is to pull that book you‘ve been saving off the shelf, make a nice cup of tea and settle down to read the story he wrote for you. Enjoy."

Sorry Ms Jackson, but this was utter rubbish!! Especially for your adult mystery debut.

Flat characters, repetitive, and I knew I should have bailed the moment the doctors let the main character leave the hospital about 36 hours after a massive brain injury and emergency brain surgery with "change the bandages daily".

#audiobook narration didn't help the book either. But at 2.5x it was over quickly.

kwmg40 This story felt pretty dark for a Discworld novel, even if it did contain some very funny scenes. Two aspects that I liked very much: the continuing character development of Vimes and the hilarious and intriguing Dis-organiser. 1mo
See All 7 Comments
julesG @kwmg40 The Dis-Organiser was hilarious indeed. 1mo
julesG Yes, the novel was darker than what we've seen so far, but it can't all be sunshine and rainbows. Not even on Discworld. I think Pratchett used the Watch novels deliberately to show the darker side of life. 1mo
willaful I think this was one of his more ambitious books and it's not entirely successful. But it's full of fantastic gut-punch scenes, as well as laughs. 1mo
julesG @willaful There's a lot packed into the story. This time round I noticed a lot of small things connected to history (wars, border disputes, fishing rights squabbles,...) that I didn't notice upon my first read or didn't know about back then, which make more sense to me and made the novel feel less 'unsuccessfully ambitious'. 1mo

Read and reviewed in July #NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

Eleanor and the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel are back on English soil, but that doesn't mean their fight is over. On the contrary, the vampires are conspiring again and are trying to take down the League one member at a time, it seems. Eleanor's mission, given to her by Anima, leads her to uncover a centuries old secret that could mean an end to the vampires influencing humans.
⬇️

julesG Eleanor feels torn between the many directions to follow: Anima wants her to uncover the secret, the League needs her, the French Revolution would like to use her as an asset, she wants to be with Charles, she wants to learn more about (her) magic, but she also just wants to make dresses with lovely embroidery. Add the class divide that Eleanor finds insurmountable but everyone else seems to have long forgotten about and accepted her ⬇️ 1mo
julesG as one of their own and you have a cauldron of inner turmoil about to bubble over. Yet it never does. I wanted Eleanor to challenge her position and not just accept it and please everyone around her. I wanted her to be egoistic for once.

All in all it is a reasonably good ending to the trilogy. I just wish a few more questions about Eleanor's magic had been answered. Maybe we'll get a novella set after the end of this book at some point?

Alchemy and a Cup of Tea | Rebecca Thorne

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

Fourth and last book in the Tomes and Tea series.

Dedication made me chuckle.

Published: 12 August 2025

This last book wraps up the series nicely, but I'm still sad this is the last book. I hope we get some spin-offs or novellas set in this universe in the future.

⬇️

julesG Picking up where the last book ended, Reyna is kidnapped. But Reyna being Reyna, she isn't very fazed about it. The only thing that irks her is that there is a strange alchemical circle under her cell. This needs investigating and leads Kianthe and Reyna to the Magicary, which leads them to rogue alchemists, which leads them to... Ha, no, not going to spoil it.

julesG Meanwhile Tawney is swarmed with tourists hoping to visit New Leaf and get a glimpse of the Arcandor and her wife the Queen. The townsfolk isn't happy with the influx of tourists and the tourists aren't happy with how the town handles the situation. It might mean the end of New Leaf and relocation for Kianthe and Reyna. 2mo

My son bought Murderbot prints from Tommy Arnold https://www.tommyarnoldart.com/ and I just totally unprofessionally framed them.
