Cozy Sci-fi Murder Mystery set on a sentient space station

Second book in the Midsolar Murders series.

The station is acting up. Mallory's connection to the Sundry hivemind is on the fritz. There are visitors from Earth, some of whom are from Mallory's past. And, of course, another murder occurs; and all visiting humans have a motive.

I'm so glad I got the #audiobook! Will Watts was great narrating this accent heavy book with a Scouse MC and 90% secondary characters from Sheffield.

Solid, Alexis Hall M/M #Romance/#RomCom.

Sam is the branch manager of a bed&bathroom store in Sheffield. He has to come to the Croydon branch to meet with the boss. Sam has an accident in the shower stall department and has to stay with his boss Jonathan because of concussion and maybe amnesia. ⬇️

julesG Set at Christmas. Grump-Sunshine/Enemies-to-Lovers romance. There's also an 'adorable' rescue cat. 3d

1+2) Yes and no. The 'decoration-gene' passed me by. I'm not very skilled and keep the decorations down to fairy lights, a few pine cones here and there, a mini metal tree (cats!) and candles that are either battery operated or in jars/lanterns. I guess it's more Hygge than 🎄

3) can't think of one. Guess I'm more of a Grinch. 😬

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Are the rumours about David Hasselhoff‘s popularity in Germany true? Because he has a Christmas album 😜 (Mum told me in passing once that Nana thought he was fit during his Baywatch years so I just had to get her the CD for Christmas. She wasn‘t impressed, but as far as gag gifts go - it was a winner) 5d
Eggs Hygge is great 👍🏼 🤗👌🏼 5d
julesG @thegirlwiththelibrarybag He used to be big in the 90s, his music was everywhere. I think his 'Looking for Freedom" was one of the songs playing around the time of the Berlin Wall falling, became sort of an anthem. He also has family ties to Germany. And before you think I'm a fan, nope. I had a student (adult education, English as a 2nd language), about 20 years ago, who was a fan and used every opportunity to tell the class about him. 5d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, I think he played it on the wall? I remember him popping up in Dodgeball as the German coach 🤣 aww, I love a passionate fan who will take every opportunity to info dump - I had a friend in high school who adored the boy group Blue (they had a couple of big songs before fading away into obscurity) - same vibes as your student! 5d

Finished this cowl while listening to the tagged #audiobook.

It reminded me a lot of two three other #RomCom books I've read this year. So what stood out where the inconsistencies of the MC's character and the cringe-worthy "sex ed" lessons.

I liked the author's other two books, but this one was more: "oh, I've read that in XYZ before" & "Lady, if you're not hung up on it, why do you think about it all day?"

London, the late 1920s.

Agnes has rooms to let and three possible lodgers to choose from. How will life at No 23 change when she decides to give the rooms to her niece Clara? Or to the banker Mr Thompson? Or the young widow Mrs Mayweather?

Each possibility is explored. Each unveils some of the secrets of the new lodger as well as the secrets of the people already living in the house. Which timeline might have the best outcome for all? ⬇️

julesG Soft pick, because it dragged on a bit in the middle. Also, some of the repetitive use of possibly contemporary language got on my nerves ("old girl" or "darling") and some characters just weren't my cup of tea. 2w

Another #NetGalley #ARC off the #MountARC backlog.

A Christmas-y romance novel that is set mostly in Miami and Columbia. A collaboration for a song brings Cara and Javi together. Both have baggage, of course, which leads to some drama and an eventual HEA.

I didn't care much for either MC. What was interesting though was the insights into the music industry and how Christmas is celebrated in Latin American countries.

Grump-Sunshine or even Enemies-to-Lovers sounded good, but this book missed the mark by legions.

Poppy, a matchmaker for a very exclusive agency has to try and find a wife for Tristan, who needs to be married within the next month. So far it sounded plausible. ⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

julesG Tristan is an investment banker and doesn't really need the inheritance to keep up his minimalist workaholic lifestyle . Why does he insist on finding a wife then? And Poppy, a trained psychologist, has nothing better to do than trying to match her latest client with a woman who isn't satisfied with her current husband's bedroom performance? ⬇️ 1mo
julesG The two main characters don't have enough depth for me and some of there backstory just doesn't make sense to me; how can an investment banker who works up to seventy hours a week take off for three days without any kind of thought at how this impacts his work performance? Furthermore, there is no chemistry between Tristan and Poppy - at least there wasn't any up to 42% when I bailed on the book. ⬇️ 1mo
julesG It's hard to believe that the two of them hit it off in the second half of the book. The idea behind the book is good, but the execution left me baffled. ⬇️ 1mo
julesG Based on the ARC: That sexually frustrated wife mentioned above is Italian, but uses 'Google translate' Italian phrases to spice up her speech. It's a no-go for me. If the author doesn't speak the foreign language, they should get a native speaker to make it sound authentic. Which I hope was rectified before the book went to press.⏹️ 1mo

Inspired by #LittensLoveRomance I pulled out my copy of the tagged book. @StayCurious - unfortunately I didn't get tagged for this book.

It was good. I liked the MC and her family. I wouldn't mind diving back into this universe to read the stories of the secondary characters.

Strangely it has the same bare bones as a 120k story I wrote about a decade ago on a dare (see comments if you're interested).

julesG A good decade ago, I caved and read the 50 Shades trilogy and then the Twilight series. My friends had worn me down. I didn't particularly like either series and might have boasted that I could do better. So my friends asked me to prove it. We agreed on a short story, but my word-vomiting created a 120.000 words document within three weeks. I sent it off to my friends.... 1mo
julesG My friends are casual readers and the feedback I got was positive, but not exactly productive. Yes, I had proofed that I could write a contemporary romance story that had some magical/fantastical elements and spicy scenes, but my friends' "unprofessional" feedback made me put my draft on ice before I had finished my first edit of it. ... 1mo
julesG When I eventually picked the draft back up, put it onto my new laptop and took it on a holiday to London with me, my laptop was stolen on my third day of my writing holiday. I saw it as further proof that the story wasn't supposed to see the light of day. Since then it's been slumbering on two different hard drives and one cloud and I haven't had the courage to open it up again. 1mo

I thought this was going to be a witchy #Romance. It was more spicy chick-lit, though. With a dash of time travel (to the Great Fire of London) and witch politics.

The FMC, Poppy, was supposed to be quirky but felt random to me.

The man-bun wearing MMC, Alex, seemed to pile on backstory the further we got into this.

The saving grace, in my opinion, was Iris, Poppy's landlady, who managed to bury several husbands.

Found my copy, @Caroline2!!! It was not where I thought I'd left it. Double stacking books can be a curse sometimes. 🙄🙄🙄 It's in a prime position now.

We could make it a part of #NonFictionNovember.

julesG @Matteogeorge I double stack most books. I don't think I have any on quantum mechanics, but I have a shelf with (physical) chemistry books. 1mo
Caroline2 Whey!!! 😁 👏 let‘s hope it‘s good…!! 1mo

A palate cleanser #RomCom.

Third book in the series. Very slow burn romance, the two MCs knew each other from childhood, but it took them 19 years and a nearly fatal accident to finally find each other. But still it's not easy for the two of them to be together. There's a curse on each of them. There's a teenager who doesn't want another step-parent. There are younger brothers with an opinion. 🙄

julesG Do we have the #PalateCleanser already? Or #AudioSorbet? We should use them. Would make finding a "palate cleanser" easier. 1mo

It dragged a bit in the middle, but I really liked Grace's pilgrimage through London and her memories.

And I'm out. I wanted to like it, despite the rather basic style of writing (reads like a script was turned into prose), but I cannot deal with the historical inaccuracies.

I've checked twice, the book is set in 1579+ with flashbacks to 1560s (childhood and early slave years of the protagonist), it reads like set in the late 18th century.

Caroline2 Argh! I hate that! 😒 some writers just really struggle to correctly capture an era don‘t they. 1mo

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

I should be reading the already published #ARCs
📚 Hex and the City
📚 Saevus Corax Deals with the Dead

I'm also listening to
🎧 The African Samurai

To borrow from @CSeydel - But what I'm actually doing right now is watching the 13th series of Doctor Who and knitting.

I love the cover. I liked the book. Would have liked to see more of Luna, but it was an 'Alex needs to work on his character arch and chess pieces need to be moved in position' story. So, Alex joins the Keepers as an auxiliary trying to outsmart Richard's behind the scenes moves.

Just a few pages, but great.

Murderbot before All Systems Red. Murderbot hates planets, hates interacting with humans, just wants to watch Media. Unfortunately the humans around Murderbot might start killing each other any minute now.
