Is it really so difficult to look up the pronunciation of a word/name, dear #audiobook narrator?

It's not "Chai-Chester"!

?

I'm not tagging the book, because I'm actually enjoying it. This mispronunciation though was like nails on a chalkboard.

Merethebookgal I listened to an audiobook last year where the narrator pronounced “hearth” as “her-th.”Hearths were prominent in the story so it was like nails on the chalkboard every time. They must‘ve gotten a lot of complaints, because in the sequel, the narrator pronounced hearth correctly 😂 17h
MemoirsForMe Oh my! 😬 15h
julesG @Merethebookgal 🙄🙄🙄 maybe they thought it needed to sound extra fancy. 15h
ImperfectCJ Place names are the worst. I listened to an audiobook set in Massachusetts a while back, and the mispronunciations of town names was 😬 Indie audiobooks I get since those are usually just the author/rights holder and the narrator, and the narrator does all the editing/producing. But with books where there's a whole crew to listen and catch mistakes, it's a little more annoying. Like with copy editing mistakes in publisher vs indie titles. 11h

Went to the bookshop while waiting for my daughter to finish her theatre project.

In the English books section was a shelf labeled "Romantasy" but the top shelves contained Sci-fi novels in German. ? I only noticed when Three Body Problem, Mickey 7, and 1984 caught my eye (sorry bad photo quality).

I must have looked lost or very baffled, because one of the staff came over asking how she might help and I pointed it out to her.

I liked the illustrations - and by that the second part of the book, with the compendium of animal-human-hybrids - far more than the biography part/story of the book.

Quite liked this. Yes, there are some issues and I'm not talking about the stalking, because that's literally in the title of the novel. I was more frustrated with Izzy being a doormat in her relationship with Evan. Girl, everyone and your grandmother is telling you he's an idiot and you still don't dump him? BookmarkTavern Listening to these City Watch books right after each other is so fascinating! Seeing Vimes‘s growth, his strength in his family is so rewarding. But it also makes me wonder. Would a Nightwatch or a Guards! Guards! Vimes have had a similar defense against the Summoning Dark, or would he have fallen? (edited) 2w
julesG @BookmarkTavern I agree, it's fascinating seeing his growth. Not sure about how successful an early Vimes would have been. I hope he'd have had it in him back then already. (does that make sense? ) 2w
See All 6 Comments
BookmarkTavern Yes! I think the foundations are there. And maybe he wouldn‘t have given in completely. But I think that his reliance on the Watch, like Carrot and Angua and Cherry, his relationship with Sybil and Sam, even his dealings with Vetinari are what gave his Guarding Dark the strength to shut out the Summoning completely. 2w
willaful @BookmarkTavern Very interesting point. He's tested a lot throughout the books -- staying sober, holding on to hope in Night Watch, and now this. He always comes out stronger and a little more able to connect to his people. 2w

It's the 1930s, Georgie has solved three murders that happened in the small village in the Cotswolds. Quite a lot of murders for this small village. When another member of the community dies a seemingly natural death, Georgie writes to a famous London detective for his help. Chimney - locked room mystery

True crime podcaster Liza and her corporate financier wife Hanna want to spend Easter in a luxury hotel in the Scottish Highlands. Hanna planned it to rescue their marriage. It soon turns into a Murder Mystery Weekend with real victims.

Very Christie-esque, with chapter headings reminiscent of Cluedo.

RaeLovesToRead This looks cute! 1mo

Six down on their luck mystery adjacent people are invited to the small village of Midwinter to compete in a fictional murder mystery game organised by the Midwinter Trust. Then two actual murders happen.

I read an excerpt late last year which made this sound like a locked room murder mystery homage to the Golden Age Mysteries where the reader is encouraged to guess the clues together with the amateur sleuths.
⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

julesG The novel was a slog through a lot of repetitive backstory with characters that aren't developed much past their cliché descriptions "failed author," "literary agent involved in scandal," "token American barkeep". The clues weren't very difficult to work out and there is a handy solutions guide at the back.

The final nail in the coffin was the deus ex machina twist to make the ending seem plausible. ??

willaful I can't remember if I read this one before, which makes me think I must not have, though it might not have made such a strong impression when I was younger. I think this is one of his best books.

I loved the symbolism of the case. Vimes is so resistant to the trappings that came with marriage to Sybil that it was good to see one he truly loved, that represents how much she cares for him, and becomes a lifeline.
1mo
willaful And I loved his recognition and acceptance of the fact that it's time to let himself be more than a copper. He has to be a husband and father too. 1mo
BookmarkTavern @willaful I loved that too! His constant little reminders of what he was missing. Sybil and Sam is my favorite romantic couples Pratchett wrote. 1mo

Compared to the first book in the Bristol Keats duology, this was a slow read. The main plot had so many points of view that it felt like it was moving at a snail's pace. In addition, the romance plot leaned very heavily into the miscommunication trope. In the final 20%, though, all the action happened.

⬇️

julesG The last two chapters and the epilogue OF THE ARC -the ending of the published book might be different- didn't make sense in regard to how the time went by in Elphame and the real world. It's mentioned several times throughout both books that a few weeks in Elphame can equal years in the real world, but suddenly both 'realms' run on the same time? 2mo

Tiffenie is a 300-year old vampire living a rather reclusive life in LA. She has hardly any connections outside of work at an all-night plasma centre other than her neighbour Heaven and her ex Vlad, who's still texting her every day. But Halloween brings an offer of change to Tiffenie's un-life; the woman whose identity she took on ten years ago inherited an inn in Vermont.

⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

julesG Tiffenie knows this is her chance to live her very own Hallmark movie life, she packs her bags, her cat and her neighbour Heaven and leaves the big city behind.

Of course it's not easy relocating to a small rural town, especially when everyone in town knew the woman Tiffenie is pretending to be. It's even worse when you're a creature of the night and you've moved to a town that's basically boarded up after sundown. It's even worse ⬇️
2mo
julesG worse when Vlad invites himself to stay and keep an eye on Tiffenie and Heaven. How's Tiffenie going to find her HEA with a rugged small town man under these circumstances?

I really liked the play on romance tropes, the glimpses into Tiffenie's past, and that the current relationships she was making and maintaining were more important than the backstory of her centuries old relationship with Vlad.

Sunrise plus a pre-ordered ebook that just dropped and a short story in the newsletter.

The irony, I'm off to see my ophthalmologist and I won't be able to read for half the day. 😬
Edited: appointment went better than expected and I can read all day 🥳

But, fortunately, I was just approved for an audiobook ARC. 😁

When you have loads of apples and a handful of frozen berries, you have to make at least a small crumble. Right?

Pairing it with #OokBOokClub read

I love this series, it has strong "The Mummy" and "Romancing the Stone" vibes. The first book is on offer right now "0.99 in USD, CAD, EUR, AUD, and NZD".

Gissy Beautiful cover😍 2mo
julesG @Gissy and it's not even the special edition with sprayed edges. We should ask @Caroline2 to take a picture of the spredges 😉 2mo
julesG @TheBookHippie it probably is. I still haven't read all the stories in the other two collections in the 'series' 2mo
