This weekend I'm reading Heather Houser's "Ecosickness in Contemporary U.S Fiction," which examines affect as a method through which "ecosickness fiction" raises environmental concern. The suggestion that emotion can move people from empirical knowledge to action is a particularly gratifying one as a humanities student! #ecocriticism #study #research #englishstudent

Hugely entertaining and accessible. My current read employs interviews with a range of academics from fields such as philosophy, social psychology, and cognitive science to explore the question of morality. Supported by podcasts, discussion questions, and suggestions for further reading, this is excellent both as an undergraduate resource, and as an introduction to the topic for the general interest reader. #philosophy #morality

Hottentot Venus: A Novel | Barbara Chase-Riboud

Preparing for a challenging reading experience with this novelisation of the life of Sara Baartman, the Khoikhoi woman who was exhibited as a freak show attraction in C19th Europe. Baartman eventually became a point of scientific interest for Georges Cuvier, who sought to study her as an example of the "missing link" in human evolution. Her mistreatment continued even after death, when a cast of her body went on display alongside her skeleton.
