That was so fun! I sometimes struggle with book club choices. I get grumpy that I‘m not making progress on my TBR pile(s). But I really enjoyed this one. A little slow in the middle, but ultimately a really fun ride.

Clwojick I‘m happy to hear this! I see this boom at the thrift store all the time, and I‘ve been interested, but have yet to pick it up. 1w

Couple things about this photo : notice the craft eye stuck to my 3 year old‘s foot. Secondly, I‘ve been having a lot of conversations lately about the idea of opening my own bookstore; talking about the good that a well run bookshop can bring to a community. Watching my kids play bookstore this morning has reminded me that they‘re watching and listening. I‘ve got to live my best life and hope they‘ll see me and do the same.

A very dark Dickensian sort of mystery where science and myths are at odds and our detective is aided by a ghost. I loved it. So so much. Perfect for this time of year, except it doesn‘t come out in the states until February. 😭

There seems to be a trend towards poetic memoirs lately. This reminded me a bit of On Earth We‘re Briefly Gorgeous, by Ocean Vuong - only a little less dark. Similar themes of family trauma and displacement. I loved this book so much. I can‘t wait to hand sell the hell out of it at work when it comes out in January.

A solid thriller. Not a lot of plot twists - it‘s pretty clear where the narrative is headed from the beginning, it‘s only a matter of how she gets there. The audio was a little hard to listen to at times because of the violence. TBH I usually skim violence in books and couldn‘t do that with the audio. The writing was great, the characters flawed and interesting. I love shifts in perspective.

alanacristin I feel the same about audiobook thrillers! I've had to stop listening occasionally and switch to an ebook format 😅 1mo

One of my favorite books so far this year. I‘m having the hardest time articulating why. I think it‘s the powerful stream of consciousness writing, the voice of the main character, the deep empathy with which this book approaches mental illness. And it‘s funny. I laughed out loud multiple times. I‘m so sad that it‘s over.

My third book by Ramona Ausubel. Her writing is so solid. This book wasn‘t as polished as her first. The pacing was difficult at times. The characters a little thin. But I liked it a lot. The themes - family, wealth, guilt - were expertly handled. The whole ride was made more meaningful by the ending.

I had almost a physical reaction to a couple of moments in this book. It‘s incredibly powerful, timely, moving. The author interviews the man who raped her when they were 19. They had been close friends before it happened. I‘ll be honest, I usually avoid books like this because I often feel like I don‘t have the capacity to face that kind of darkness. But after all these new abortion laws were passed, I was pissed and got brave. I‘m glad I did.
