Graphic and violent book. I finished but my book club bailed. Anyone else that read this - I'd love to hear your thoughts on the significance of the bear throughout the book.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Loved this book. The bear! Was it some kind of symbol for the main character? He was the bear? And then when he finally escaped he just also walked away from the bear in the cage? Im getting way existential here. Thoughts? 8y
Colleen1 Well first the bear is mentioned in the beginning, stuffed in a house, then they catch the bear cub and kill the mother, then they let the bear go, then later he kills a bear and shelters inside it, then later he sees the bear and I think it's the same one they let go, so seems like it's important 8y
Colleen1 @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com those are great thoughts! I really feel it is quite symbolic 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled It must be symbolic - not sure of what, but it's something! 8y

Thought provoking and riveting. A book that was emotionally hard to read but impossible to put down.

Wow! This was a difficult book to read. So tragic. I was blown away by the beautiful writing that made the most horrific events seem like poetry. What a talented writer.

I really enjoyed this book! I read the iPad beneath the ink version which had a great interactive feature that enhanced the story. I'd never read this classic and enjoyed our book club discussion- wow has the writing style and language changed since then.

I liked the book but it wasn't a page turner! Our book club had an okay discussion but agreed we needed more character development and a tighter plot.
