Glass Sword was one of the better "middle" books of a series I've read in a long time. The plot wasn't just stalling time until it could set up the climax for the 3rd book. Characters developed in unexpected ways, keeping them unpredictable and interesting. My only criticism is the end of ever chapter was always DRAMATIC, which could be exhausting.
