Just finished Chapter 2. I feel like this could have really helped me 10 years ago when I was trying to “save” a doomed marriage to someone who refused to put in any work himself...and to decide to leave the church that ostracized me for having the audacity to get a divorce a lot sooner.😬 Now I will use these tips to manage family and career goals. Really liked the planful problem solving vs. reappraisal b/c some things we really CAN‘T control.

lele1432 Also...that domestic argument Julie recounted was so true to life! And I‘m pretty sure the example of the 20min trip to the mall taking 40min and then running into an accident on the highway was actually based on our soul-sucking Houston traffic jams lol.😬 5d
Chrissyreadit ❤️❤️❤️❤️good for you for making hard choices! I agree- I wish I had this tool from the day I began my grown up life. 5d

SilverButtonBooks 👏🏻for you! It‘s hard enough to go through a divorce but to also incur judgement??? 👏🏻👏🏻 I can‘t imagine how difficult that just have been... 4d
lele1432 @SilverButtonBooks thank you!! And yes, they were of the belief that if you weren‘t beaten black and blue or consistently cheated on you had no grounds for divorce. And even in those cases they didn‘t “approve,” they just said you need to “get to a safe place” if being beaten, and “work it out” if being cheated on. A group of us left and later came to the realization that church was essentially a cult.😬 4d
Blaire @lele1432 I am so glad you got out of that situation. That must have taken a great deal of strength. I also really liked these charts - very practical way to distill goals. 2d

Some of my favorite quotes from the last couple of days of reading. Lee Jordan's commentary at the first Quidditch game, "After that obvious and disgusting bit of cheating..." (How I sometimes feel about the Patriots!?lol.) And this gem from Dumbledore! Gotta remind myself while I dwell on dreams not to forget to live! #PotterADay

Starting some much needed nighttime reading after a not-so-great day at work, AND a call from daycare saying my 1 yr old fell off their climbing mat and hit her head. 😞 (She seems to be doing fine! But the knot looked scary.)

Anywho, I was feeling adventurous, so my accompaniment this evening is a Greek dessert wine that, oddly enough, smells of orange vodka Jell-O shots! 😆 I'm scared to take a sip! 😆

Tanisha_A Oh no, your little one. Take care! ❤️ 7d
vivastory Sorry about the scare with your little one!! What's the verdict on the drink? 7d
Megabooks So sorry about her fall. Glad everything is fine! 7d

lele1432 @Tanisha_A @vivastory @Megabooks @RachelO @batsy @erzascarletbookgasm thank you all!! 🤗 She seemed her usual happy self this morning lol. Still a knot on her forehead but it has gone down! 6d
lele1432 @vivastory @erzascarletbookgasm omg...that wine... 😂 I think I was a little TOO adventurous. It also TASTED like orange Jell-O shots but mixed with cough syrup!! 🙊 Never had anything like that and I think it is the reason I woke up early with a pounding headache lol. 😩 They all can't be a winner I suppose. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 6d

Started my second selection for #NewYearWhoDis yesterday. I really like this epigraph. Lol @RachelO I think it gets more humorous but right now it is a bit bleak with the MC's contemplations of ending it all. And omg the part about his daughter had me 😱😱😱!

RachelO 😱 I think we have our word for the month: BLEAK!!! 😂😂 You‘re making me want to read this one again - it‘s sad, but I think it has a lot of warmth to it. In Icelandic, its title is Scars, which makes at least as much sense as Hotel Silence. 🤞you like it! 1w
lele1432 @RachelO Lol yes!! 😂 And I can see that being a perfect title! I'm really intrigued so far! I'm almost to the point where he goes on his trip! (edited) 1w

Pickpick

This memoir was about so much more than just a disadvantaged Malawian boy creating a windmill for electricity. At its core is a tale of ingenuity in the face of adversity, coupled with the power of friends, family, and strangers who believe in you and your potential. 4⭐️s! Other topics tackled included: scarcity, famine, effects of hunger on the brain, predatory price-gouging during famine, school fees and the cycle of poverty,👇🏽

lele1432 “Magic” and superstition used as a scapegoat for HIV/AIDS and famine, deforestation aiding in flooding and drought, farm livelihood dependent upon weather and fertilizer, and government corruption. It packed in a LOT and I admit some of the technical parts went over my head. But overall, an inspirational story I‘m glad to have read! Thanks @RachelO! (edited) 1w

lele1432 @RachelO yes! I know here in the States we really take free primary/secondary education for granted. The school fees situation creating this cycle of poverty despite his obvious talent and ability to learn was heartbreaking. But it had a happy ending! 😊 1w

Trying to end (or at least reduce) my stress cycle at work by listening to Harry Potter for #PotterADay! It's funny, I turned it on this morning and immediately felt myself get calm and smile. Then it dawned on me just how much this series helped me get thru a tough job a few years ago. I was pretty miserable and would listen to the series every day commuting to and from the office and it calmed me every time. It really worked!

Chrissyreadit I love your activity to break the stress cycle so much!!! Actually, Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice and psych are my stress busting tv go to‘s 1w

Linsy That's amazing!!! HP helped me get through some pretty rough times as well. Everything would feel hopeless, and then I'd just open the book and immediately feel better. I think at that point I was just continuously restarting Half-Blood Prince. It's my favorite! 5d

Finally able to start back my book reports & forecasts after a few very busy weeks!😫
#BookReport: Finished The Memory Police & continued my #NewYearWhoDis book, tagged. It started off detailing Malawi folklore, then the narrator‘s father‘s life as a young trader & marrying his mother. I just finished the famine part & whew was it fascinating but brutal! Pets usually aren‘t a trigger for me but I must admit the dog going thru famine choked me up!

Cinfhen I‘ve seen the tagged book on so many best lists but I‘m not sure I‘m up for it 😬 and you already warned me that Memory Police is weird weird!!!!!! 😊😁 2w
RachelO Aah yes, I‘m sorry. It‘s told in such a matter-of-fact way, it makes it all very real 😞 2w
RachelO But there‘s definitely sunshine from here on in! 2w
lele1432 @Cinfhen lol yeah I think Memory Police is an acquired taste.😆The tagged is a really good and interesting story of ingenuity in the face of adversity, but the level of poverty is indeed tough to learn about, and the corruption is pretty infuriating. 2w
lele1432 @RachelO oh it‘s okay! I‘m almost done and was so happy when his windmill worked and he proved everyone wrong lol.😊 2w

This was a #LMPBC pick for #Round7 #GroupI Int‘l Translation. Translated from Japanese, this was a (near future?) dystopia that left me thinking a lot about memory, what it means to truly “disappear,” and the hopelessness of losing one‘s voice. Everyday objects disappear & The Memory Police are hunting anyone who remembers. I like “weird” books so this one worked for me! I enjoyed the writing & the growing sense of dread the author created. 4⭐️s!

Cinfhen I‘m so curious about this book!!! How weird was it?? Too weird or just slightly weird?? 😆 2w
lele1432 @Cinfhen lol! I‘d say pretty weird. It starts off mild enough, but by the end, it‘s not really based in any sort of reality. And you won‘t get any explanations for why/how things came to be, so don‘t expect that either lol. I was left wondering if it was one big allegory or..? 🤷🏽‍♀️ BUT it‘s a quick read and also had some thought-provoking depictions of scarcity! 2w
Cinfhen Nope!!! Not for me!! Thanks 🙏🏼 😘but glad you enjoyed it 2w
lele1432 @Cinfhen always glad to help! 😆 2w

Damned If I Do: Stories | Percival Everett
post image

Getting a head start on #wondrouswednesday!

1. Percival Everett is an author I‘ve long neglected, but committed to read more of this year! His storytelling abilities are exceptional, especially the way he weaves in hard-hitting satire that‘s so on point with human nature.

2. Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson! It was the most surprising of my favorite reads last year. Combustible kids sounded too far-fetched, but I loved it!

I unfortunately had not heard of this children‘s classic until it was a pick for #LMPBC #Round7 #GroupC. I am so glad I went on this rabbit adventure full of mischief and danger. I never knew rabbit life could be so perilous! It does take some getting used to the foliage descriptions, but they made sense considering the world the reader is immersed in. I think I may get a copy for myself, perhaps on audio. This has been mailed! 4⭐️s!

JaclynW I've never looked at rabbits the same way after reading this book.😳 3w
lele1432 @JaclynW Haha yes!! I have been exposed to a completely different world of rabbits and I can‘t look at them the same! 3w

lele1432 @JaclynW lol yes! I almost wrote that in this post but ran out of room. I‘m not quite so sure how this became a classic for children...aside from it being about rabbits...but it seemed more relatable to me as an adult! 🤷🏽‍♀️😂 3w

JaclynW @lele1432 Exactly! 3w
lele1432 @TiredLibrarian yep! I was unprepared for the amount of danger, suspense, and the pulse-racing parts! It‘s definitely not just a cute story about bunnies lol. 3w

RachelO Oh wow, you‘re super-organised- I‘m so pleased you‘re happy with the list! Have you read others by Attica Locke? I‘ve just realised Heaven My Home is the 2nd in a series, so if you‘re buying you may prefer to swap it out for the first - Bluebird Bluebird. I usually read series in random order, but you‘d probably get more out of book 1! And audiobook is a great plan - HMH is actually the only of her books that I haven‘t read on audio. 1mo

RachelO #ReadingEurope2020 sounds like so much fun! I was very tempted to join, but had decided to scale back on challenges this year - which fortunately left me space to do this instead!! 1mo
lele1432 @RachelO so I actually have Bluebird on audio lol! I just haven't gotten to it yet, but that's why I was thinking of going audio with HMH as well once I read the first one. I couldn't resist the Europe one, but may have to scale back on others lol. 1mo

Crimson613 the book of life? 1mo
lele1432 @Crimson no sorry! This one turned out to be harder than I thought it would be lol. It's a modern classic of short stories and this is a special edition. I bought it from Apple books when it was on sale several months ago. 1mo

My view at the dentist. The movie "Holiday Rush." I really like Romany Malco's acting! #HolidayMovie #WinterGames #TMSkellington

hes7 Is the movie good? I‘ve been wanting to watch it. 1mo
lele1432 @hes7 it actually was! Funny but still dealt with some tough real-life situations. Had a happy ending. 😊 1mo
