Heart of a Royal | Hannah Currie
Pickpick

Such a surprising and delightful debut novel from Hannah Currie! Yes, there is definitely an ethereal romantic element of a country named Peverell ruled by a monarchy and the dazzle and glamour of royalty, but the book is so much more than another sweet YA prince-falls-in-love-with-a-commoner trope. There is a certain layer of politics and intrigue and faith woven into the storyline that is refreshing and fascinating. A fun YA fiction!

Silent Night Suspect | Sharee Stover
Pickpick

The fast-paced action and suspense moved the plot at a great speed worthy of the romantic suspense genre. The intricate plot line was fun to follow and the twist and turns had me guessing at the identity of the villain (which eluded me until the end). The characters of Asia and Slade have a huge backstory which was interesting to discover as they dodged the bad guys and figured out the mystery behind Asia‘s husband‘s death.

Lynette Eason never disappoints with her well-written plot and high-powered, adrenaline-laced action and suspense and memorable characters. I love that these four novellas take place in the small town of Tanner Hollow, NC and are connected by the characters in each story. The first three were previously released under their titles and the last novella is a new one. If you love romantic suspense, you‘ll love this book!

Match for Emma | Pepper Basham
Pickpick

Such a heart-rending story of loss, owning the grief, and finding hope in the midst of grief. With her sharp sense of humor and great banter, Pepper Basham livens up the predictable plot that closely follows Jane Austen's Emma with the lovable characters of the Mitchell clan. Jon and Emma's past grief and how they deal with it presently gives hope for the future and really brings home what a lived-out faith looks like.

Lake Season | Denise Hunter
Pickpick

Denise Hunter‘s books are gut-wrenching, soul-stirring, heart-breaking, redemptive and utterly romantic. This first book in the new series is no exception. The author does throw in a bit of split-time twist to the plot, which is something new in her writing style. Her attention to detail in the plot and characterization is incredible, her writing is easy to follow, the plot moves at a good pace and her characters are lovable. Totally enjoyable!

The End of the Magi | Patrick W. Carr

This is a well-researched and captivating Biblical fiction centered around prophecies of Jesus' birth and the magi eagerly awaiting the Messiah's triumph. The writing is intense and splendid, and it will draw you into the heart of the political and religious unrest in the Persian and Roman Empires. All fans of Biblical fiction will absolutely love this book. It's a must read, especially as we approach the season of Christmas.

Smoke Screen | Terri Blackstock
Pickpick

It's another well-written novel from Terri Blackstock that is reminiscent of her Moonlighters series. It has intrigue but the emphasis is more on the family drama and relationships as Brenna struggles through an ugly divorce and its aftermath and her old high school sweetheart Nate returns to their hometown. If you enjoy contemporary fiction with a strong theme of overcoming adversity, you will enjoy this book.

What a surprising and completely satisfying conclusion to the Haven Manor series! The setting and the world that the author weaves during this time period are incredible. If you enjoy historical fiction with a good dose of mystery and intrigue, you will absolutely love this book. It will captivate you from the prologue and have you turning the pages for just one more chapter to try to piece together what's happening.

The Bright Unknown | Elizabeth Byler Younts
Pickpick

The author writes with such haunting, powerful, heart-wrenching innocence through the eyes of Brighton, a child born in an asylum during the 1920s. The despair and hopelessness of her teen years in the asylum are balanced out by her present-day 1990 voice in which we are aware that she‘s lived a good life after escaping the asylum and infuses the whole story with hope. I am still reeling from the beautiful complexity of this book.

What a great collection of historical novellas written by some of my absolute favorite authors in the genre! And I learned quite a bit about the Harvey Houses and the women working there who made the restaurants notable. All four novellas are masterfully crafted and have beautifully developed characters and plots that make them feel like full-length novels. If you enjoy historical novellas, you will be delighted with this collection.

Hereafter | Jody Hedlund
Pickpick

This finale to the Lost Princesses series is Jody Hedlund at her finest. Though I expected to see some surprises in the plot, I was not prepared for the intensity of emotion, flurry of non-stop action with danger and rescues aplenty, depth of character development and unexpected plot twists in this beautifully crafted novel. If you love YA medieval fiction, you will absolutely adore this book and the entire series.

This first book in the series takes us to Hope Mountain in 1873 Colorado where we meet the Nordegren sisters who have been reared up high in the mountain by a set of grandparents who avoided and feared civilization. With her trademark humor and easy-to-read writing style, the author paints a beautiful backdrop of the untamed mountain as the three sisters meet the Warden family from the lowlands. This book combining both of the authors‘ talents exceeded my expectations. What a beautifully crafted novel paralleling an author‘s contemporary life with her fictional characters from the historical romance she‘s writing! Another fantastic fast-paced and adrenaline-laced romantic suspense from Irene Hannon! The author always delivers intense action and high-level suspense in a well-written story with a believable and detailed plot, propelled by swoon-worthy heroes and noteworthy heroines; this book is no exception. The author also gives the villain a voice in the plot, which truly masks who the villain is until the very end (I love how she does that!).

Wow. And I had thought The Line Between (book 1) had been intense, action-filled, and terrifying (in a good, suspenseful thriller kind of way). This second book, A Single Light, tops the first.
