This novel felt like a mix of Big Little Lies and The Escape Room. I devoured it in every free moment I had and finished it in two days. I‘ve read some amazing novels lately and this was a 5 star read for me. A murder mystery and also social commentary on the experience of women, in the workplace and in daily life.

AmyG It reminded me of Big Little Lies, too. 14h

I haven‘t participated in swaps in a while because I‘ve run into way too many untrustworthy people through participating and hosting book swaps and postal book clubs. Why didn‘t anyone tell me to move this to the top of my TBR months ago?! This true crime book is compelling as hell. I spent all my free time the last two days reading it. If you enjoy true crime, you have to read this RIGHT NOW. It has my vote in the 2019 Goodreads Awards in the Nonfiction Category for sure! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

teebe Adding this to my TBR immediately. This case legit freaks me out because of how random and calculated the murders were. 3d
collegecatlady @teebe Even the bits of interview from the killer in this novel are insanely creepy 3d

An amazing experimental horror novel that takes allegory to the next level. This certainly isn‘t for everyone and there is a lot of animal harm in the novel. However, the critique of academia is so brutally honest that it‘s exactly what I needed to read right now.

As a writer, I‘ve read a lot of “how to write” books. This one was very middle of the road for me. I have many that I‘d recommend before this one. The advice isn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t as engaging as other books such as Catherine Brady‘s “Story Logic and the Craft of Fiction” or Butler‘s “From Where You Dream.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This novel is not for the faint of heart. It contains the most brutal monster I‘ve ever read about: Ruth. There is child abuse, both mental and physical, including sexual abuse. This novel is hard to stomach and will anger you in so many ways, but that‘s the point. Children and women are tortured in ways that are inconceivable every day. We must listen (like one character doesn‘t) and speak out (like another eventually learns to do). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed the first section of the novel, but the second section became a little too ridiculous. Things fell into place quickly and too many coincidences were happening. In my opinion, this is sloppy writing. The two sections felt like different novels and the second part was too rushed. However, I really loved the first section and thought that the pacing and concept was thrilling.

I don‘t know why I keep reading Ruth Ware when I‘m disappointed in her rushed endings every time. Maybe it‘s my fear of missing out since everyone else was reading this novel. Ware creates very atmospheric, slow builds, but never delivers in the execution of the endings. They are rushed and so left of center that they ruin my experience. This is a nice read for brainless entertainment, but I‘ve got to stop putting myself through this 😰

sparrowssavvy I get so excited for her books but other than the Death of Mrs. Westaway, none of them have wowed me. Yet I find I must read all her books... 1mo
collegecatlady @sparrowssavvy I mostly get fear of missing out regarding popular books. I have read In a Dark, Dark Wood as well and even the setting felt too similar to me. It feels like she writes the same book again and again and just changes the last fifteen pages where there is a reveal. It‘s frustrating! 1mo
sparrowssavvy @collegecatlady people seem to really love them and they are so lauded that I completely believe that I‘m going to be blown each and every time. None of them truly grip me the way that other writers in this genre do. 1mo
See All 7 Comments
Ruthiella Same here. I think what bothers me most about her books is that her protagonists are such messes. But I‘ve read three of her books. The premises are always so intriguing and for sure I also feel the FOMO. 1mo
MicheleinPhilly I gave up after her first 2. If you don‘t wow me in 2 books, you never will. I have a TBR mountain to tackle! 1mo

I really wanted to like this novel more than I did. I loved the perfume making and murderer combination, but I just find myself struggling with historical fiction. The prose seemed a bit stilted because of both the historical aspect of the novel and the time period the author wrote it in. This was so middle of the road for me, and I wished so badly that it wasn‘t. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shvonne There is a German show on Netflix that is about a group of friends who have read the book. It‘s super dark and has a different vibe than the book. 1mo

Even though this ARC is far from finished - the preface is missing and some art is just sketches - this graphic novel has the potential to be a huge up and coming seller next year.
