13 April 1919 - the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. But before the world took stock of the horrors that Gen Dyer unleashed in Punjab, one man waged a war for justice for Punjab. Even though the odds were stacked against him, an Indian fought for what resulted in the longest running trial that got the world talking about the adversities of the British Empire in India.
This marvelous piece of history rooted in Kerala, with a profoundly global appeal.

'My Sister, the Serial Killer' by Nigerian-English writer Oyinkan Braithwaite is the sleeper hit this year. A dark and unnerving thriller, the novel is about Ayoola, a remorseless and irresponsible killer, and her remorseful yet enabling elder-sister, Korebe. The definitive flavor here is a wry humour that takes the edge off an otherwise dark and unnerving tale of macabre.

Latitudes of Longing | Shubhangi Swarup
post image

"When human bloodshed seeps into the cracks of the land, the earth‘s scabs and wounds cannot heal… They can only fester. Your violence and your wars are like gangrene to the earth‘s flesh. You possess gadgets that can take you to the moon, yet you are blind to the mountains and rivers right in front of you. We have hacked Hindustan into a hundred islands with our borders, mutinies and wars. It is crumbling into the ocean."

Pickpick

Shubhangi weaves a tale that transcends geographical and emotional thresholds of love and longing. She writes of a love that transcends the flesh. It is about a love melds into the banality of everyday life and that is as true as time.
Shubhangi Swarup's debut novel seems well crafted for a debut. Her writing is sheer pleasure to read. This is one book I would ask everyone to read to fall in love with the beauty of a narration.

The books is based on a standup comedy act by Dovaleh G as seen by Avishai Lazar, an old friend of the stand up comedian. More than a stand up comedy act, Dovaleh is unraveling in front of the crowd.
The story is an Intense tide of various emotions. The deliberate uneasiness of being taken into someone's personal life is a constant throughout the novel. It is gripping and an unusual rendering of hearts basal emotions.

With a predictable plotline and hence hardly any suspense the story is narrated through 11 different PoVs which can get pretty tiresome. If you can, this could be missed.

Mehso-so

Reading the book felt like the author gave me an all access pass into her journal/diary. Twinkle Khanna is witty, observant and highly insightful at places. More than an actress, or the wife or daughter of a star she seems like the quintessential urban, educated, intelligent women juggling her domestic and professional lives with dexterity. Her tone is satiric and that, I think, is super sexy and suave on a woman.
