Traveling with Ghosts: A Memoir | Shannon Leone Fowler
post image

Why is it that I can listen to and read the most devastating books about crimes and wars and murders and, while feeling empathy, manage to be mostly objective. Yet as soon as I try to read a book about one person's grief for another after a random accidental death I have to bail like 10 minutes in. So this book is a DNF through no fault of it's own but solely due to my inability to deal 🤷🏼‍♀️

Cinfhen I really “enjoyed” this audio....Shannon‘s story was so compelling for me 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4w
kelseynicburke @Cinfhen I'm sure I'll get back to it! It'll just have to be at a time when I'm feeling exceptionally well, like July ☀️ 4w
Cinfhen It‘s a crazy story but there are some really beautiful moments too. I think I was impartial to the 2 Israeli girls who befriended Shannon in Thailand. I recognized right away, that “chutzpah” that Israeli‘s possess but it comes from such a deep place of caring. 4w

Megan, welcome to the fold of heathens who value human life. We can always use more members.

I admire people who realize they've done wrong and done harm to others and, instead of doubling down on their position, change it entirely. There's no denying that Megan Phelps-Roper has spread a lot of hate in her life but I hope she finds a way to rise above the vicious rhetoric she was raised to deliver to the world.

Between moving and having to work nonstop lately I haven't been able to get anything done. My snail mail has been terribly neglected (promise I haven't forgotten you #poutinepenpals) and my apartment is a mess. But the healing power of Luna on my lap, a good audiobook, and a half hour session with my vitamin D lamp before my nightshift is pretty perfect right now 😻🎧☀️ #catsoflitsy

I still have 2 hours left of this audiobook but I feel confident enough that I'm early recommending. This is a book that has the potential to be life changing or life affirming for many people. I recommend it to those who are experiencing any level of gender dysphoria, those who love someone in the above mentioned community and those who work with the public in any way (especially with children). But really, I'd like to recommend it everyone.

Positive: I appreciate how well researched and extensive a reporting this is and I learned so much about this case
Negative: I needed an editor to shave about 200 pages off of it. There was so much repetition. Many lines were even repeated verbatim in multiple chapters.

Do you ever reach the last 100 or so pages of a book, having already fallen in love with all the characters, then realized that things are going too well to sustain the story for that long? So logically, you conclude something devastating is probably going to happen soon to one of the characters you're so invested in. That's pretty much where I'm at right now. Got that impending literary doom feeling 😬

I‘m moving tomorrow and my apartment is empty except for my bed and a few necessities. Last night, Luna and I were sitting on my bed reading Pet Sematary during a storm. Power goes out. I realize I packed my flashlight in one of a million boxes. I‘m alone in an empty, dark apartment with my cat, a creepy book and my phone at 42% 👀. Luckily, the guys across the hall had an extra flashlight to save me from my classic horror movie scenario🤦‍♀️

Halfway update: Favourite things about this book so far are 1) the characters grappling with their feelings about death is, in my opinion, some of Stephen King‘s more memorable writing and 2) the character Ellie. She‘s just this wise, curious little girl who adores her cat and I love reading scenes between her and her Dad. I think the relationship is really well done and heartwarming and 3) of course, Church the creepy cat 🧟‍♂️

A lot of littens seem to have cats and I have a question. Luna is 3 years old and she‘s never been a cuddly cat. She lets me pet her and sleeps near me but she doesn‘t really initiate contact. But lately she‘s really cuddly which I love but I‘m worried it may mean she‘s stressed or sick. She laid on my chest and burrowed into my neck earlier which she‘s never done. Anyone know what might cause a quick personality change like that? #catsoflitsy

KristenDuck Just keep up with your vet appointments. But honestly three years is when cats transition from kittens to adults, so she might just be maturing! 3mo
kelseynicburke @kristenduck hope that means she‘ll stay cuddly 😻 3mo
IvoryLunatic Has anything else changed in your household that may have made her more comfortable? I had two cats in college and one of them got sick and died. I always thought the second one just wasn't that affectionate but once she turned into the only cat, she got super cuddly since there was no more competition I guess. 3mo
See All 10 Comments
Eyelit One of my cats went from standoffish to kinda cuddly around the 3 year mark... so it could be a maturing thing 3mo
Tamra Maybe just hitting the lazy cat stage. 😻 3mo
kelseynicburke @IvoryLunatic actually my roommate just moved to a new place and she took her cat with her so now it‘s just me and Luna. Maybe that‘s it! Although, if you‘re right my cuddling days are numbered. We‘re moving into a new place next week with two new cats 🤦‍♀️ 3mo
IvoryLunatic @kelseynicburke maybe if you can spend a lot of time cuddling until (though I know that‘s hard while you‘re moving), she‘ll get used to it and still want to it after. 3mo
kelseynicburke @IvoryLunatic I‘ll find the time 😻 3mo
annkuch13 I'd agree with @KristenDuck and @Eyelit that it may just be maturing. As long are there aren't other signs she may be sick like not eating or kitty litter issues, I wouldn't be worried. 3mo
JenReadsAlot I had a cat for 2 years before he sat on my lap so as long as everything else is okay enjoy the snuggles! 3mo

Bailedbailed

I tend to stay with a book to the end (especially on audio) even if I‘m not super into it, but I couldn‘t do it this time. It‘s about some wealthy teens/young adults who broke into celebrities‘ houses to steal their stuff and then became annoyed when there were consequences. I could‘ve handled the unlikeable characters had the writing made up for it, but found it to be fragmented and lacking any cohesive narrative as far as I listened (about 75%).

Megabooks I bailed on audio too, but I liked the movie. 3mo

Big news! I found the newest addition to my favourites shelf. This book was absolutely amazing. There were many times when I just read a paragraph or a page over and over because the writing was so perfect. The story had a vague magical quality while managing to remain grounded in realism, and I loved the characters and relationships. It was all done so well ❄️🦊

I love true crime books but after this one I think I‘m gonna stop reading and listening to any that are more than a couple decades old, no matter how many awards they‘ve won. Between The Onion Field and this book, I feel uncomfortably complicit in the homophobia and transphobia displayed and celebrated by these police departments.
