This audiobook about a former trad wife escaping Christian patriarchy reminds me of the conservative pastor‘s son I dated years ago. I am so thankful I didn‘t wind up with him.

Pickpick

This steamy book had several things I loved:

A romance that wasn‘t toxic.

A corrupt politician who is held accountable for his actions.

Two characters healing and growing after they experienced abuse. (Isadora was emotionally abused by her mother, Karim was emotionally and physically abused by his ex-wife.)

Loved the characters, loved the story, loved it all ♥️

Estranged parent Vivian King refuses to be cast as the villain in anyone‘s narrative. So she pens a book to rewrite the “one-sided” estrangement narrative and recast herself as the hero. In her narrative rewrite, parents are the good guys and their estranged children are villains. Her book is meant to convince the world that her equally one-sided narrative is the correct one, that way she will always be seen as the good guy by default. ⬇️

Kerrbearlib If you read this book to better understand estrangement, be warned it is biased and one-sided. I encourage you to read the accounts of estranged children and estranged parents with different opinions than Vivian King‘s. Estrangement is a complicated issue that isn‘t one-size fits all like Vivian King would like readers to believe. (edited) 4d

The ADHD cycle of burnout. I‘ve experienced this before 😂

Jari-chan Same. Sending hugs. 1w
Bookwomble Today I'm at six o'clock on that cycle. I had a counselling session in the early afternoon , and I'm reading/scrolling Litsy for a bit to minimise the risk of advancing further round the clock 🕕 Then I have some ironing to calmly do while not allowing my brain to fasten onto any random thing that pops into my awareness 😌 Thanks for posting: the struggle is real 😄 1w

#MentalHealthMonday

I experienced emotional abuse as a child. When I tried to defend myself, I was told to shut up & be grateful. For years, I thought gratitude = toxic positivity & manipulation. Today, I know genuine gratitude is good for my mental health. I like to think about boring things I‘m grateful for - toilet plungers, toenail clippers, the lint filter in my dryer, etc. They‘re not pretty, but they make life better. ⬇️

Kerrbearlib Practicing gratitude is good for my mental health, as long as it‘s genuine & not being done to ignore problems or deny reality. ⬇️ (edited) 1mo
Kerrbearlib It‘s important now that we recognize the difference between genuine gratitude & manipulative gratitude. An example of manipulative gratitude: Trump angrily demanding his supporters stop focusing on Epstein and instead focus on the great things his administration has done.To be clear, I don‘t think he‘s done anything great. But his supporters do. To get them to shut up about Epstein, he must manipulate them to focus on something else. ⬆️ (edited) 1mo
IriDas That is an interesting idea, being grateful for innocuous things. 1mo
See All 10 Comments
CSeydel I agree with you 100% and I‘m sorry people are jumping on you for this. I‘m sorry those people have had the negative experiences that caused them to think that way, but I have found that genuinely, mindfully turning my mind toward gratitude has improved (and continues to improve) my attitude, my mood, and my behavior toward others. Best wishes and I hope you are well. ✌️ 1mo

CatLass007 I love the idea of being grateful for lint traps and other small things that we just take for granted. I am going to make every effort to do just that. Today I am grateful for something a little bigger than that but after my surgery, I finally got to eat today. And for lunch, they gave me potato soup, which is my favorite. It was so good, I asked for it for dinner and for breakfast in the morning. I am grateful for the excellent care (cont)⬇️ 1mo
CatLass007 I am receiving here in the hospital. There has not been a bad Apple in the bunch. I also am grateful for something that happened on Monday. The registered dietitian here at the hospital came by my room. My mom also was a registered dietitian and the woman here knew my mom. She said that my mom was her favorite dietitian she had ever worked with. I know my mom made a lot of impact on many people‘s lives. But getting to meet those (cont)⬇️ 1mo

I am learning so much from this book, & not just about money! Paco de Leon introduced me to the concept of the window of tolerance. I‘ll include a link that describes it better than I can. It‘s made me think about emotional regulation and how it can be difficult to handle some situations if we have a small window of tolerance.

Today‘s #MentalHealthMonday question is inspired by Paco de Leon‘s concept of the circle of control. When Paco has a moment of powerlessness, she focuses on what she can control. I‘ve adopted this approach when I feel powerless. It doesn‘t fix things I feel powerless about, but it helps me process them without falling into a pit of despair.

dabbe Will do; thanks for the tag! Love this quote and thought, too! 🩵💙🩵 2mo
willaful I find I can have a problem with controlling too much and thereby feeding my anxiety. I spiral into trying to think of everything that could possibly go wrong that I might be able to do something about and it becomes more superstitious than anything else. 2mo
Santie I overthink, make it worse, crash out, and then the only thing I feel capable of doing is sleeping 😔 2mo
See All 17 Comments
ImperfectCJ I responded to today's prompt before reading your explanation...it's interesting that we're on the same wavelength. 2mo
DebinHawaii Thanks for the tag. I had to go look up the circle of control which I liked a lot. I definitely get anxious when I feel like I don‘t have control. 😬 2mo
IriDas Good advice. 2mo
CatLass007 I don‘t just feel powerless right now, I feel completely helpless. I am in total limbo. I am waiting for the guillotine to drop. I don‘t know what is going to happen to my Medicare benefits or my disability income. I live in a country that has lost any kind of moral center. The current occupant of the oval office is pure evil, and has sold his soul to the devil. His followers who voted for him are complicit in his evil. There is no one (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 left in my life who is not complicit. There is no one left in my life I trust. 2mo
Kerrbearlib @CatLass007 sending hugs and support. I agree, the country has lost its moral center. I am so sorry that the people in your life were complicit in that loss. I know what you mean about not trusting people. It‘s hard to trust anyone who backed the terrible things that are happening. 2mo
Kerrbearlib @dabbe thank you! 2mo
Kerrbearlib @willaful I know what you mean about controlling too much. Have you read the book Thriving With Anxiety? The author talks about accepting that bad things will happen and sometimes there‘s no way we can predict them. Easier said than done, but it made me feel a little better to read that point. 2mo
CatLass007 @Kerrbearlib Thank you. Some days are better than others. Wednesday, when I made this post, was a particularly bad day. The rest of the week was not quite so bad. 2mo
Kerrbearlib @Santie sometimes sleeping is just what we need when we feel powerless. Do you feel better/less powerless after you sleep? I find that I do most of the time - a little rest can really help. 2mo

#MentalHeathMonday

Hard to believe it‘s the end of June! It‘s been a good month on a personal level. I‘ve had moments of joy, I‘ve read great books, and I‘ve stayed emotionally regulated despite the terrible things in the world. I‘m heartbroken and angry about all that‘s happening - but overall, I‘m doing better than I thought I might be six months into 2025.

How was your June?

Deblovestoread I sort of tapped out mid-June. Didn‘t pick up my daily reading for almost 2 weeks, scrolled by more than paying attention to posts here and elsewhere. Played mind numbing games. The last few days have been better so I think it was a much needed break. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I too was busy with the library sale for 8 days all day and it helped me escape a tiny bit. 2mo
TheBookHippie Hydrate and get the right sleep. Make sure to break bread with other people and make sure laughter is a part of your life. I think having coping skills with my CPTSD & anxiety actually helps me here. I‘m use to being calm and peace when it‘s STORM everywhere you look. That being said I also have very firm boundaries. June was good for me. Better than I thought as well.. 2mo
See All 11 Comments
IriDas My June was all over the place. For n stuff with my kids and lots of reading because work is off for three weeks. But work was off for three weeks. 🚫💵😔 And, of course, the world is so terrible right now. I started walking at the beach before work and that‘s helped a little. There‘s another protest on Friday here. 🪧 I don‘t blame you for taking a break. I know it helps to do so. Make sure you take care of yourself as much as possible. 2mo
AnnCrystal 💕🙏🏼🫂✌🏼💝. 2mo
CatLass007 I loathe and despise Summer. And it‘s only just beginning. I would rather run barefoot, maybe even naked, in the snow rather than dealing with the oppressive heat of Summer. So that‘s me physically. I‘m trying to stay informed with what‘s going on in the world while not letting it overwhelm me. That is not an easy thing. Some days I read the news some days I don‘t. I also have to avoid certain people on the extreme right, and others on (cont)⬇️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 the radical left. I know we all know the kind of stuff the people on the right side, but I‘m appalled when I hear folks on the radical left saying it would be a good idea to storm the White House and kill the occupant of the Oval Office. I don‘t know if that would be a second American Civil War or total anarchy. I am not for either of those things. Molly is still with me. I thought that I would have to have her euthanized last (cont)⬇️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 week. She‘s lost so much weight but her days are good. She‘s grooming. She‘s jumping to the high spots that she adores. She‘s affectionate. She doesn‘t have bad days. She has little things that are bad during some days. I go in for surgery on Friday, 25 June and will be in the hospital for a week. I hate the idea of something happening with her while I am gone and someone else having to deal with it. Someone will come by daily to feed, (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 water, and scoop for all the kitties. But I need to be here for her when her time comes. So that‘s been on my mind for the last couple of days. But mostly, other than the heat, I‘m doing pretty well. (edited) 2mo
Kerrbearlib @CatLass007 glad to hear Molly is still with you and that she is having good days. Keep us posted about her and your surgery! 2mo
dabbe Thank you for the tag, and for checking in with us on Mondays! 😍 Like @CatLass007, I abhor the heat of summer. So ironic, being born and still living in Phoenix. IriDas Im supposed to be coping? Excuse me a moment **screams into the void** OK, I‘m back. 😉 Would love to be added. I‘m glad you can get some refreshment today. Much needed right now. 2mo
Deblovestoread To cope I‘m taking a day off from news. I have a couple of small chores to do and then I am finishing up my cards for #SummerCardSwap. Tonight I‘m going to an outside concert with my daughter where I intend to dance with abandon and sing (badly) at the top of my lungs. 2mo
dabbe I do! 🙋‍♀️ And thank you! I'm taking the dogs for a walk before it gets above 100º; then, I hope to get some housework done while jamming to my favorite 70s-80s tunes, then read in the afternoon, and watch the D-Backs. NO NEWS. Totally hiding from that. 💙 2mo

dabbe @Deblovestoread I hope you and your daughter shake down that concert house! 😍 2mo
CatLass007 I‘m avoiding the news as much as possible, listening to good music, and listening to good books. I also am wondering why one of my cats, Benjamin, thinks that the best time to cuddle is in the summer when it‘s 90° out. This morning when I was still in bed, he decided to climb on my pillow and press his back up against my left ear. It‘s OK I‘ve been having earache in that ear. The last few days and heat is always good for an earache. I (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 will request prayer and positive thoughts sent Molly‘s way (and mine) since her health is declining and I need to be super aware of how she‘s behaving because I think the day to take her to be euthanized will be this week. I just need to be careful not to hold onto her for too long. I have to remember that this is for her not for me. 2mo
AnnCrystal @CatLass007 prayers for you both during this difficult time. Molly just needs to know you're near when she does journey on 😢🙏🏼🫂💝. (edited) 2mo

#TuesdayTunes a day late.

Love this song about being the family scapegoat & ending generational trauma.

“Please
Handle with ease
Ironing out a 50 year old crease
This shit is not a disease I am free
Healing what's broken 'fore I'm deceased
Fertilize new branches in this family tree”

I learned about this book thanks to Madisyn Brown‘s YouTube video on being the family scapegoat. I‘m surprised I‘ve never heard of the book before. I‘m including the link to the video for those who are interested.

TieDyeDude I haven't heard of Madisyn, but that is a horrible environment to grow up it. I think the Allegory of the Cave is from Plato's Republic. It is such an important concept! 3mo

A romantic comedy about a singer/actress who discovers she has a baby thanks to a mixup at fertility clinic. I‘m not usually a fan of the secret baby trope, but I‘m intrigued by this story. I‘m listening to the audiobook and it‘s been entertaining so far!
