Ring the Hill | Tom Cox
post image

A big ol‘ hug-of-a-book, that‘ll have you wanting to climb a hill, go sea-swimming and/or put another log on the fire. Whilst listening to prog-folk.

I enjoy Tom Cox on Twitter, but wasn‘t sure if that would translate to longer-form. It does. He rambles all over the place (in all senses) but always with a sense of Wonder, sheer enthusiasm for people, places, and the natural world.

RachelO Avoid if you can‘t handle sweary cats/Dads/authors. And you might want to skip the section on the loss of 2 of his cats (end of last chapter) if you‘re feeling fragile.

#BBRC #CatsNap (though his rarely do) and (a bit of a stretch, but...) #Booked2019 #SocialMediaFocus because it‘s a crowdfunded book through Unbound, and he dicusses the impact of his cat‘s SM fame (Newsflash: people are weird!)

An email of #holidaycheer from #NetGalley UK this morning- I didn‘t know how desperately I wanted this to happen til this showed up. Sounds like it‘s v early days but still. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

#deardecember @Eggs

julesG Oooooo! I've been dreaming of this for ages. 1d
ljuliel That‘s great news ! 1d
RachelO @ljuliel @julesG Looks like it‘s just extracts of a few minutes with a short questionnaire for feedback at the mo, but 🤞🤞🤞 1d

ljuliel Maybe they‘re trying to decide whether to do it for complete books ? I think it‘d be a good idea because audiobooks have become more popular. Our librarian says just this year, their audiobook checkout rate has gone up 25%. I think so many people are busier now , so audio is a good way for them to fit reading into their schedules. (edited) 24h
RachelO @ljuliel I think so - says they‘re planning on launching full books in Summer 2020, so this is probably to iron out some glitches. There was an article floating about the other day saying that uk sales of audiobooks are predicted to exceed ebook sales (or something) next year. It kind of makes sense! 24h
ljuliel Wow, that‘s amazing. I‘m just glad people are reading, whichever way they choose to do it. 📖 🎧 24h
ljuliel Interesting article. That‘s quite a surprising figure. It‘d be interesting to have a job like that , and figure out what the trends are in books each year. I know I have listened to lots more in the past year or so , but have been lately trying to also read my Kindle a bit more. Sometimes it‘s fun if I have both copies, to read along with the narrator. 24h
Eggs How exciting ! I can tell that cheered you🤗👏🏻🤗 23h
RachelO @ljuliel I‘m a bit dubious about the figures tbh but I‘m guessing the trends make sense - I wonder if it‘s just Audible/Kindle purchases they‘re looking at - there are a lot of other places you can get ebooks. Audiobooks, less so! I‘ve never tried the reading-along thing - will give it a go one of these days. 23h
RachelO @Eggs 😊 Little things! 23h
Eggs @RachelO Absolutely ❣️ 23h
Cinfhen I listened to a bunch of samples last nigh!!! I thought it was really helpful to have that 5 minute audio clip. I really hope they start offering FULL audiobooks soon!!!!!!!!!! 22h

#deardecember #treesinthetitle

A cozy mystery set in 1930s Singapore. In all honesty, I read this less for the plot, and more for the setting and main character, an independent young local girl and amateur sleuth who works alongside the police.

Sadly, I felt the portrayal of the teenager with learning difficulties could have been (lots) better.

I would, however, give her books another try sometime.

My ACTUAL #weeklyforecast is to carry on reading Ring the Hill. (Look at those #endpapers 😍... )

The fact that it‘s December has just hit as well, so I really want to finish all the books I‘m currently reading before the end of the month and maybe do something a little Christmassy - however, that‘s all a bit more flying pigs than actual forecast, so I‘ll stick with the one book for this week!

Squeezing another middle grade book into #BBRC #YeahBaby #WhenItRainsItPours - and in this case it‘s pouring paint!

Rosie is a young engineer. When her great-great-aunt Rose asks her for help, she meets her Riveter friends “The smartest, sassiest, toughest bunch of airplane builders you ever saw.”

SO much to love in this! Scientists that keep experimenting, an explanation of valves, a bit of a history of Rosie the Riveter, and loads of fun!

LibrarianRyan This has been on my list for a while. I love the picture books I just haven‘t started the chapter books yet. 6d

RachelO @charl08 👍 Will definitely try and find the others! 5d
LibrarianRyan @RachelO I love the picture books so much. There are 3, maybe 4 I think a new one came out this fall that I have not gotten to yet. 4d
RachelO @LibrarianRyan Going to have to find them! A completely unrelated question: Is SAGA an umbrella term, rather than an organisation? 4d

My introduction to Pete the Cat - fairly sure he‘ll be on the shopping list for niece in a few years time. A really fun, bright, cheerful #EasyReader #PublishedInTheLast5Years

Pete goes scuba diving, and is excited to see his first seahorse - but doesn‘t notice who keeps tickling him on his dive. Just great! #BBRC @LibrarianRyan @LibrarianRyan @BookwormAHN

BookwormAHN Looks cute 😺 6d
Slajaunie Pete the Cat actually started out as paintings. I happened to stumble across the art gallery a number of years ago in New Orleans. The proprietor of the gallery informed me that Pete was going to be made into children‘s books. The paintings are notable or famous places with Pete there. Loved the artwork. 6d

I was wind-turbine spotting my entire journey home while reading this the other day. Such a good book!

William grows up in #Malawi, helping on the farm, curious about everything, and with a desire to learn. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a description of famine from someone who‘s lived through it, the fact that you knew it was coming and could do nothing to avert it. And after, his desire to educate himself, & his persistence to build his windmill.

RachelO Absolutely loved it. A fascinating story well-told. Belated #readaroundtheworld #Malawi, plus #BBRC #GrownUp #nonfiction and #nfnov #booked2019 #booktomovie #nonfiction2019 #aboutsurvival 2w

#readaroundtheworld #SouthAfrica

She had me from the first few pages (TMI in comments) - so much going on in such a short novel. Life as a student doctor in South Africa, trying to work out the path to take against the xenophobia aimed at your flatmate, and Just So Tired. (I thought she wrote tiredness so well!) And that‘s before the horrific event takes place. It‘s written as journal entries- I found it powerful and affecting. Trigger Warnings.

RachelO Matlwa won me over straight away. I lived with undiagnosed menorrhagia (heavy bleeding) for maybe 15 years, just dismissed as standard ‘women‘s problems‘ - I quite simply can‘t imagine being in that situation from the very start. Unsurprisingly, it‘s not a topic I‘ve ever seen written about, but it was very real, very well-done. Big thanks to doctors & med staff who stick with medicine despite the tiredness and hate. 2w

This was... disturbing!

Dear NetGalley folks,

Where do you stand on bailing on ARCs? I‘m trying to clear my initial backlog, and have hit one that I‘m finding really quite icky. I would have definitely bailed by now if it wasn‘t an ARC. I kind of feel I should plough on through, but if I‘m struggling at 30%, I‘m going to be seriously narked by 100%. What do you guys do?

Texreader Bail and explain why. I think that review is just as honest and meaningful as finishing it. 3w
Blueberry If it's disturbing I would definitely quit. If it was only boring I might try to get through 50%. Good luck. 3w
julesG Boring? Skim through the rest of the book, but also say so in your review. 3w
See All 13 Comments
ljuliel I used to review a lot for NG , but not much interested anymore. If I started one that was just really not good enough to complete, I‘d send a note to the publisher explaining why I didn‘t complete it. I think they like honest opinions. 3w
julesG Gah, hit send too early. Disturbing? Bail and explain in your review. 3w
BookwormM You now have an option on NG not to review and you can give reasons why I would bail and do that 3w
sprainedbrain Great question... I have wondered this myself as I‘m trying to clear my initials. @BookwormM - do you know how not reviewing affects ratios? 3w
RachelO @Texreader @Blueberry @julesG @ljuliel Thank you so much for replying- really helpful to see how people deal with these. I‘m going to see if I can push myself to 50%, then decide. I‘m finding it distasteful rather than disturbing (plus confusing and just not-for-me), but we‘ll give it one last try! 3w
RachelO @BookwormM @sprainedbrain I‘d forgotten you could do that - thanks! I have actually done that with one which had formatting issues that made it pretty much unreadable. I think you just ‘lose‘ those percentage points, so your ratio doesn‘t improve for that book, even if you give feedback. 😕 3w
batsy I too have bailed and used that "why you're not reviewing" option to explain why. I'm not clear on how it affects the ratio but I don't mind; can't bear slogging through a book or forcing myself to read something that I find icky/disturbing! 3w
BookwormM @sprainedbrain I was under the impression it didn‘t affect ratio as if you had never had the book I may be wrong 3w
RachelO @BookwormM @sprainedbrain @batsy I bailed. Thank you for the encouragement! It really wasn‘t for me. I did the ‘why you‘re not reviewing it‘ thing - my ratio beforehand was 70% (19 reviewed/27 approved) and it remained the same (19/27) after I‘d hit submit on it, as if I‘d just never got round to reviewing it. Now that I‘m close to the magic 80% mark, I think I‘d prefer to let those extra points go than wade through stuff I‘m finding 😣. Thx again 2w
BookwormM Well done I wish I could take my own advice I struggle through some utter 💩 just because it‘s on the 1001 list 🤣🤣 2w

Continuing Anton‘s upstairs/downstairs look at life in a Grand London hotel in the 1930s. The focus shifts to other characters this time, Nancy‘s anxious younger brother Frank has joined the hotel as a page, Maynard‘s secret is under threat, Helene considers a new romance & wealthy Vivienne may have found her purpose in life. It‘s firmly in the realm of historical fiction, rather than straight-up romance, with the politics of the time 👇

RachelO never distant from the main storylines. I didn‘t love it as much as the first book, but that may be because I read them in such quick succession. And he may have fallen into a couple of relationship tropes, which disappointed me a little. Overall though, an enjoyable read - look forward to the next one! I‘ve just finished Krys Lee‘s short stories of Korea (N&S) and Koreans living in the US. She writes beautifully and her characters are so well-formed, her families & relationships are so messed up & real - when they do something shocking (and they do) you empathise rather than judge.

Anyway, started it this afternoon and am really glad I got it. I think the first ‘grown up‘ books I ever read were Clare Francis‘s stories of sailing round the world, then solo round Britain. So the latest in a long-running theme!

#NewClassic #BBRC #readaroundtheworld #SouthAfrica

When toddler Dineo falls seriously ill, her older siblings set off on the long walk to find their mother, who‘s working in Johannesburg. This was written to help children understand what life under apartheid actually meant, and I‘m sorry to say I learnt so many things from it. I took particular note of the schoolchildren marching in the streets and striking from school as their learning only 👇

RachelO equipped them to become servants. Naidoo herself regrets that her own schooling as a white South African never encouraged her to think or question or even truly see the situation around her. (edited) 1mo
LibrarianRyan Wow. Sounds heavy. I‘ll have to look into it. 1mo
RachelO @LibrarianRyan It‘s definitely MG level - it packs a lot of information in but keeps things ultimately hopeful and not-too-grim. Written in 1985. 1mo
BookwormAHN Heavy but hopeful. I'll also look into it. 1mo

Started this one for #nfnov on an #audiorun yesterday.

Loung Ung starts her story as a precocious , curious, middle-class 5-year old in Phnom Penh. I‘ve realised already how shockingly little I know about Cambodia or the Killing Fields. #TIL that the Khmer Rouge overthrew the Cambodian government in 1975 - that feels so recent. Think this will be a tough read 😞

Libby1 Your photos are beautiful, @RachelO . 1mo
RachelO @Libby1 Thanks Libby 😊. I figure there‘s probably only so many times I can use an Overdrive screenshot 😬 1mo
Libby1 I don‘t even know what that means but it looks nice! 🤣 1mo

4thhouseontheleft I have a signed copy of this book! One of my first signed copies ever. I went to a conference where she was a speaker way back in the early 2000‘s. It‘s a great book. 1mo
iread2much The first time I learned about the killing fields was when I was teenager, through the Manga Sanctuary by Sho Fummimura. It was hard to read about in fiction, I can‘t even imagine for non-fiction. Good luck! 1mo
Blaire This has been on my tbr for years and years. 1mo
Clwojick 4pt 4w
Caterina Several of my friends were volunteers in Cambodia a couple years ago, it was so heartbreaking to learn about its history and especially the role that the US played in that history. 💔 4w
Caterina Also is this where you were running?? It's gorgeous! 😍 4w
RachelO @Caterina It is! When I mention running along the sea wall, this is it. Think I‘m going to have to follow your lead and find a treadmill for the winter though - it‘s not somewhere to run in weather, and we get a fair bit of weather here! 4w
RachelO @Caterina Oh my goodness! It‘s somewhere you hardly ever hear about- I think it will be heartbreaking 😞 4w
RachelO @Blaire I‘ll let you know how I get on! 4w
RachelO @iread2much Thanks - I hadn‘t heard of that. Sadly Manga isn‘t one if my library‘s great strengths, but I will look out for that one. 4w
RachelO @4thhouseontheleft Wow! That must have been quite something. 4w
iread2much @RachelO I hope you get a chance to read them, they are very graphic but really interesting 4w

Pickpick

Finished this wonderfully punny audiobook while stretching my legs the other evening. I‘m sure the print would have lots of extra something, with Riddell‘s drawings, but it stood up great as audio-only. It has cakes, vampires, painters, celebrity chefs and marmalade sandwiches - what more do you want really? Nigella Sugarspoon will forever be Nigella Sugarspoon in my mind now 🧁. Hope the library has the others! 🦇🎪🎂🎨🤺🌝🐻

4thhouseontheleft I don‘t think I could do a Chris Riddell illustrated book on audio, I love his illustrations to much! 1mo
julesG @4thhouseontheleft Same here! The illustrations for Goth Girl are great. I'm going to share some for you Rachel. 1mo
RachelO @julesG @4thhouseontheleft I bought a print copy for my brother last year - he‘s very big on puns and cooking programmes, but was ‘why have you got me a kids book‘? I was kind of reading it to check I was right & he‘d love it if he actually opened it (🙄). I‘ll be finding it on his bookshelf and reading the pictures shortly! 1mo

#bfcr4 week4 check-in: a good week!

64200/50000 steps👍 up goal to 55000
Cut out the afternoon biscuits - rice cakes=Progress!
2/2 workouts - up goal to 3/week
1 x swim & 1 x Parkrun over 6 weeks ➡️One day.
1 book 4/4 total - up goal to 6.

With winter weather kicking in, I‘m debating gym membership (urgh!) - I‘ve loved running outdoors this summer, but I‘m not up for wind, rain and slippy surfaces. Any advice?

OriginalCyn620 Beautiful! ❤️ 1mo
wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 Sometimes a gym membership is a necessary thing in the winter months. I‘m thinking about it simply because it gets dark so early. 1mo

#weeklyforecast

It‘s a 3-deadline week coming up, so the chances are I won‘t be reading too much 🥺. I‘d like to finish Moonlight over Mayfair in print, and this wonderfully silly audio - best appreciated if you have at least a passing knowledge of British TV cooking programmes 🎂 Anything extra will be a bonus!

Cinfhen Good luck with the deadlines 🍀💚 1mo

Oh no!

Cathythoughts Oh no!! You can‘t do this to us 😳....I want to know what‘s happening 😆( I better read the book ) not a fan of romance , but this sounds a bit different 1mo
julesG Suppose I'm going to read this. 1mo
RachelO @Cathythoughts 😂😂😂 Despite the cover, I wouldn‘t really describe these as romance. There *is* romance (and dancing and moonlight etc etc) but it‘s much more Upstairs/Downstairs-type light historical fiction. The author‘s one of the pro-dancers on Strictly, and the cover‘s much more what you would expect the book to be from him than what it actually is! 1mo

RachelO @julesG 😂😂 Sorry bout that! 1mo
julesG What's one more book on #MountTBR? It just means I have to find the Philosopher's Stone to make the Elixir of Life so I can read indefinitely. Or become a vampire. Or poltergeist, because they can move objects, so I could turn pages on books in ghost form. 😏 1mo

I had 3 books in my #weeklyforecast- only 1 of them‘s in my #bookreport photo 😬 I‘m reading too many things at once -again! In my defence, my long-train-journey-dedicated-reading-time was cancelled, so I‘ve stuck with hardbacks instead.

Anton: Not too sure about 1 of the new characters, but strangely learning stuff about pre-WWII politics 👍
Tom: Wasn‘t sure if I‘d get on with Tom in long-form, (cf Twitter) but wonderful comfort reading 👍

RachelO Krys (as I‘m obviously on first name terms with these guys): She knows how to make an impact 👍
Not doing so well on audio, largely because the weather‘s too 💦💨 for walking. Haven‘t actually finished anything this week.

#TIL #TodayILearned that I really need to explore Somerset. It‘s the next county along, and tends to be somewhere you need to get through to reach the rest of the country, not helped by the relatively rubbish public transport in these parts. But Tom‘s selling it - I love ‘cargo pants towns‘ like Shepton Mallet! It also has a haunted prison and lots of 👻.

*Mind. Blown*

So, bear with me - convoluted as ever. #cherish ➡️ Cherish the Ladies ➡️ folk tunes ➡️ folk tales ➡️ fairy tales and forests ➡️ to my bookshelf to see if there was anything cherish-like in here... and I didn‘t get any further than the pre-book quotes. Stunned (and not stunned) that such a dismissive-sounding term comes from such a special relationship!

Really must read this some time soon!

Wow. The title story packs a punch.

A young boy tries to escape the North Korean famine with his siblings, haunted by everything he‘s seen and done.

And the concept of a drifting house 😭.

I fell asleep to this last night (which is why it takes me so long to get through audiobooks!).

It begins, not with an actual #SwordFight , but with umbrella-fencing amongst the chimneypots of Ghastly-Gorm Hall, (which is kind of close??!) Didn‘t quite make is far as #EntryToTheGreatHall, but I‘m sure it‘s coming!

Do I need any Halloween reading? Categorically not.

So did I walk straight past the library this morning? Umm, no... It was raining. I was getting wet...

And did I escape unscathed?
Well of course. Apart from this. I mean, it matches my new bookmark from @TrishB EXACTLY, so obviously I was meant to bring it home...

Only 2 days late!!

This is my #weeklyforecast - I will review Anton‘s next book before #readersfirst start sending me grumpy emails or decide to blacklist me. Enjoying it so far 👍

And have a 4 hour round-trip by train on Saturday, so Pratchett on audio and Treasure Island!!! as light reading, both physically and mentally (it‘s exceedingly silly!)

Cinfhen Those ARCs are both delightful and torturous!! I try to keep up but sometimes I just fall far behind 🙄😬 1mo
