Doctor Sleep: A Novel | Stephen King
post image

Saw Doctor Sleep a second time earlier today. Stellar adaptation with a whole lot of heart; something, in my opinion, that was missing from the 1980 film which I've always thought of as a great movie but a bad adaptation. I read a tweet describing what Flanagan has accomplished as a feat of cinematic diplomacy, which is a neat way to put it. The way he strung together elements from both books, especially towards the end, while ⬇️

rohit-sawant doffing his hat to Kubrick's visual vocabulary is brilliant. Speaking of hats, still can't get over how terrific and terrifying Rebecca Ferguson was. I want to reread the book at some point just so I can picture her as the character. 1w
vivastory I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I agree about the movie, it's undoubtedly a great movie but having recently read the book I do feel like there are aspects that Kubrick missed out on. 1w
rohit-sawant @vivastory You are in for such a treat! Can't wait to hear what you think and talk spoilers. 😁 1w

rohit-sawant @LibrarianRyan Hope you enjoy it! 1w
vivastory I just returned from seeing this & I'm still trying to collect my thoughts. I read The Shining & Dr Sleep back to back around Halloween this year. I thought The Shining was one of the most terrifying books I've ever read. However, I felt like some of what King was attempting in Dr Sleep was better handled in the Bill Hodges trilogy. I didn't dislike it (I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads) but it's my least favorite SK I've read pub since '00. So, 👇 3d
vivastory the film adaptation. Mike Flanagan is without a doubt one of the greatest living SK adapters. No question about it. His ability to remain faithful to the source material (when it makes sense for the movie) is admirable. I really hate to say it, but Flanagan's ending of Dr Sleep is better than the book imo. It's strange that he rectified the liberty that Kubrick took with his adaptation by burning down the overlook & then took one of his own 3d
rohit-sawant @vivastory Just caught up on your review of Doctor Sleep! So well put, as always 🙌🏼 The parallel to Mr Mercedes never crossed my mind. That's a terrific point. I'd loved it at the time but I'm wondering how I'd feel post a reread now with the Bill Hodges Trilogy in the front of my mind. And cool that you read them back to back. I'd done likewise when DS had hit the shelves. Haha, so true about what you said regarding taking liberties. 1d
rohit-sawant @vivastory The film's ending definitely struck me as more punchy, visceral and clean. I love the way ghost Jack Torrance makes a brief appearance in the book towards the end and was hoping for something similar in the movie but I'm very happy with direction he went in, depicting him as the new Lloyd instead and having Danny share that moment with his mom in the boiler room. That, especially in the film's universe, made a lot more sense. 1d
rohit-sawant King ought to have Flanagan on retainer for all future adaptations 😄 MK is such a master at unfurling the heart of a story and balancing it with the creepy stuff. 1d
vivastory @rohit-sawant I know that King said that Flanagan would be adapting more work in the future. It seems like I read he might be doing the Salem's Lot adaptation (or maybe that's wishful thinking) 1d
rohit-sawant @vivastory Oh, that would be awesome! 1d

The Institute | Stephen King
post image

This quote sums everything about the book. Terrific, heart-wrenching story of children with psychic abilities taking a stand against the forces that kidnapped them. It's also more than that. One of my favorite Indian comics whose sets often focus on political commentary said how a politician he encountered told him to 'stick to comedy and leave the politics to us,' ⬇️

rohit-sawant and he retorted that he had but then *they* engaged in comedy (Sounds a lot funnier in Hindi 😄), and it's sort of similar in the present case, in that you have real life horrors competing with the fictional ones King crafted in The Institute during the writing of it and the resulting verisimilitude borders on a blood-boiling realism. 2w
rohit-sawant But amidst all the bleakness is warmth and friendship and courage. The bond between the kids was very much reminiscent of IT. The ending was sublime, emotional charged to a spark-spitting degree with that SK cocktail of terror, exhilaration, wonder and love, and some profound remarks, simply said. 2w
BarbaraBB Fab review. I‘m no fan of SK and promised myself no more SK after The Outsider but I must say I‘m tempted to read this one. 2w

rohit-sawant @BarbaraBB @batsy @CarolynM @readordierachel @Reggie Very kind of you all, thanks! 😊 💜 Hope you find this one engaging, Barbara, Carolyn! 🙌🏼 Reggie, can't wait to hear your thoughts on this. vivastory I haven't read a Nevill novel yet, but his piece is one of my favorites I've read so far in 1mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory I'm kinda drawing a blank on his piece in the antho but really dug his other short stories from his collection. Can't wait to hear your review of Seize the Night. I enjoyed pretty much every story within, especially the John Langan one. 1mo
vivastory The Langan story was phenomenal. Vampire as Lovecraftian cosmic horror?! Yes, please! 1mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory Right? 🙌🏼 Speaking of Lovecraftian cosmic horror and anthos, I have some publishing news I'll be sharing shortly! 😁 I should've posted about it yesterday but I was super weary after work and it slipped my mind. 1mo
vivastory That's very exciting news! Looking forward to your post! 1mo
batsy This movie is on my Netflix list! Just waiting for the right moment (i.e. daytime & courage) to watch it 😂 I should probably read the book first! 1mo
rohit-sawant @batsy The movie is so good! I like to describe it as Blair Witch on crack meets Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo." I went into it without knowing it was an adaptation and it's one of few cases where that enhanced my enjoyment of it. A collaborator of Guillermo del Toro has worked on the design and it shows. But it's more than just a scary film and the characters make it shine. Hope you check it out soon! 1mo
batsy You've definitely sold me on it! I just need to parcel out in small doses how much horror I can take 😂 because I'm in the midst of slowly making my way through the French series, Marianne. Have you seen that one? It's brilliant so far and very, very creepy—it's got a gloomy, oppressive atmosphere that really ramps up the terror. 1mo
rohit-sawant @batsy Whoa, that sounds pretty tense and well crafted. Will surely be checking it out. Just read the show's IMdB page and the fact that it has a writer as a central character only adds to my excitement. Dig that subgenre thanks to Stephen King (1408, The Dark Half, It, Bag if Bones) 😄 1mo

vivastory Glad to see you post! I saw the newest trailer for this yesterday while at the movies & I'm ridiculously excited. I'm also intrigued by the news that King asked them to add a scene... not sure what it was. The next few months will be an embarrassment of riches from the King family with IT part 2, new SK novel, new Joe Hill story collection & Dr Sleep adaptation. 3mo
CarolynM Hi Rohit👋 I've missed seeing you around lately. Hope all is going well for you. 3mo
Suet624 Been thinking of you!! Hope all is well. 2mo
vivastory Rohit! You're sorely missed, my friend! I hope all is well with you. Have you had a chance to catch the new IT? 2mo
Centique Hey Rohit. Expect you‘re super busy and I just hope it‘s all going well. Kia kaha e hoa from New Zealand 💕 2mo
rohit-sawant @CarolynM @Suet624 @vivastory @Centique So thoughtful of you all to drop a line! 💕 Missing you likewise! Sorry for the super late reply. This is probably the most hectic schedule I‘ve had in my adult life, but I‘m beginning to get a hang of it. 2mo
rohit-sawant And yes, Scott! How‘d you like it? I watched it recently. Loved it but not as much as the first one. Bill Hader stole the show for me. They did a terrific job overall translating the second half to film. I do have some minor gripes, mainly to do with the finale, but that‘s just me wishing for icing on my cake. The ending felt more like a Marvel film. It seemed like they held onto Bill Skarsgård‘s bankability to the last moment. 2mo
rohit-sawant I wish ? towards the end had had more in common with the alien from "Arrival" in terms of design as opposed to the humanoid spider. I was waiting for it to go ‘off planet‘ and had a mini laughing fit when my brain went ‘Muschietti you bastard, show me the goddamn turtle!‘ Also I didn‘t buy the eons-old, trans-dimensional serial killer falling prey to schoolyard bullying tactics which is what it felt like. 2mo
rohit-sawant I much prefer King's nuanced use of the power of belief, engendering that odd combination of elation & horror, much like the ending of Bradbury‘s Something Wicked. Man, Interstellar-esque visuals washing over you with Big Bill booming ‘He thrusts his fists against the posts‘ would‘ve been awesome, but I‘m still happy with what we got. On a side note, I‘m not religious but seeing that Stephen King cameo in IMAX was akin to a religious experience 😄 2mo
vivastory I actually liked chapter 2 more than the first one. Although it is mostly from the adults perspective I found the use of flashbacks made it much closer to the book, plus I found there to be a lot more genuinely creepy & bizarre scenes than the first one. I agree about the ending... although the ending of the book might be too epic & strange for a movie. I am super intrigued by the news that Muschietti is not only doing a cut editing the two 👇 2mo
vivastory versions together, but he's planning on filming additional scenes for it. I will watch the hell out of that! I completely agree about the King cameo. Speaking of Marvel, I feel like filmmakers messed up by not including cameos in King adaptations. 2mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory The flashbacks were weaved in brilliantly! It was definitely creepier and weirder than the first in a lot of ways, and I loved the new scene designs. I guess that's true about the ending being too epic and out there for a film... but the space turtle! 😆 🐢 Additional scenes plus a mash up of both versions? *Take my money meme*
And so true about the cameos! How awesome would that have been?
CarolynM I was just thinking of you yesterday 🙂 Good to know things are still good with you. Hope you get a bit more free time soon. 2mo

Thanks for the tag, @batsy! Haven't finished my current read yet but it's up there in my #top6reads. I've recently been attending a training program organised by a VFX studio where I'm due to start a new job in some months after clearing the assessment, & as exciting as it is, the travel has been hell, especially with the constant rain, so finding little time to Litsy. Hoping to be more frequent once I've settled into the routine.

rohit-sawant @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy Thanks for the kind words, both! 💕 Reading Sense and Sensibility prompted me to better plan my reading and not just mood read, since my default mood often gravitates towards the spooky 👻 and I miss a lot of terrific books outside the genre. 5mo
rohit-sawant @Cathythoughts Right? It's become one of my favorite anthologies of all time. 5mo

rohit-sawant @Centique Thank you, P! 💜 Just the rain subsiding would cut down some of the hecticness 🤞🏼 It's the studio that has worked on First Man, Nolan's Interstellar and a bunch of other great films so I'm really looking forward! 5mo

rohit-sawant @vivastory Thanks for checking in, Scott! This is probably the first stress-free weekend I've had. Sherlock Holmes: Adventures in the Realms of H.G. Wells Volume 2 | Derrick Belanger, C Edward Davis, Steve Poling
post image

A while ago, a story of mine appeared in the tagged anthology. For the past ten days I've been consumed with another Sherlock Holmes story for a submission call by the same publisher for a Holmes-Poe inspired anthology. Last night, I finally finished writing the first draft. I doubted I'd be able to since I thought it would be too hard, which it was at times. While it needs a LOT of tinkering, I'm not entirely displeased by the way its shaping up.

rohit-sawant As to whether or not it gets accepted for print is another matter, but I'm glad to have given it a shot.
Art via
vivastory I'm definitely intrigued! When I think of Holmes/Poe I think of Poe's Dupin stories, specifically Murders in the Rue Morgue. It always read to me like a fever dream Holmes story. 5mo

rohit-sawant @vivastory A fever dream Holmes story! So apt. I have the reasoning skills of Christie's Captain Hastings so a Holmes/Dupin mashup would've made my brain smoke from overheating 😄 The story I'm working on is inspired by Poe's William Wilson, one of my fav poetagonists 🙃 5mo

Not-so-short version: NOS4A2 delivers all the chills and thrills you‘d expect, but it‘s more than a mere thrill-fest. Yes, it‘s about a young woman facing off against a vampiric being she encountered as a kid, but it‘s also about parenting & motherhood, & real world horrors, about people grappling with their flaws, & loss & love. Especially love. ⬇️

rohit-sawant I found the commentary it made on innocence and morality to be profound. Everything from an otherworldly landscape to a bike skidding to a stop is exquisitely written, the weird elements creative and fresh. Ranging from intensely creepy & heart-breaking to cathartic & moving. An overall treat that had me putting off sleep & skipping meals. Vic fuckin‘ McQueen is easily one of my favorite characters of all time. 5mo

readordierachel Excellent review! So much fun this book. 5mo
Reggie My favorite part of this book is while the kid is trapped in the wraith he starts channeling all his relatives reminding him he‘s never really alone. 5mo
Reggie Nice review! 5mo
rohit-sawant @readordierachel Thanks! Absolutely. It has more than a single read in it. 5mo
rohit-sawant @Reggie Thanks! And yes! Lot a part that loved I. 😉 5mo
Suet624 You‘re the first person that has enticed me to read this book. I read one of his and was so-so about it so I‘ve avoided any others. Now I may try this one. 5mo
Suet624 @Reggie have you watched Sense 8? Your comment reminds me of how they all are there for each other. I liked that about the show. 5mo
rohit-sawant @Suet624 🙌🏼 Glad it piqued your interest! Hope you find this one more engaging. 5mo
rohit-sawant Also, that sounds great about Sense 8. It's been on my watchlist for a while now. Will get to it soon! 5mo
vivastory I want to like this review ten times! This is one of my favorite books of all time. I just finished the adaptation of Sharp Objects & will be starting NOS4A2 this week. Vic fuckin' McQueen, indeed! 🤘 5mo
Reggie @Suet624 I have not but I‘ll check it out. 5mo
rohit-sawant @vivastory So glad I finally read it! 🙌🏼 This was satisfying on so many levels. I'd love to reread it sometime in the future to appreciate it better. The story had me so hooked, it was like riding through a brilliant landscape and knowing there's much to pause and admire but you're also looking forward to the destination. I'm about three episodes into the adaptation and curious to hear your thoughts on it. Really loving the casting. 5mo
rohit-sawant Also how good was the Sharp Objects adaptation?! They captured the tone so well. 5mo
vivastory @rohit-sawant The Sharp Objects adaptation was pitch perfect. Amy Adams was stellar as always. It was a real delight to see Sophia Lillis as young Camille. Patricia Clarkson's performance as a venomous matriarch nearly rivals that of Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister. Plus, the ending made me laugh out loud with macabre shock & satisfaction. 5mo

The Silence | Tim Lebbon
post image

In The Silence, a family navigates a newly post-apocalyptic landscape, overrun by nightmarish winged creatures who hunt by sound; and terrified and terrifying people. Excellently paced, it takes you from the inciting event to the development of the crisis & societal devolution, in a way that‘s real-timey. What makes it pop from the dreck of disaster stories are the characters. The bond between Ally, a deaf teen, & her dad was the highlight for me.

rohit-sawant On a side note, comparisons to A Quiet Place are inevitable; however, the book was released prior to the film, and while they do share some creative DNA both are solid, unique stories in their own right. 5mo
UnidragonFrag I think they made this into a movie because I watched something that sounds awfully familiar. 5mo
batsy Was just gonna ask you if this was adapted into A Quiet Place 🙃 Great review! 5mo

UnidragonFrag I think that's where I saw it then. It was a few months ago. It was cool at parts, but the end was definitely cheese. Have you seen Sabrina on Netflix? It has the same girl playing the deaf girl in the movie. If you haven't seen Sabrina on Netflix, I highly suggest. 5mo
rohit-sawant @UnidragonFrag Loved both seasons of Sabrina! Excited to see her and Stanley Tucci play the roles of Ally and her dad. Will cross it off the list soon! 5mo

This is the story of Bryony Adams; she‘s wonderful, kind, and radiant, and burdened by the prophecy that she will one day be murdered. MMY crafts a unique tone, reminiscent of Bryan Fuller‘s Pushing Daisies, only darker, and it reads like a collaboration between Hans Christian Andersen and Thomas Harris. Peopled with engaging characters, suspenseful, moving, tender and grim, a terrific modern-day fairy tale, beautifully written. All the stars.

Reggie Sorry, I didn‘t want to post this where it would spoil anything for anybody but the 2 omg moments were when Archie gets the gun. 😱And then there was the paragraph that I liked a lot about being at Bryson Burgers and I thought as a writer you were just coloring in a bit of Archie‘s life with her friend wonderfully but it‘s a setup to make you feel horrible when you realize Mr. Monroe is the one who gets shot. Omg moment #2 😱. Also, that last👇🏼 1mo

There've been mixed reactions to the latest season of GoT, but I've liked pretty much every episode so far. Can't imagine the pressure the creative team must be under to wrap arcs and storylines in the reduced episode count. Uncle Stevie said it best.

rohit-sawant @vivastory Right? And agree about The Wire (I've yet to see Boardwalk Empire). I'm pretty satisfied with how it's turned out. Marc Bernardin rightly said that this is probably one of the last "water cooler shows" where audiences are on the same page, which grows rare with on-demand streaming, and the global experience it's created is a win in itself. Sure, it was bumpy at times but overall it was a great ride. 6mo

rohit-sawant @Bklover I had a hard time sleeping from the anticipation! 6mo
Bklover So what did you think? 6mo
rohit-sawant @Bklover I liked it. Then again, I'm easily pleased 😁 I can see how a majority of the audiences felt that a lot was wanting, but I think no matter how they ended it, pleasing everyone would've been impossible. I do wish we had more episodes to really flesh things out but considering the constraints, it was good. Chuck Wendig made some great points about why it didn't meet his expectations. You'll find it an interesting read, too @vivastory 6mo
Bklover I think I‘m disappointed because it‘s over. I wish there‘d been more time too. Looking forward to seeing what GRRM does in the books (whenever they come out!). 6mo
