No Longer Human | Osamu Dazai
post image
Pickpick

No Longer Human is a complex narrative built on the subtitles of human interaction. Dazai deconstructions the notions of society, love and crime to explore the variation of truth in a rapidly changing world.

This book made me absolutely disgusted with the main character, as Dazai horrifically captures his inevitable downfall; yet by the end, repulsion is fleeting and I‘m left to wonder how much I can ever truly know about another human being.

No Longer Human | Osamu Dazai

Now I have neither happiness nor unhappiness.

Everything passes.

That is the one and only thing that I have thought resembled a truth in the society of human beings where I have dwelled up to now as in a burning hell.

Everything passes.

No Longer Human | Osamu Dazai

The incomprehensibility of society is it incomprehensibility of the individual. The ocean is not society; it is individuals.

The Stranger | Albert Camus

So close to death, Maman must‘ve felt ready to live it all again. Nobody, nobody had the right to cry over her. And I felt ready to live it all again too. As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first time, in that night with stars and signs, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world.

Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don‘t know.

A chilling study of stream of consciousness. The Stranger examines the value of life when shaped by the ideals of society. It was a quick yet insightful read.

Super hilarious and entertaining, the Guide is a fast read full of adventure, sarcasm, and bittersweet romance. I enjoyed all the characters throughly, and Ms. Lee does a wonderful job of depicting LGBTQ+ struggles in the 18th Century.

An excellent addition to the series! I‘ve been reading since the first book cake out in 2016, and I‘m lucky to say Ms. Blake is not one to disappoint. Full of well developed female characters and riveting plot that will keep anyone entertained.

Brave New World | Aldous Huxley

Compelling and provocative, Aldous Huxley‘s Brave New World illustrates an almost satiric, yet prophetic society that makes one wonder about the worth of our intrinsic values. The morality of happiness is questioned, and we are only left to wonder about the “right” to be unhappy.

So bittersweet; you think you know where the story is headed, only for it to take you in a whole new direction. It‘s refreshing and heart wrenching and nostalgic all at once. Life is full of unexpecteds, so learn to live soon.

The Round House | Louise Erdrich
Pickpick

An engrossing coming of age novel that truly exemplifies the chilling change adulthood burdens one with. The narrative was beautiful and all the characters were strangely compelling. The author doesn‘t use quotation marks, which I found odd at first; yet the stylistic choice highlights perhaps the unreliability of first person narrative.

The ending sent shivers down my spine! It‘s a little quick and disorienting, but it finishes the story well.
