Catch-22
Catch-22: 50th Anniversary Edition | Joseph Heller
Fifty years after its original publication, Catch-22 remains a cornerstone of American lit-erature and one of the funniestand most celebratednovels of all time. In recent years it has been named to best novels lists by Time, Newsweek, the Modern Library, and the London Observer. Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier, Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemyit is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions hes assigned, hell be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule: a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved. Since its publication in 1961, no novel has matched Catch-22s intensity and brilliance in depicting the brutal insanity of war. This fiftieth-anniversary edition commemorates Joseph Hellers masterpiece with a new introduction by Christopher Buckley; personal essays on the genesis of the novel by the author; a wealth of critical responses and reviews by Norman Mailer, Alfred Kazin, Anthony Burgess, and others; rare papers and photos from Joseph Hellers personal archive; and a selection of advertisements from the original publishing campaign that helped turn Catch-22 into a cultural phenomenon. Here, at last, is the definitive edition of a classic of world literature.

Started reading Catch-22 today for my book club. Tbh I don't think it's working for me. Would dnf, but want to finish it so I can say more at book club. Maybe the whole satire thing is not for me, but I'm only on page 30 and am mightily bored. Anyone else felt this way?

Catch-22 was mostly hilarious- chock full of mad cap shenanigans, tom foolery, and absurdity- but became more tragic as I turned the the pages. The absurdity and heavy satire reminded me of Vonnegut's books. In its darker parts, it addresses issues typically found in military novels such as inhumanity, incompetent leadership, and brutal deaths. This was another classic I had on my bookshelf for a couple decades. It was worth the time investment.

BestDogDad
My only real complaint is the rather crude depiction of females in the book, most of which were nurses or prostitutes. This was probably a reflection of the time it was written - the 1950s.

Both dialogues and characters are brilliant, but the author succeeds in exasperating me and I found myself many times wishing to finish the book rather than enjoying it. I read reviews that the book is sexist, I don't agree. Most if not all the parts with a woman definitely aren't pleasant, but I think the author used them to shape certain characters (ie Aarfy) and how terrible is the war for women (Ch "the eternal city" as culmination)

I have heard this described as a classic and one of the greatest books ever written but I certainly did not form that opinion after finishing it. I wasn‘t aware prior to reading it that the book was satire and I think much of the humour was lost on me but I can see how it would appeal more to people who had lived through war. I think it‘s an acquired taste so I wouldn‘t recommend it.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I bailed on it but will probably try again sometime. Thanks for the review - I thought it was just me! 4mo

#you_must_read_this_Book_before_you_die. Catch-22 is a satirical war novel by American author Joseph Heller. First published in 1961. Often cited as one of the most significant novels of the 20th century, it uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, describing events from the points of view of different characters. The separate storylines are out of sequence so the timeline develops along with the plot.

Thanks Carolyn 💜 I may be ordering food hampers soon 👍🏻

MicheleinPhilly What is a food hamper? 4mo
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly basically a box of food! Carolyn is worried (as am I!) that a no deal Brexit means shortage of food supplies in U.K. as we would have no trade deals.....maybe. It‘s such a shi* storm none of us have a clue. 4mo
IamIamIam @TrishB Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need help!!! I don't know how long it will take for a box to get to you, but I'm happy to send along some non-perishables if it comes to that! 🤩🤗 4mo

MicheleinPhilly Jesus! Here I was hoping it was simply something cute and fun! 😔 And I will echo @IamIamIam for you and ALL UK Littens. We will never let you starve. 😘 4mo
IamIamIam @MicheleinPhilly I'm actually in New York. 🤗😘 The whole Brexit thing is scary and the fact that they haven't come to terms yet is insane but that's government, I suppose! I'm also on Long Island and we know what it's like being cut off and it's scary as hell! It was like a warzone around here when Hurricane Sandy hit! 4mo
MicheleinPhilly @IamIamIam I just meant that I‘d echo your offer of sending boxes of non-perishables. Need more coffee this morning. ☺️ 4mo

TrishB @Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly @IamIamIam it‘s scary!! No thought or planning and they‘ve had 3 years. Estimated all food prices will go up approx 22% and fresh food we import over the winter will become scarce. Lack of information is also scary. Lack of common sense in government is just terrible. Thank you all 😘 4mo
IamIamIam @MicheleinPhilly 🤣🤣🤣 You are correct... maybe some Irish coffee!!! 4mo
TrishB @Dragonfairykats I don‘t think the elite and rich ever worry about that unfortunately. Over the last few years we‘ve had a growth in food banks and now food will go up and everyday food will become too expensive. I do despair over the whole thing. 4mo
Cinfhen You know I‘m good for sending packages but I pray it doesn‘t come to that. It‘s too terrible a thought for the year 2020. 4mo
Hestapleton Yes, definitely down to send food packages to U.K. Littens! This is a scary world but no one should have to starve. 4mo

So I have to mark this as a pick because it really is brilliant. I still find myself thinking about it. But I also have mixed feelings. It was difficult to get through and started out seemingly quirky before getting progressively darker. About 3/4 of the way in the circular reasoning was grating but maybe that was the point! I‘m curious about the women in the story though and I‘d love to read something like a Wide Sargasso Sea for this novel.

Catch-22 is really funny… for the first couple hundred pages. Past that point, it starts to wear a bit thin. I know Heller was probably Making A Point with all the circular reasoning and repetition, but the point was well-made early on. The second half was mostly predictable (read: boring), and then it nosedived at the end into some really dark realities of war. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/catch-22-joseph-heller/

Scochrane26 This book would be better if it was about half as long. I didn‘t find it funny at first & only finished because it‘s a classic. I finally liked it more towards the last bit. 5mo

Catch-22 is the story of an American bombardier called Yossarian hell-bent for survival during World War II. The non-linear narration is confusing and repetitive. But its unconventional structure contributes to the madness of its characters and their times. Humorous, provocative and unexpectedly empathetic, it is a must-read for those looking for quirky books. Joseph Heller's Yossarian has centuries to live and express the importance of cowardice.

While I did find parts amusing, this book was a chore to finish. I listened to the #audiobook and often found my thoughts drifting. Going in, I knew pretty much nothing about the story other than it being set in WWII. I was surprised by all the talk of sex and the men's degrading attitudes towards women. I felt that women were viewed only as objects and treated as such. I also found myself very frustrated by all the circular conversations. 😖😖
